View Full Version : Scotland v Belarus 1997

What with the news the Queen is dead/dying, it reminded me of that time in 1997 that some folk tried to postpone Scottish football matches because of the passing of Diana.

Ironically it was the Queen who told Sfa beak Jim Farry to play the game, which was on the same day as the funeral.

https://www.scotsman.com/sport/football/queen-told-us-play-game-reveals-farry-2476128

I would hope politics is kept out of football when the Queen shuffles off the mortal coil, and that games go ahead.

I'm posting this as I'd be interested to know if anyone disagreed (and if so, why?)

Game was ridiculously moved to the following day to avoid "clash" with funeral after certain players said they wouldn't play.

Inevitable games will be off for her funeral when the time comes. Like her or not shes been monarch for 70 years.

There will be at least a day of National mourning where all sporting events will be cancelled and I’ll leave it at that.

Shame we've just had the old firm game

Still a minutes silence at Celtic Park would be anything but

Where's the bad taste?

There is none. When I heard the news the first thing I thought was I hope the game goes ahead on Saturday. I'm sure I'm not alone!

Where's the bad taste?

Are you completely lacking in any form of emotional intelligence? Are you really devoid of any empathy or understanding. The woman is seriously ill, she is also the country's head of state, a 96 years old mother, grandmother, great grandmother, a beloved national icon,a person who served during the war, a person clearly deserving of respect and dignity.

I put it to a you in a way you may, just may understand, we applaud supporter during games, we don't talk about the time before they have died. We talk about after they have passed away. That is the difference between good taste and bad taste.

Seeing your age, you may not have long to go yourself. Don't expect a round of applause or games cancelled for you.

Hate to break it to you but there will have been lots of people in lots of different organisations talking about what they plan to do in the event of the Queen’s passing long before today. If it’s any consolation, I very much doubt the Queen or her family will be browsing Hibs.net so unlikely to come across any of the posts on this thread.

It is no shock to me that people will be making alternative plans but regardless of that, I think some of the comments are crass and poor, clearly being a Hibs fan does not bless you with empathy or understanding. As for the Queen and her family, they will not be looking at Hibs net, that is for sure but nevertheless we should be sympathetic to any person seriously ill. As I said, talking about this is bad taste, I leave you with this, when Andy Goram made his Cancer announcement, we didn't start talking about his funeral.

The only person being crass is you, comparing this to Andy Goram is also ridiculous.

The queen is clearly dead or dying, everyone in the news is wearing black, the family is flying to her, and she will not be moved to a hospital. It's understandable that people will want to discuss that.

I don't think any comments have been crass to be honest. People are mentioning her funeral because the country will probably grind to a hault for a couple of days because of it and it will be on a weekend when the football will be posponed. It's a valid thread imo. She's clearly different to Andy Goram. It was mentioned at length when Prince Philip was ill as well.

Folk are only discussing this here because of Hibs.

So it absolutely stands to reason that whether Hibs are playing on Saturday is more than an afterthought?

Oh go f*** yourself, everyone dies it's normal, it will be you and me one day and our loved ones one day (as it has been in the past), and nobody will be demanding anything from strangers as a result.

I don't know if you've ever been married, I assume you have or had a mother but would you not be expecting a wee bit dignity for them when they are seriously ill. Never apply for a job in a hospital.

The whole country won't come to a standstill when she dies so why shouldn't football carry on. Won't hold my breath though.

Marcus Aurelius you clearly ain't. The difference between a public institution, The Crown and the person who is The Queen is clear, the point when someone passes away, we do after.

Your idea of dignity & decency (and I suspect pretty much everything else) is clearly very different from mine.

Lol

Sorry but I have no respect for elites who gained their wealth through colonial exploitation and leeching of taxpayers. Doesn't help when they lobby governments to protect their personal wealth while using said wealth to protect sex offenders

Any minutes silence at ER would be ‘interesting’. As an ardent Republican, I’d hang about the concourse with friends and family of a similar political hue until it was finished. She’s had a decent kick of the ba’ and wanted for nothing all her life. I, like millions of her ‘subjects’, am more interested if I’ll get a day off for the funeral or not.

I grew up booing ‘GSTQ’ at Scotland games along with literally most of the crowd, and it still got roundly booed recently. Then you have the whole Rangers-Celtic axis. So its fair to say Scotland football fans will have a conflicted and mixed view of how to respond to this news.

Interesting to read the thread.

The original point was that the Queen herself was all for saying "keep playing football" on the day of Diana's funeral

Then again she had blood on her paws

Wow, there really are some wallopers on this site, get a life.

There are indeed some.

I have a nice life thanks.

I care a little bit more about those- and there are many around the world- who have had theirs taken away.youll never find me apologising for that.

Virginia Giuffre, paid £12-£13m of hush money using public funds earlier *this* year, having been tricked, trafficked and held captive?

That's not small potatos. It's amoral in every detail.

So, yeah, wallopers.....
