A good article. English premiership spent more than Spain Germany France and Italian top clubs combined. Will they ever be caught?

I don’t think they need to be caught yet as I don’t think they’re necessarily any better than the likes of Real Madrid, Bayern, PSG etc generally speaking.

It’ll come soon though and when it does I don’t think anyone will be able to compete.

In terms of the Championship - Prem gap, there’ll always be 3 teams getting a go at the riches of the Premiership so the gap maybe won’t end up too big. It’ll probably end up with it being the same rotation of teams going up and down though.

I think the problem is that FFP is now considered by the big clubs as a tiny tax on operating costs. When PSG are ‘fined’ £8 million for basically ignoring the regulations, not even a few minutes profit gained on their owners oil revenues, and Man City just getting a warning that their future compliance will be ‘monitored’, they may as well not bother.

I enjoy watching the champions league, so to that extent I’m part of the problem as an enthusiastic consumer! But at some point genuine competition will just become a thing of the past without spending controls that work.

As an aside, The Rangers are one of the clubs that have just been warned that their future finances will be monitored

Not exactly sure how much of a threat that sounds, TBH.

The Champs League is turning into the SuperLeague all by itself. Same 10 clubs or so fighting it out through their wealth.

Basically mega rich dudes having a who's got the biggest dick competition.

The Premier League is good in that I get to see a lot of decent payers but I don't give a damn what the score is any game or who wins what.

Counts for nowt when you're buying your trophies.

I hope in my lifetime something is done about the lack of competitive balance in European football but I won’t hold my breath. It’s a scandal that brutal regimes like Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi can buy our clubs and use them to sports wash their image and barely a word is said.

The net spend of Notts Forest was greater than that of the La Liga, Serie A and Bungesliga clubs alone! The whole thing stinks. Just a glorified Chinese Super League for me. None of the teams won anything in Europe last season. For all the hype the big two are miles off Bayern and the new Barca for me also. I refuse to believe Pellegrini or Mancini wouldn’t have won multiple champions leagues in the period Abu Dhabi have spent nearly 2 billion in also. The fact they haven’t won it is laughable in itself. Half of the teams in the league are dross which in itself is remarkable considering the money involved.

You’ve got two different statements muddled up there, Nottingham Forest have spent more than all the Championship sides and Brazilian sides combined. And the English premier league OVERALL has spent more than the other top 4 combined. Still some bonkers stats though.

I read elsewhere about Forest’s net spend being more than the net spend of clubs of the other leagues alone. It’s a risky strategy for me but I guess if they stay up it would probably pay for itself? On a side note I completely disagree with Barcelona’s recent approach in regarding finances.

The one I read was Forests spend at £140 million, is bigger than that of the Eredivisie in Holland.

I think of Forest as being plucky underdogs but FFS that’s a mad amount of money.

They're a disgrace and it should have been stopped.

All leagues are the same. One or two teams outspending to the deterioration of competition.

It's pish

Premier League is getting interesting (out with the top 6); Brighton & Brentford being run properly with sophisticated player recruitment, Everton recruitment is a shambles, Steven Gerrard being found out and Bournemouth and Leicester increasingly looking like they are aim to run at break-even.

Not a chance Man City are miles off any team.

They might not win the CL this season, but put them up against any side and they are at the very least giving that side an extremely difficult game.
