What shocking scenes? Did I miss some images? Sounds like a bit of youths set stolen car on fire, run away from fire cops, rinse repeat. It was going on in Craigmillar last night as well, as it does most years.

Did you read the article? It's the main national news story in Scotland. Surprised you would shrug it off as just some everyday high jinks.

The legislation on fireworks didn't go anywhere near far enough. You've got crazed gangs of kids here chucking lit fireworks at anyone unlucky enough to be walking past.
That looked pretty serious last night. Firefighters and polis will be dreading this week.

‘Rampage’ suggested riot, lots of injuries etc. ‘Scenes’ suggest video footage. I see there’s a post of some fireworks being set off below. I’m not saying it’s everyday high jinks but this literally happens every year in certain parts of town. Personally I hate this time of year and I’d be banning firework sales but that’s because I’m a miserable old sod.

I’d ban them as well.
Dangerous, used as weapons, torture for animals, enormous carbon footprint.

I hate this time of year.
When I was a bairn there used to be a big bonfire in Oxgangs. It always started off well with loads of families about then as the night wore on you could feel the atmosphere change. By the end of the night the bams had taken over, rockets were getting fired at buses, cars getting bricked and the fire brigade getting attacked. Few radges 'having a laugh' spoiled it for everyone.
There's always bonfires and the like around where I stay now and the same thing happens. Always a minority who want to take it too far. There was a year fairly recently that saw the fire brigade criticised for refusing to attend a call because their engines had been seriously damaged earlier in the night. I didn't really blame them tbh.
The story posted above might not be all that rare but I still find it a bit shocking. There's no excuse for it. I grew up in an area of town that would hardly be described as affluent and I live in an area now regularly described as 'one of the cities most deprived' and I knew attacking cars, setting fire to stuff and tanning windows was wrong and my bairns know the same.

If a politician had the courage of their convictions to actually crack down on it you’d get a predictable series of attacks from the other side whether it be those pointing the ‘nanny state!’ finger or the libertarian left ‘police state’ finger. Actually it’s just the whole lot, Diwali, Guy Fawkes needs to be based on organised displays only and change the laws over a period of time so in 5/10 years possession of a firework becomes like possession of a firearm.

You can just hear the ***** now: “fireworks banned, should we ban cars as well now?”.

Pretty incredible when you think about it that anyone over the age of 18 can walk into most shops and buy fireworks. They are essentially exploding mini rockets.

I was just using the BBC headline as a thread title. The city council leader compares the scenes to something you'd see in a 'war-torn nation' so while that may be an exaggeration it's clear this was exceptionally unpleasant.
I'm with you on the fireworks ban but as Pretty Boy says there's really no excuse for this kind of c**p and a ban won't deter the deliberate fire-raising in order to attack the emergency services who attend.
I'd be sorry to see Halloween compromised though. My youngest had a fantastic night guising last night and there was a great community feel around our neighbourhood with hundreds of kids out.

The council leader is saying what he’s supposed to say to get votes from people that vote.
I just think in order to have a sensible discussion about the subject you have to question the legislative framework we’ve allowed to develop. Telling a lot of bored teenage boys in an environment where drink and drugs is prevalent that they can go and buy powerful explosives, tell them that’s it fun and acceptable to make them go off, and then act shocked when the streets get extremely dangerous is so insane it’s actually funny. I’m amazed it’s not worse. Can you imagine working as a fireman at this time of year.

Who's telling them, you've lost me? Not sure why the council leader is making a statement to get votes in an election in 5 years time either?
Fireworks are usually a problem where I stay. Last night there was a lot of guisers out, at the same time the off road bikers were back. It's quite scary the thought of one of them coming off their bike as they wheelie down a main street with loads of young kids out just trying to have some fun. They're a pain in the backside, wish the Police would get a grip of this, it's been going on for years and does my head in.

Excuse me but despite my high post count over the years I do occasionally have to do other stuff for an hour or two.
Since I was young in Scotland there is a culture of Nov 5th being an excuse for young people to get together and enjoy fireworks, which essentially is a controlled explosion. (Mixed in with a lot of healthy anti Catholicism and counter revolution) Culturally everyone is TOLD that it’s normal, that’s what I mean. When I was in the playground you were weird if you didn’t want to join in with building a guy or getting fireworks. And even if they aren’t quite as easy to see advertised as they used to be, it’s ubiquitous and it happens every single year. If you want to stop anti social behaviour and fireworks, ban them in non controlled environments . It’s not complicated.

Surely the images of the riot police with riot shields would suggest a riot?

Not really. I imagine in this case they were deployed to prepare for the worst. Whether you call that a riot or not is kind of irrelevant.

In fairness though, I'm pretty good at going up and down escalators these days.
That might not necessarily have been the case if I hadn't seen that safety advert so many times as a kid.

Wasn’t really a shock, has happened as a tribute to a local lad that died few years ago, only this time people working in the school and locals out with kids were caught up in it too. Community aren’t happy so could be more fun n games this weekend too if the kids kick off again.

You think that's his primary motivation for speaking out on this? To win votes? That's nonsense.
I think the war zone comments are stretching it (though if you're one of the families/old folk living in Kirkton simply trying to live a law-abiding life it must have been pretty damn scary), but it's incumbent upon somebody in his position to condemn such moronic, dangerous and anti-social behaviour in the strongest terms. Should he just have shrugged his shoulders and said: 'Ach, kids will be kids'?

The last one we attended there was about a decade ago, when the crowd were literally sent fleeing when fireworks started soaring off in all directions:

Where does chucking bricks at cars, setting fires, smashing school windows and attacking the emergency services fit into the 'culture' of November 5th? Nobody has ever been told that's normal. There was no justification for what happened.
This kind of behaviour is relatively recent in the sense that I'm old enough to remember when it wasn't such a depressingly predictable annual occurrence. Sure, there may be social/cultural issues behind that, but it's not so long ago that families could go to a local fireworks display, the kids could light a few sparklers and you didn't run the risk of getting caught up in bother. Sure, I agree with a ban on non-controlled environments, but it's not 'nanny-state' to question why the majority should see these nights soured by a minority of idiots.

Yeah, I remember those nights. Back in 1985 somebody thought it would be a good idea to launch a large propane/butane tank in to the ferociously burning "bonny". The fire brigade came but decided not to douse it as the thermal shock might have caused it to blow and basically propel the canister like a missile in to the air. An exclusive zone was set up and it basically fizzled out. Whether the tank was empty or the gas burnt off in a controlled way I'll never know.
Back then, it was tremendously exciting, these days, I shiver when I think of what might have happened!
