There’s lots I like about this current Hibs team. The first half last night was (despite the outcome) as dominant a display against Aberdeen at Pitoddrie that I can recall
The movement , passing, transition and work rate of this team area,e ball as good as we’ve seen in recent times. They push forward quickly when given the opportunity.
Yet, there are also some issues which are hurting us badly. We are letting in goals much easier than teams do to us….Newell’s recently uncovered long throw , results in all three centre backs moving forward. Twice last night we were almost undone, when the counter attack pressed against a very makeshift back line, which Aberdeen quickly bypassed .
The first goal seems an implausible decision , yet had Porto moved up in line with the rest of the defence , the Aberdeen player would have been offside. And for the second, how Newell manages to switch off at a corner to enable their main target man to get a free header six yards out is equally inexplicable. Was he the right person to have that marking role anyway ?
Porto also lets a tame ball across the box go passed him , leading to the fourth goal. He should have defended it, and taken the corner against. Poor judgement call.
Three recent games have shown the soft underbelly that LJ called out after the match. Celtic capitulation, scared rigid when we go down to 10 men against Saints, and our response in the second half last night. For all the stuff I love about this team, this lack of resilience ( or balls! ) when things go against us in a game, will undermine this seasons ambitions, unless it’s addressed quickly. We’ve gone from second best defence to one if the worst in about four weeks. Some of it is in our tactics - Why are we throwing all three centre backs up for a throw in ?
Teams now know we throw men forward. We leave ourselves vulnerable at times. Saints and Aberdeen have both successfully used that against us recently.
Overall , I still say there is a lot to admire about our play. And I can see progress under this management team. But there are obvious troubling weaknesses too. This Good and Bad side of Hibs is there for everyone to see. I hope we address it much better in the remainder of the season, starting in our next two games, or we will be well off a top four finish.
