View Full Version : A word of warning (Beer52)

Just received an email from Hibs with an offer for a free crate of 8 beers with you only having to pay the postage from Beer52.

Of course reading the small print at the end you’re told that after your free crate you will automatically be signed up to their monthly subscription service (£27 a month!) unless you cancel beforehand.

Having seen reviews about them before it’s not as easy as it sounds to cancel the subscription, there’s no option online, you have to phone up Beer52 and speak to someone to cancel the subscription and it seems like you’ll be passed from pillar to post before they’ll finally cancel for you.

Overall, it’s maybe not a bad offer if you remember to phone up and cancel the subscription before you start getting charged £27 a month. But I’m sure some people won’t read the small print and end up getting signed up to a subscription they didn’t want.

Aye you have to phone to cancel, I signed up the last time this was on offer.

Was on the phone for about 20 minutes and the boy wouldn't take no for an answer.

Definitely not going through that again for some rank beer, most of mine were coffee flavoured 🤮

The old joke about the sign in a pub comes to mind - "Free Beer Tomorrow".

If you sign up online then you should be allowed to cancel online.

Never understood how companies are allowed to get away with this.

It's a loophole that should be closed.

Had Beer 52 subscriptions in the past and never had any issues cancelling. 5 mins tops on the phone.

Good beer and great Edinburgh company!

I tried it, wasn't overly impressed, and cancelled without any fuss.

Also signed up in past. Wasn’t the greatest selection of beers but was a good offer. Cancelled via email no problem.

For every half decent beer there were 3 or 4 crap ones when I signed up. Wasn't for me but the cancellation process was easy enough.

As others have said, the beer is mediocre. There’s a reason why it’s so cheap.

I gave it a go after getting the email from hibs earlier today. Now on hold to cancel, what an absolute con making people call do so. Will be telling them what I think of that when they answer.

DO NOT SIGN UP!

Honestly, I got an 'offer' from a mate who was using this subscription, the free beer was free, but F me, cancelling was a disaster, I ended up with 3 months of beers until I was able to cancel, you have to phone and they never answer, it's so so difficult and then they hassle you afterwards to return. The beer was honking. I ended up contacting my bank. Twice I drove into our street and saw the box on my doorstep and I was honestly punching my steering wheel.

I now buy my beer from M&S, just a random selection of cans, it's far better and cheaper, it also comes in the w4nky craft cans so I still get the absolute bell end experience.

I cancelled by email. No problem.

I emailed, but it bounced back, so called and got through straight away. Girl was happy to cancel, with only a few questions. That was a few months back, so maybe they're struggling after lockdown ended and folk going back to pubs. They do call me regularly, but I never answer my phone unless it's friends/family!

Subscribed a while ago and had the same nightmare experience cancelling.

Would advise anyone thinking about signing up not to do it.

Buyer beware.

Absolute racket around cancellations.

I was astounded to hear they are one of the worlds largest online beercompanies . When I subscribed good year or so BC (Before COVID) they would only cancel over phone and laid the so story on thick making out they were a small outfit starting out. It should be illegal to sell stuff online but not to cancel end of story. It should be your money your choice.

Signed up a couple of years back. There was a fair amount of persuasion applied to keep the subscription when I phoned up to cancel but that doesn’t work on a tight fist like myself so I humoured it any eventually got cancelled. Ended up giving the beer away before I could drink it so no idea if it was good or not.

If anyone phones to cancel and gets grief for it I’d suggest just saying you’re now a recovering alcoholic.

Beer was mostly crap. When I phoned to cancel the lassie was really persistent so I told her that I had a medical condition that meant I couldn't drink beer. Even then she wouldn't let it go but eventually she gave up. I'd avoid them.

I’m surprised at the amount of people saying it wa a difficult to cancel.

Think I’ve signed up on 3 seperate occasions to take advantage of offers and never had an issue, just called an Edinburgh number and they cancelled straight away.

Only issue was I kept forgetting to cancel but that’s not their fault.

Cancelled no problems but for the short while I was in, didn't think the beers were crap either.

It’s already been said, but yes, I signed up the last time and it was an absolute nightmare to get the subscription cancelled

More hassle than it was worth and the beers were pretty average too

Took me about 5 or 6 attempts to finally get through, on hold for 20/30 minutes at a time and getting get up and hanging up before I finally persevered and got someone on the line. Once I spoke to someone it was fairly easy but I still gave them a piece of my mind and also sent an email complaining.

The kind of nonsense that the club should be having nothing to do with.

How? The club can’t be held responsible for the customer service of companies who sponsor us.

They’re a legitimate company who have lots of happy customers. Myself and other people have had a positive experience with them.

And lots of people have predictably had bad experiences with them.

The email was direct from Hibs -

"You’ve earned some World Cup beers on us!"

Of course the club are responsible for who they form partnerships with, and agree to send this sort of material on behalf of.
