View Full Version : Most Drunk You’ve Ever Been at a Hibs Game?

Just a bit of fun - not condoning excessive public drunkenness.

The eighties and peer pressure meant a lot of alcohol was consumed but generally after the game and later in the evening. I’ve had the odd time when I turned up the worst for wear - usually after some sort of celebration.

The daddy of them all was May 2016 when I was practically sloshed right through the summer.

The old 6.05 kicks off on a Sunday night, Hibs were playing Dundee and we were booked into the Tangerine Club and got there at 12

They didn't have Sky so we had to watch C4 racing for about 6 hours, I ended up absolutely wasted as there was nothing else to do

At one point during the game I stood up to go mental at a Hugh Dallas decision, it was only a throw in but I felt really passionate about it

I fell two rows forward and was lying on the ground when one of my pals picked me up and told me to sit down and stay quiet as the stewards were on their way to chuck me out

I also walked into a lamp post outside the Nip after the AEK game which was witnessed by a couple of hundred folk, my heid made an amazing boing noise on it

The Cup final day was even more eventful, I lost 2 or 3 jackets, we almost killed my pals dad and I was walking about shooting people with bottles of champagne

Had a few occasions e.g. night games or games on a birthday when I've slept through some of the match, due to being wasted. A few away treks at places like Aberdeen and Inverness that have been very messy. The joys of being young.

I fell asleep during the home leg against Asteras a few years back and missed both their 1st half goals. :greengrin

Scottish Cup away day to Cowdenbeath in 1993. Was 17 and didn't expect to get served in the pub or off licence but we did without any fake id being produced.

Didn't remember the score on leaving and only later found out it was 0-0 despite having watched it. Somehow thought we'd lost. Probably for the best as it sounded terrible. We won the replay 1-0.

I remember being on the tequila slammers before a derby sometime in the mid to late 80s and being that drunk that I walked through a pitched battle going on outside the Royal Nip to speak to a work colleague who was sheltering from the carnage in a shop doorway across the street

The 1-0 League Cup QF derby win in 06/07, where I ended up a few rows in front when we scored, or the 2001 SC semi vs Livingston. Was drinking from 8am and on the aftershocks. Didn't know what was happening in the game and only celebrated after everyone else jumped up. Slept on the bus back and then went up town!

Not drunk, but there was a 3-3 game against St Johnstone around 2000 where I was quite mellow, and I couldn't move my head quickly enough to follow the play. Didn't do that again.

I wish I’d seen you after the cup final.

My drunkest was a 2-2 draw with the Hun in 1999 or 2000, we’d been on the whisky, Kenny Miller scored but it’s all a bit of a haze and I do remember throwing something (a pie? but could easily have been my hip flask because it never came back) at the hun end, which isn’t like me at all.

Another time before my mates stag do I shared a joint on the way to the game and I was in a fantastic mood throughout, the grass on the pitch was very very green, I remember staring at it for ages, and at one point Latapy waltzed through the entire Dundee defence like George Weah, it was only in the pub after someone told me it was Agathe.

Rarely been deliberately drunk at a game.

However, I remember an early Sunday match at Easter Rd v Celtc where half the east stand looked like they hadn’t been to bed Saturday night at all… just like me.

The atmosphere was great, wry amusement and gallows humour rather than the usual raging.

2001 cup final, I lived in Glasgow at the time and we had a party the night before, I was up till 6am. Woke up at 10 realising i was supposed to be at Central station to meet my brother. Staggered into town, got back to the flat and he drove us to the game as I was nowhere near a fit state. It’s the least I can remember about a cup final.

As a 16/17 year old I once got absolutely smashed before a midweek game against st Mirren. Me and two older cousins had been drinking from about 2 o clock that afternoon after I bunked off school. We walked from brunstfield to ER. One of the cousins was sick at his seat and spent half time and most of the second half in the toilet.

David Witherspoon scored the winner I think.

February 1987 came back from University in England to watch the Hibs and celebrate my 19th birthday with mates. we were playing Dundee and we hit the pub early, lots of drinking game shenanigans and id had a skinful by kick off. I can remember being near the corner flag in the East and threatening to throw a pie at the linesman and then feining to throw it when he looked round, only for the pie to crumple into a greasy mess in my hand and land on my own head, to everyone's huge hilarity.

Hibs were making hard work of it but I think Collins scored then Super Joe and we won 2-1. Straight back into the pub for 3 more pints og guinness then I bought chips after and ate them too quick and ended up sat in easter road throwing them up into an up-turned traffic cone...Happy days:greengrin

Scottish Cup semi-final v Dundee Utd under Mowbray.

Left Kirkliston early doors on a bus booked with mates. Been drinking since circa 8am and copious amounts of booze downed on the bus too.

