With the biggest union on board does this mean Edinburgh schools are likely to be involved? Don't think it was going to affect them last time round when the planned strike was called off.

Yeah if strike goes ahead it will affect every school though dates may differ across the country. Imagine it will be November at the earliest

Civil Service ballot is 6 weeks, then decide on action and then 2 weeks notice. Fingers crossed the Teachers get a result with teh threat of strike and they will have my full support if they have to take action

University and College Union are currently balloting members too - looks like it'll be across the entire education sector.
The offers of a pay increase that teachers got was actually better than what they offered HE/FE staff - we were offered 3%. At a time when they've just decimated our pensions.
I feel for the students - first time back to being taught in person, but there's only so many liberties an institution can take from its staff before they lash out.

Only strike I ever supported was the fireman , they were on crap money and deserved better . But ….
Train drivers on 50 odd grand a year , teachers on 40 odd grand a year **** right off . We’re about to be hit with a global recession in the middle of a devastating war and ***** on 50 grand a year greeting because they only got offered a 3% pay rise . There’s folk out there that get offered nothing , haven’t had a pay rise in years and just get on with it .

Tories trying to crush unions, and them (alongside the BoE) saying that restraint needs shown in pay rises.
Also the Tories - lets lift the cap on the money bankers can earn....it's utterly ludicrous, especially given the banks crashed the global economy in 2008 and we've all paid for it through years of failed austerity policy.

People happy to do nothing and just get on with it are not the cause of Tory exploitation, but they do facilitate it.

I got told to **** right off by some on here when I expressed similar sentiments about how much of a pay rise strikers could reasonably expect in the current climate ;-)
I do have a fair amount of sympathy for teaching staff. Much harder job than many realise, not so much in terms of the actual teaching but the management of disruption. Teaching assistants are also very much in the firing line here and get paid a pittance despite a good number dealing regularly with appalling levels of physical and verbal aggression from kids whose presence in mainstream schools is questionable.

Police?
Police numbers in free fall under the Tories, pay way below inflation, increased workload. If you want to do all these things they say they do like crack down on crime, crack down on immigration, you have to fund public servants to man police and Border force, for example, they are doing the exact opposite.

It's not about wanting more, it's about wanting the terms they signed up to as a minimum.
40k a year might seem a lot, but if inflation is 2% and you get 1% a year, then each year its a 1% decrease... now try that from 2010 for 12 years.
It's not just teachers or firemen... it's everyone in the public sector. The public sector that worked during covid with little to no consideration to their own welfare from anyone and absolutely zero thanks. Unless of course you're in the NHS and you can spend your claps...
With an attitude like yours... you deserve the tories.

Maybe they should consider joining a Union if they are being treated so poorly rather than having a go at workers trying to make their lot better. It also isn't a 3% pay rise being offered, it is a 7% pay cut

I don't think it is. If you are paid £100 a year, or to put it another way have £100 spennding capacity a year and the cost of living is £100 a year and you receive 3% increase, set against no rise in prices then your 3% a year gives you genuine increased capacity of 3%- all other things being stable.
It you receive no pay increase but the cost of living rises by 10% - with all other things stable - then your spending capacity has not diminshed by 10%, it has has reduced by c.9%
If you receive a 3% increase set against a 10% increase in the cost of living - all other things being stable - then your spending capacity has reduced by c.6.3636%.
That's what a real terms cut would look like in theory - if things were stable. But of course they are not. Inflationary pressure isn't uniform, so some things will increase in cost at a higher rate than others (plus we don't buy the same quantities of everything). Also, these figres are affected by toher levers - changes in taxation levels, changes in thresholds within taxation levels, one-off or ongoing subsideis and payments to individuals or groups. Changes around access to credit and the cost of credit also impacts. Clearly all these influences can be positive, negative or a muxture of both.

Until 2019, teachers had paltry pay rises due to austerity. A fair whack of teachers aren’t on 40 odd grand a year, far from it as it’s a pay scale. Once you reach the top of that scale, unless you go for a promoted role, your pay stays the same for the rest of your career. Other professionals get paid a lot more than teachers. It’s about being paid for what you’re worth. And if one sectors pay rises, it’ll help other sectors pay to rise.
There’s enough money out there for the rich to get richer. This shouldn’t be about a race to the bottom. It should be about making things better for everyone. Have a look at the Enough is Enough campaign, which brings together lots of different sectors, including those out with the public sector, to improve pay and conditions.

