Seems a sorry way for his career to potentially be brought to an end. I used to read his stuff a lot and would hazard a guess this was a daft error of judgement rather than a deliberately racist comment.

Saying something racist because you are a dafty, rather than saying something racist as you are being deliberately racist, is still racist though.

It was a stupid comment, and he should leave his post.

No insult is too great for Kwarteng, Cleverly and Braverman. They'll be sentencing people to death this winter.

Indeed, cancel culture wins again. But only for some.

Nah racism against them would be vile. Although this isn't intentional in this instance, it is ******g stupid of him. Although he's a right wing hack so not that fussed

So he referred to them as a 'Coconut' cabinet, because they're brown on the outside but white on the inside.

I can honestly say I've never heard that as an expression before.

Now, if he'd just said that they're a bunch of privileged, evil *******s with no thought or feeling for anyone that isn't on the same class/social level as themselves and that some of them want to have rules that probably would have barred their own parents from entering the UK...

...then who could have argued with that?

Racism is just plain wrong. It doesn’t become right because you don’t like the victim.

The coconut/bounty slur was used by blacks against black officers in London back in the 90s

I'm not defending it. It was a really stupid comment for someone of his experience to make but I'm sure he knows that - and likely knew so almost as soon as he'd made it. There's no escape on Twitter though.

I lived outside the UK for a long time, so I'm not really up to date with all the current expressions.

I could tell you a few German expressions that would knock your socks off, though ;-)

Certainly been a term of abuse for quite some time, usually from the Left towards black people who are accused of 'betraying their race' if they don't hold rigidly Labour values. The assumption being that black people must automatically have more in common with each other than white people do. Plain daft really. Plenty of black politicians regard themselves as natural Conservatives, while at the more extreme end of the scale some of history's most despicable dictators were black.

I can't remember the full details - but I'm sure Rio Ferdinand called Ashley Cole a choc-ice for the same reasoning.

Okeydokey

Schattenparker (lit: shadow parker) --- You're basically calling somebody, well, unmanly, a bit of a wimp.

Weichei (lit: soft egg) --- Similar meaning to the above

Backpfeifengesicht ---Used to describe somebody annoying, in need of a slap.

“Du gehst mir auf den Keks” (lit: You're walking on my cookie) --- A much more descriptive phrase to say to somebody that's really annoying you...

... My wife says the last one to me fairly regularly :greengrin