Had to stop the bus on the M8 near Harthill for a piss, where I subsequently fell down an embankment whilst trying to hold my you know what.

Don't remember much of the game as spent most of it trying to stay awake. Drinking continued apace on the way home.

Utterly smashed.

Odense, summer 2006, I was out on the sauce from about 10am having journeyed in from the Borders. Was with a pal who'd never been to a game before, suffice to say he never returned.

Remember nothing of the game really apart from constantly pishing and falling down East Stand steps. My excuse was I was 20 and let loose from the countryside haha!

Recently though, Livi away in August, spewed after the game and ruined my Air Max 90s.

Not so much how drunk I've ever been at a Hibs game but the drunkest I've ever been at Easter Road...

I'd been at a birthday party at a function suite down opposite Leith Police station. I lived in Dundee at the time and had planned to stay at my mates' flat up in Bruntsfield.

Anyway, absolutely smashed at the party, separated from my mates and decided to make my own way back to their flat.

Next day we're recounted the events of the previous evening and one of them said "hey, you said you broke into Easter Road on your way back" and it all came flooding back to me as I'd forgotten.

I'm pretty glad no footage of the whole escapade existed because much as I'd like to think it was pretty cool, it was mainly excruciatingly embarrassing running about on the pitch like a total fanny, mock celebrations and the like. Pretty tragic, considering I reckon I would have been 20 at the time.

I was in there for what seemed at the time to be ages before finally someone must have spied me and eventually ushered me out via an exit between the South and West stands.

Terrific night that. I was a bit tipsy for that one too.

We met some Dundee United fans in Jeremiah’s Taproom and one of them had had nailed 2 bottles of wine on the train down and was absolutely slaughtered before the game.

In the 70s we were allowed to take alcohol on supportersc buses and didn't we enjoy that privilege.

Aberdeen trips were legendary. I was ejected from Pitodrie with a mate once for being too pished, but we just paid to get back in.

One of the most drunken trips was away to Berwick Rangers on New Years Day 1981.

We had all been at the same Hogmanay parties and were still obviously worse for wear in the morning. That didn't stop us taking an enormous carry-out which we demolished as well as taking advantage of the "official stops"n

One of the guys tried to take a bottle of Gelnfiddich into the ground, but when the police wanted to confiscate it, he went back to the bus and fell asleep cuddling it!

Hibs won 2-0 I'm told, but for years I thought it was a 1-1 draw. 🍻

I thought that the alcohol bus ban came into force that year, but I can't find confirmation of the date.

I was very drunk at a particular NY derby at ER in the early 90s that I believe may have actually featured in the film & book Trainspotting. It's the one where Renton has gone cold turkey off the skag and his folks take him to the NY derby to "cheer him up". We got horsed 4-1 and it was that horrible that I left at half time when we were 4-0 down and repaired to a pub off Easter RD. We actually scored a goal in the 2nd half but it was an own goal - in my pished state I was greatly upset that we couldn't even score our own F-ing goals and chucked my nip glass at a wall in frustration (yes I know - unbelievably stupid). So - we were chucked out the pub and made our way to a chippy where I somehow managed to borrow a guitar off a passing nun waiting for her fish supper (I kid you not) - I was then admonished by the chippy owner for striking up with a chorus of "I've got the Mother F-ing Hibees Blues" or somesuch nonsense. The guitar was duly returned to Sister and we then made our way to a NY Party and carried on regardless - back in those days I had stamina!

Leeds at elland road mid 70s… I was about 16, half bottle o whisky and six cans before the train left Waverley. Ill all the way down and all the way back. Nearly got thrown off at Newcastle on the way back as I was sick in the carriage. Policing at its best … tho it was my fault. Played them off the park big Higgins might’ve won the game but didn’t . Second leg 0-0 and Paddy missed the only penalty in 10. They were so lucky but again we missed chances. Them were the days.

Aberdeen away meant the usual stop in Laurenskirk before and after the game. 7am start in the Nip before the bus left at 7.45am and a decent carry out for the trip up (horrible flashback about trying cider mixed with benylin on one trip).

There's many a visit up there when I can't remember the actual game which is probably and good thing as we didn't win many.

Funniest I've ever seen was a fellow Scotland fan at the game in Dortmund (2014, I think).

Struggled to find his seat on the way in and immediately fell asleep. Woke up for about ten seconds to cheer Scotland's goal... then fell asleep again until the game was finished.