What about bankers being paid hundreds of thousands or big businesses dodging taxes. Yet you only attack workers. Workers getting a decent salary should be the norm. If you’ve not had a pay rise in years join a union, get organised and fight back. It’s not a race to the bottom. A more fair and equitable society benefits the whole country. But you typically fall for the rhetoric spouted by the right wing press that inflation is caused by workers getting a pay rise. Inflation has been caused but not exclusively by brexit, war, big business excessive profit, over payment in dividend payments and a unfair tax system.

If the Truss and her band of public schoolboys and girls cut national insurance by 1.25% then the Scottish government should raise income tax for high earners by 1% and introduced a more progressive tax system for whose on salaries above £100k. Not one person would be worse off in their joint income tax and NI contributions as things stand just now.
At a time of need those of us on the highest salaries can contribute a little more. Increasing tax is never popular but increasing income tax on those on over £100k a year, then a little more for every £50k above will provide more money for the Scottish government to spend.
It’s about political choices, we need to invest in public services and those who deliver them or see the continued decline in them and continued worker unrest.

Or Westminster could loosen the purse strings and the Scottish Government could follow suit with the increase in Barnett pocket money.

I agree to a certain extent, but not all unions are especially effective. Been a member of two in the past who were next to useless when it came to redundancy processes.
And they don't always fight the good fight. I had a relative who worked in journalism back in the old days of Fleet Street in the 1970s who was appalled by the print workers unions. The print runs were regular sabotaged (eg by sticking a piece of chewing gum in the presses) in order to demand more pay. This was particularly disgraceful when the Sunday Times broke the front page story of the thalidomide scandal and were unable to get more than a fraction of the papers out that day due to yet another grievance from the printers (many of whom were on bigger salaries than the papers editors, such was the power they wielded). Murdoch's supposedly scandalous move of his titles to Wapping was something the unions brought upon themselves.

The thread isn’t about bankers , feel free to start 1 and I’ll rant about them too . Pay rises didn’t cause inflation but you can be sure if the whole country takes a 10% pay rise everything will go up in price , then everyone will need to strike again for another pay rise .
I don’t need a pay rise , I can get by on what I earn which is probably about the same as teachers make . If someone offers me a rise I take it but I’m not gonna demand 1 and go on strike about it if I don’t get it .

So why complain about others valuing their labour more than you? If your happy with your lot then so be it but the democratic votes of members of rail, education and public sector unions tell us that these worker aren’t happy with their lot and a re willing to strike to achieve a better deal.

Someone else mentioned it above but they went 12 or 13 years with either no or a 1 percent rise
I'm sure if they didn't have the piss taken out of them for over a decade we wouldn't be where we are
"In the online ballot, which closed at noon today, 94% of members voted to reject the pay offer and 91% indicated their willingness to take strike action over pay. Turnout in the ballot was very high, at 78% - well above the thresholds set by the UK government’s anti-trade union legislation."

Sounds to me like you never got a pay increase and you are bitter. Workers are entitled to a raise every year as the capitalist system means money is worth less and less every year. Corporations are making billions and the workers at the bottom are barely scraping by, its disgusting.
To add to that you clearly haven't read the actual facts regarding the strikes. You said train drivers are on 50k? What about all the other rail workers? Its not just the drivers who are on strike.

Not bitter at all , everyone on the railways are on decent wages , that’s why you now need to take out a bank loan to buy a train ticket these days . I just think that folk who are already well payed and we’re offered a reasonable rise going on strike because they want even more isn’t going to help .

So what you're saying is people should take a wage decrease? Because if they don't get an increase in line with inflation they are getting a decrease. Is their labour worth less than it was last year?
Train tickets are so expensive because the train companies are determined to make as much profit as physically possible without caring about how people will actually afford it

I used to be very suspicious of unions but to be honest, the way this country is being run, they absolutely have my support. The Tories are shovelling as much cash as they can to their friends and families and if people don’t start demanding better for themselves they will get nowt.

If your not bitter your coming across that that way. But on rail workers, all the ones on strike haven’t had a pay rise in 3 years! But the owning companies still received dividends and the rolling stock companies make millions in profit every year. Rail staff wages are a small % of the railway costs. But it’s the workers your having ago at not the bosses.

When did teachers last actually strike? I was at school in the 80s when the big one took place. Had a devastating impact, most especially on extra curricular activities/sport and it's fair to say a good number of kids will have missed out on their vocation/passion because of it.
I think there's more pressure on professions like teaching NOT to strike but as I mentioned earlier it's an increasingly pressurised role for many.
