Just a wee end of weekend treat...what a great young bunch of players in that team.
This was one of John Collins' early games as manager. I was there and remember thinking he was the man to take us to a whole new level.

If I remember rightly, Boozy with an outrageous piece of drag back wrong footing skill on the right touchline, bamboozled the full back put a pin point cross onto the napper of Fletcher who heads it back across the keeper into the postage stamp corner, which would have been 5 nil at half time but the ref ruled against for a nudge in the back...it was never a foul. :greengrin

I was at the game and remember being gutted when Motherwell scored.

What a team that was, though.

The four months from when Collins took over to us winning the League Cup were absolutely ****ing mad.
I'd only started attending Hibs games from 2006 and even then I knew it wasn't going to be like this forever.

Was there, what a team.! A blend of our own youth and great signings in Murphy, Killen, Boozy, Benji and Sproule. They’d be absolutely rampant in
todays SPL.

I wonder who would win in a one off game the Hibs team from that 4 month period under Collins or the team under 4 months of Lennon? 🤔 possibly swayed by that Mowbray/Collins team being my favourite ever team, but think they would just edge it.
Genuinely think we could have won the league if the golden generation came through under the modern club Dempster helped build and Ron’s regime where he’s not afraid to hold onto players and invest in the team thus keeping it together longer than we did. Still my favourite period supporting Hibs though.
I wasn't at this game but my memory of this day was being up town for my birthday night out at Bar Kohl and bumping in to Scott Brown & Dean Shiels at the same venue. Who were rightly on an ego trip after their performances that afternoon!

I reckon the Lennon team would win it. Close though.

That Mowbray/Collins teams was something special, was probably only a Goalie and 1 or 2 others from being really good.

Mowbray built some side. Brilliant time to be a Hibs supporter that.

Would be a great game but my money would fairly confidently be on the Mowbray / Collins team. Better defenders in Jones, Murphy and Whittaker - and better attacking options in Killen, Benji and Fletcher. Add Scott Brown, Boozy and Sproule to that..

I remember rocking up to the League Cup Final in 2007 more in hope than expectation
I needn’t have worried
Must have had every season of the year in that one 90 minutes with excellent performances from a young Lewis Benji and Steven Fletcher and looking back what a starting line up we had back then
Never in doubt

Better fullbacks, certainly, but centre backs easily with Lennon's side. Ambrose, Hanlon and McGregor were brilliant that season. Better than Jones and Hogg were from what I remember.
Marciano also a much better keeper than McNeil.
Really miss both teams actually. Really fun to watch. Could beat anyone.

That brief sort of 6-9 month spell where it really worked for Collins is amongst my favourite times as a Hibs fan. Sitting in the away end as we spanked Rangers 1-0 complete with a session of "Ole ole" as we passed around them like they weren't there was wonderful

I was there that day. Also remember Sportscene showing the move as a highlight even though it only resulted in a free kick on the halfway line such was our dominance.

Yep, the 1-0 (going on 7-0) League Cup win over the yams was around that time and of course the cup final itself. A 4-1 Scottish Cup replay win v the sheep was another highlight.
Lots of goals back then. Remember thumping Livi 7-0 under Mowbray plus (IIRC) 6-0 v Gretna when we were 4 up in about 15 mins.

Just a shame Collins's ideas were ahead of his time but his man management was stuck in the 70s. Could have been a great manager

Not forgetting we had Riordan and O'Connor until not long before this game. The fact we were able to overcome the loss of two such prolific young strikers and mould an arguably even more exciting team underlines the depth of talent we had in the squad.

Absolutely brilliant player that always seemed to have time on the ball. Really sad that his career was blighted by injury and that he was forced to retire just after his 30th birthday. On checking the stats, I had forgotten that we actually got £1.5m when he moved to Birmingham at the age of 24. Not a bad deal for someone we signed on a free transfer

It's ironic that the 1-0 v Hearts is brought up in a thread championing this team's ability to take their chances, if we'd done that on that night we'd have been into 6-2/0-7 scoreline territory.

IIRC Boozy was at the fulcrum of that move, seemed like he made every 2nd pass. A clip is needed!

Right enough. Of course it would be the yams who were the team we passed up a hatful of chances against. Been so many derbies down the years when they've avoided a bit of a doing. That particular game could easily have been another 7-0. Pretty sure we our possession was at ridiculous levels, circa 80 or 90 per cent.

It's very typical, eh? 81% possession that night. Absolutely battered them.

Makalambay, Chisholm, McCann, Morais, Antoine-Curier, O’Brien all played in that match and the win put us top of the league as the only unbeaten team in the league at the start of October.