No matter how loud the crowd was, he never woke up at any other point, so I've no idea how he knew Scotland had scored

Semi Final v Rangers at Hampden. 1-0 Hibs with Burridge a hero and Keith scoring. We started drinking heavily about 10am and were blootered hours before the game but young enough and used to drinking at that point so kept hammering the pints and nips. I knew we had won in the morning but couldn't remember the score and despite my relative youth it was one of the happiest but worst hangovers I have ever had. Semi Finals, finals and derbies our group was always on the sauce 6 or 7 hours before ko and way worse for wear at the game. I can't remember any fighting or pitch invasions etc though but just loads of singing and firing abuse at opposition supporters and fans. Unfortunately there was probably a bit of abuse towards JT and Brian Hamilton. Thankfully I'm tee total now and bite my tongue as best I can if we have players underperforming now.

Personally too many contenders to pick one and embarrassingly for a man of my age too many of them are too recent for comfort :greengrin

Back at the 2002 league cup semi against Ayr United my pals daughter who would have been about 14 at the time had been swigging out of a bottle of vodka being passed around our bus without anybody noticing. By the time we got to Glasgow she was smashed and in spite of her drunken protestations we wouldn't allow her to stay on the bus .... she slept all the way through the game until 20 minutes into extra time when she woke up, shouted ''Hibs this is *****'' and promptly fell asleep again.

Oh how I wish I had been able to sleep through what was one of the coldest and worst Hibs games I have ever been to :greengrin

Not Hibs-related, but the worst I've ever been was at a Middlesbrough evening kick-off at West Brom, late 80s or early 90s, when afternoon drinking in England had just started so it was a novelty.

I'd got an early train to Wolverhampton, and I was in the pub from opening. My plan was to have a few drinks in Wolverhampton, then get the train back to West Bromwich in time for the game to meet my brother, who was driving. The thing was that I'd been drinking for 6 or 7 hours solid, so I was absolutely hammered.

The train had really old carriages, with doors at the ends of rows of seats. At my stop I couldn't work out that I needed to pull the window down and open the door from the outside, and I was drunkenly fumbling with the inside, after having tripped over loads of bags and feet. Just as the train guard's whistle was blowing someone opened the door, and a hand shoved me through the door to land in a heap on the platform.

Boro won a poor game 1-0 with a late Bernie Slaven winner, but my problems still weren't over. I persuaded my brother to come to a pub with me after the game, where I managed to shut myself in a toilet cubicle. I eventually started shouting for help, and a group of West Brom fans shoved the jammed door in. My brother had been standing on his own at the bar for ages and wondered where the heck I'd been.

Old East stand about 15 years ago had relatively tight jeans on. Hands in both pockets and fell forward. My chin landed on the guys shoulder in front who was trying to shake me off, I couldn't get my hands out of tight pockets or had any movement as was too drunk. I kinda just rested my chin where it was with a guy going daft at me 😂

Those were the days 😂. I’m like you, can’t remember many games.
After the game the bus dropped us off at a pub/ disco on the outskirts and we had to make our way back to a pick up point later in the evening to get back to Edinburgh
I can’t remember the name of it, but we went there for years
Also I have a feeling that the pick up time was around 11pm/ midnight !
I’m pretty sure a few other supporters buses went there as well

I was always jealous of the branches that stayed because Hawkhill went straight back although I think we had a stop somewhere.

Sept 76 - Sochaux v Hibs in Montbeliard. I was one of the fortunates / unfortunates to make this trip on one of two buses from Curran Minibus Hire. Highlights (as I remember them!)

- First night - went out to some French boozer and got hammered. Ended up speaking (in pidgin French) to some French geezer (with pidgin English) and when I looked up, all of my fellow Hibbys had gone. Said French bloke (as pissed as me) ran me about town in his 2CV looking for my hotel, which I could only know from recognising the building as I had no idea where it was or what it was called (still dont). I got to the room - they were doubles and you were sharing - went to the loo with my head in the bidet boking up. I then turned on the taps in the bidet and fell backwards on the loo floor. When I awoke some time later, freezing, I was shoulders deep in water and some little bits of stomach contents. I then clambered into the shared bed like something from the beast from twenty thousand fathoms beside my roommate - Billy. That MIGHT be Billy Hibs of this parish from some things that are posted on here and if it is, please accept by belated apologies 44 years late! I was woken by the chambermaid tutting - no sign of Billy!

- Third day (way home) - some folk on the bus (not me) had food (or maybe alcohol) poisoning. We kept stopping for 'toilet breaks' and eventually Curran said we'd miss the ferry if that went on - so a bucket for up the back of the bus was bought and I recall someone opening the emergency door of the bus at one point and emptying it over a neighbouring car at the traffic lights.

Other 'highlights' on this trip - the drivers on our bus changing over whilst travelling at 70mph. A 'pagger' in the bus aisle between Jackie Curran and one of the unfortunate supporters who was kicked off and left someplace in central France - although I did see him at Parkhead on the Saturday.

Im fairly sure it was St Giles that organised this jamboree and Im also fairly sure I have some old, actual, photographs in a box somewhere - feel free to fess up if you were one of the culprits on this fiasco!

