haha. Very good.

on the actual subject of the best anthem, of course it’s in the eye of the beholder and all that.

I do however think ours is one of the most unique. While YNWA is undoubtedly a classic, and is in most peoples eyes the rightful property of Liverpool FC, they have to share it with at least two other major European clubs and probably a number of smaller ones. If you go back 40 years everyone was singing it.

the fact that ours references our home means it’s pretty much safe from plagiarism. I also love the fact that, like the finest family silver, SoL only gets brought out on very special occasions. In comparison I think YNWA suffers a wee bit from overuse. Of course it can still be incredibly powerful on the biggest European nights but before playing Norwich on a Saturday afternoon it’s a bit meh. I also remember a LC semifinal when Celtic beat us 4-2, I think Lennon was in charge, and it was the most half arsed rendition of YNWA I’ve ever heard.

just my opinion of course. But Sunshine on Leith wins.

Agree, GGTTH is not a bad Anthem as well.

Brings back some memories of a very good weekend with that lass in the deely bobbers headgear. It has been a very long time since a SOL and as an earlier poster said that is one of the reasons it is so special. It always has a great memory attached to it whereas YNWA could be sung before getting pumped in a cup final or derby.

One thing I find funny is how some Celtic supporters claim they were the first team to sing YNWA 🤔🤦

Not sure when Dortmund started singing it, but Mönchengladbach started doing it after facing Liverpool in 2 finals in the 70s

Speaking of football songs, here’s a belter for McKirdy…

I am in love, you know it’s true,
We signed a striker and he’s number 22,
From Swindon Town, who could that be?
His first name's Harry,
And his second's McKirdy,
Ohh, ohh, ohh...

It's always going to be Sunshine on Leith as tops for me but Benfica deserves an honourable mention.

Before every home game they sing a song that was written and released by a fan in 1953, to raise money to build their stadium, the original Estadio da Luz (or Stadium of Light).

The song itself is a bit maudlin and twee, very Portuguese in sound and isn't worlds apart from our song really.

Seems to me that in order to rise above the average the last thing an 'anthem' should do is mention the club that have adopted it. YNWA and SOL share that distinction ..... SOL just edges it because unlike YNWA nobody else can use it .... just as well coz Celtic would be claiming it :greengrin

The other thing about SOL is that it doesn't do very well if you try to sing it without the music, that has probably turned out to be a good thing for us because it's enabled it to keep it's impact ..... it's not the first time I've had to explain to someone planning a casual visit to ER that it doesn't mean they are going to hear the crowd sing it.

:agree:

I remember bringing a couple of mates (not really football fans but they know all about Hibs and Sunshine on Leith from YouTube) to an away game in Dundee. They were gutted when I told them they weren’t going to hear it.

Surely the correct response in these situations is "you start, everyone will join in"?

Brilliant video from Hibs.
Changing the topic slightly, but I don't think teams should have the same anthem.
