Anyone have any experience with/ understanding of mesh routers?

I’ve had an Orbi RBK50 for a couple of years and it’s been great but after a power outage, the main unit is bricked. Power light’s fine but no lights even when I unplug from the modem. Seems to be a common issue and I’ve tried resetting but still doesn’t come to life.

Is it dead? Half considering switching to a Nest mesh as it’s a damn site cheaper and they at least have some tech support! It’ll be a big waste of money on the Orbi if I have to do that, though.

Any experts on here?

Got Tenda Nova MW5 which works well for me. Had it for several years so it's Wifi 5. Would imagine you'd be after something that's Wifi 6 though.

Was looking at these too - I’d ideally like to have three satellites around the house and to also give a good signal in the garden, so could the current router be left where it is and the other three distributed around the house?

Generally your current router stays in place in modem mode and will have the new one plugged into it, the other units would be spread around the house.

Unless you have a massive house you won’t need three around the house, I have the TP-link Deco M9 with the main unit plus one upstairs, that’s enough to cover the whole house and the garden / garage.

The Orbi’s pretty much humped. Minimal tech support from Netgear but plenty of threads in the forums from people with the same problem as me. I paid about £250 for it at the time but it doesn’t persuade me to spend any more on an Orbi system (up to a grand if you want).

I’m looking at switching to the Nest mesh or more likely eero pro 6 which looks flexible and easy to upgrade incrementally.

I need the mesh as Virgin’s router is so ****.

I’ve got a Deco M4 and 3 S4 satellites. Why I have the 3 satellites is to allow me to use Ethernet in certain rooms in the house (well and they came in a multipack)

We're on Virgin and , like you, had poor wifi which wouldnt reach all the rooms in the house.

We phoned them and they sent out "Intelligent wifi pods" - its there own wifi Mesh system. Works perfectly now in all rooms.

They sent 2 free of charge, and said if we needed another one they'd charge for it.

Worth trying

I have them too, i have 5 altogether, i have a huge area to cover. They do the job very well, i've not bothered using an ethernet cable as the wifi if very good, i'm only on BT fibre 2 the 70mg one, and it gets everywhere i need.:top marks

I've had the Google Nest Wi-Fi mesh system for over a year now and it's never skipped a beat
One router and one "point" but it's expandable if necessary.
Much better coverage than my last router and coverage in the house is excellent (1950's semi so reasonably sized brick walls) including the garden.
There's also a small bonus in that the "point" is also a Google speaker if that's what you're in to.

Ended up getting an Eero, the Amazon one. It was between that and the Nest but the latter is due an upgrade and I needed something straight away.

Great connection and speed. Hopefully won’t die like the Orbi and all the units can work on their own in the system if one does break.

Let’s see.