Game ended 0-0, Hibs won 1-0 on aggregate - I was actually sober for about 90 minutes on the trip - for the match itself.

Dnipro away. Ridiculously cheap vodka meant I have very little recollection of being at the game.

Stevie managed to get a police escort (along with the famous horses head) through the home end to behind the goals at the away end that night, messy indeed! 😀

He had my ticket on him, I've no recollection of how I got in!

Haha I do remember not realising they’d scored to go 2-1 up as I was still under a pile of bodies celebrating Deek’s equaliser

the 0-3 celtic cup final when hooper and stokes took the p!ss. I went to the toilet 15-20 minutes in and had no idea where i was by the time i got back to the top of the stairs... just went and sat in a random stairway until i was moved on... not my proudest moment.

Quite a few with little recollection of the game, which wasn't a bad thing in the 80's. 91 semi v rangers an early start and never even made the turnstile.

Possibly, the worst story of all !

Spent Hogmanay drinking and first footing and never got to bed at all. Managed to get to the New Year's Day match with my brother. Didn't find my friends that I went to all the games with and was propped up against a crush barrier and I really have very little recollection of the game itself.

It was January 1, 1973 !

I was absolutely sloshed for the 2016 league cup final. My cousin brought along a bottle of vodka which had been infused with the devils lettuce and that was game over for me.

The game is a blur, the journey home was a nap and getting the train out to Falkirk I had several near altercations with rugby fans winding me up about the score. My saintly wife was my saviour that night.

Was quite drunk for the 2016 final, otherwise I probably wouldn't have went on the pitch and got some grass.

OH WAIT!! - is the Police investigation still on-going?

Expect a visit from a DR reporter

Motherwell away about 5 years ago, don’t know why but I was absolutely legless for a change I usually barely get drunk despite having a huge tolerance. That melted they refused me entry to the stadium and I sat getting even more pished in the pub, by the time the game finished and my pals came out I was indecipherable, then got run over by a car outside the grey horse when I got back. Wasn’t that badly hurt just a sore on my right side and the boy had a bit bonnet damage which was paid for by myself of course. The worst hangover of my life the day after which I never had a drink for 8 months till my cousins birthday.

The Clover Leaf? I recall one of our guys lost his false teeth outside the club, and a few of us helped find them for him just before the bus left for home. Happy days

Started drinking at mates house in Gorebridge at 7am, bus left the Goth in Gorebridge at 10am, was steaming before I left Gorebridge. In Glasgow for 12 straight to pub, left pub at 2:50pm. Got to stadium at 3:10pm, gates closed and not accepting tickets. Went to Dunfermline end to try entry but
whilst in the queue got lifted for being drunk and incapable. Spent game in the cells. Mates were wondering where I was after the game but were not surprised I got lifted due to state of me in the bus going to game! Not my finest hour , but never got charged.

Scottish cup semi at Dens 1986. The night before finished drinking at about 4.00am at a flat in Leith. Did not go home and crashed at the flat with another 3 mates who were all going to the game. 2 hours later one of the guys woke us up and suggested we go to a pub in Leith that opened early and did breakfast rolls and served drink. Had a few drinks got taxi to Dalkeith to get bus to the game, another few cans downed quickly before getting on the bus to Dundee. Managed to get into the Clep for even more drink and then the game. Missed a fair chunk of the game as going back and forwards to the toilet

Straight back into the pub for 3 more pints og guinness then I bought chips after and ate them too quick and ended up sat in easter road throwing them up into an up-turned traffic cone...Happy days:greengrin(Apologies for the delay in reading - replying). That game would have been Gareth Evans' debut.

Mine was hearts away, think it was the Mercer minute silence one where we got hammered.

Train at Leeds 6am with 6 pack on train. Got to Edinburgh and drank from 10am in various pubs, pretty sure it was 3pm kick off.

Steaming at the game, kicked out after having a disagreement with the police.

Loads hibs fans outside and they were all saying it was unbelievable I had traveled up for it, how did i get tickets and laughed at me being kicked out etc

Ended up in a pub somewhere with a few of them nailing top shelf drinks.

Remember getting back to Waverley station with an hour until my train but ended up in the pub, missed my train and ended up on last one. Got told my ticket was no longer valid and had to buy another one. Was pretty young back then and had next to no money. Don't even know how I paid for it.

A group of hearts fans on the train give me grief all the way back too.

Live the dream. This thread has been class.

Hibs 7 - 0 livingston

Had a habit at that time of splitting a bottle of vodka between me and my mate and then heading to city. (Now the fancy bar outside waverly?)

Anyway, we brought forward our plans a couple hours, tanned the vodka en route to easter road, watched us win 7-0 then went to city.

£3 a double vodka coke. Good days.
