View Full Version : New Year Derby not on TV

Just read that the Derby on 2nd January hasn't been selected for TV by Sky.
Absolute farce that the second biggest game in the country is not broadcast.
Will be available on Hearts TV PPV so no doubt they'll make a few quid off it.

Disappointing / annoying
And that’s the second time they’ve done that recently
The 3-1 derby at the end of last season - maybe for the best it wasn’t

It’s a little strange, if they want to show Scottish football at it’s best. Stadium rammed full, total passion from both sets of players and fans and a better than average chance of a classic match. What are they showing instead?

Sky don't care about showing Scottish football at it's best. They care about viewing figures. They will show Celtic v Rangers on Jan 2nd and will want to keep one of their 5 available slots at Tynecastle for when Celtic or Rangers visit later in the season in case it's either tight or one of them can win the league that day.

Assume both on same day. Will they clash timewuse as police would assume prefer early kick.

Old firm on at 12:30 then English premier league fixtures on at 3pm on the same day. Was only ever going to be one choice unless they moved our game to the 3rd.
Arguably the SPFL should be spacing out their premium fixtures better to avoid this.

On the later part of Sportsound yesterday, they touched on the Deloitte report. I wasn't aware it had been published but I'm assuming they were referring to the thing that RG was involved with.
Anyways, the discussion was around the 6pm Saturday kick-off and the feeling was it was a positive move.
The report has recommended that more top flight games in Scotland are played when there aren't EPL games on.
Expect to see more Friday / Saturday evenings, maybe even Sunday's again.

Re PPV. Does anyone know if the home club retains all the money? I reckon Hibs are party to this and will get our own PPV games with them in due course

They have no interest in Scottish football, if Annan Athletic were in the Premiership Sky would show them at home to Celtic or Rangers over an Edinburgh Derby any day of the week.
They only care about two clubs.

Will it actually be on ppv? Thought that was gone now?

The clubs can have five home games as long as they aren't Saturday 3pm kick offs. Think that's the rule.

I don't think there's any guarantees that it will be but clubs can now show up to 5 home games on PPV as long as they're not being shown by Sky.

Laughable this game won’t be on sky. Won’t be giving hearts my money either so I’ll find a stream online

Sure that’s only on the new Sky deal we just signed but I don’t think that starts this season unless it changed, i think this season there is no ppv games, think the only way to watch it is via a dodgy stream or Hibs Tv via a change of Ip address to overseas

Dundee United just did PPV last night.
They charged £12.99 for it.

Any move away from the traditional Saturday 3pm Kick Offs in order to avoid EPL games just cheapens our game.
In Ireland they moved fixtures to a Friday night to try avoid other sports, and as a result it has slipped way down the priorities of most behind EPL (by some margin), rugby and GAA. The sport barely gets a mention in their press.
Showcase our games that suits best the majority of attending fans, not those watching on TV.

Not showing one of Scottish footballs showpiece games? Weird. In fact more than weird. Bizarre.

IPTV or use a VPN then Hibs international for a month. £17.99. All cash to Hibs rather than hearts!!

That’s the answer. However, considering the absolute pish that Sky put on with the constant showing of Celtic/Rangers playing away to utter cannon fodder every week, they can’t put on a real derby game? Scottish football is getting even more of a joke than it was because of these SKY muppets and the SPFL are allowing it. They absolutely CANT get their heads out the bigot brothers bums.

Proton VPN is pretty good and more importantly it’s free. Used it with a Hibs TV international subscription to watch the games when I lived down south.

A few hundred thousand would watch the Edinburgh derby, maybe more.
Tens of millions would watch the Rantic game, maybe more.
If there's a choice to be made, they'll always show Rantic.
For exactly the same reason that they'd choose Hibs v Hearts over Alloa v Falkirk. No point getting upset about it.

Of course that's correct, but the scheduling could be changed so that both the old firm and Edinburgh derby can be shown. It's not a choice of one or the other.
And I highly doubt tens of millions watch the old firm game. Will be nothing like that level of viewership.

Does that work?
Does Hibs TV international show all away games? I already have a VPN and a season ticket and would happily give Hibs £18 a month if it meant I can watch away games I can’t make.

Is there any clarification of the tens of millions would watch OF as personally think this so called global appeal is totally overblown?

Completely overblown. Think the highest viewing figures for an old firm game was something like 2 million a wee while back.

Probably 98% in uk and Ireland when no other game on.

I may be well out with my estimate but there's definitely interest in that fixture around the world.
I guess accurate figures would only be available from Sky.

What game did they show at Easter road on the screens fairly recently, was like fiver a head in the main stand.
And why not again,

And why not again,
Rangers at Ibrox last season when Porteous was red carded and our season then went into freefall!
Rangers shamefully refused to allocate us any tickets which resulted in the match being shown at Easter Road on the screens.

I think the latest barb figures, the most accurate viewing figures you'll get had an old firm game at around 500,000 in the UK.
The UK will make up the majority of viewership, so there's absolutely no way that tens of millions of people watch that game. Completely overhyped by the media in this country.

In which case, I stand corrected. I was miles off the mark.
The worrying thing is that if that game only attracts 0.5m, how few do games which don't involve Rantic achieve?

If the beamback for the Rangers game last season is anything to go by alcohol will be able to be sold before and after the game inside the hospitality suites but not during the game when you're out in the seated areas of the stadium watching the match on the screens.
