Just bit the bullet and finally got one. Made steak and chips and we are blown away.

Any meal recommendations?

If you’re on Facebook, there’s loads of groups with people sharing recipes and tips. I just got the Ninja foodie, 15 in 1 and the pro max health grill. My sons used the grill for frozen stuff but I’ve not tried it yet, the 15 in 1 is amazing though.

I use mine purely for chips. Never really made anything else in it but it’s still worth it just for the chips :greengrin

Much better than the oven.

Sausages, chicken thighs and stuff, chips.

Contrary to the above I'd avoid the Facebook pages. I know lots of similar pages are bad but the air fryer ones seem to attract the most stupid people I have ever encountered!

Chips are a different world compared to the oven, mixed vegetables too. Chicken is tremendous too. Agree with chicken thighs they are cheap and taste better than breast. Dip them in flower and some spice, in airfryer and that's it amazing.

Quicker and cheaper than using the oven if cooking a small amount too

I was listening to the wireless during the week when they were discussing air fryers. Because its smaller, quicker warm up times, more intense heating meaning a lower temperature is needed and quicker cooking times an air fryer could save as much as £50 a year over conventional ovens.

They are a bit of a bugger to clean so make sure if you get one the dirty bits are dishwasher proof.

Some saving that from just one machine. It's a bonus that I reckon just about everything tastes better than a conventional oven, all meat is so much juicier

You can do tofu really nicely..chop into chunks, toss in corn flour spray with oil…20 mins tossing half way.

I also like tenderstem broccoli again toss in olive oil and maybe sesame oil salt and pepper…10mins till starts to get a bit crispy, very nice

falafel, spring rolls, pakoras, tortilla with refied beans cheese and tomato….all regulars here..love it

i’d recommend getting an oil sprayer too

I like tower one my mums got. I've got ninja but I would have spent less and got tower as I don't use any of the loads of fun. If borisnomics works and this saves you £50 over an oven then you will get it free by the end of the year and all troubles will be gone ha

It’s true 😉

.. although after soaking to remove starch I spray with sunflower oil, so it’s not “technically” oil free. 🤔

i've been on and off looking at the Tower T17024 for several weeks now(including Tesco) and because of my dithering it's now up an extra £8 to £60 on Amazon, but still £20 cheaper than it's recommended price, then i ended up looking at that one just last night, would the 17024 do the bizz for just myself and the odd occasion my lady friend is visiting :dunno: i don't mind paying more if there's a better one out there

Yeah 17024 would be perfect. Good size at 4.3l for the two of you if spending more your just getting bigger size and options. As I say I never use the options just pick a temp and time.

If its just one or two of you, you'll certainly get a good saving rather than putting on the oven.

Just think of it as a few takeaways in price. I just done a pork joint tonight, took half the time it would have in oven. Unbelievably moist too and cheap, dinner tonight and sandwiches tomorrow

I bought the Philips XXL. Originally bought it for the caravan but it's found a permanent place in our kitchen. It can take a whole chicken, just rub it in some oil, add salt and paprika and it produces the best chicken I've tasted. Skin is crispy and the meat is still nice and juicy.

If you can’t be bothered making your own I’d use the ones from a fridge in a supermarket. They work way better than frozen imo.

We could probably do with a new sub-board for air fryers but is there any chance folk could post temps & cooking times for their recipe suggestions.
I only ask as I succumbed and bought a Ninja Foodi a few months back but hardly use it as when I try to use it, I'm failing miserably.
I've yet to succeed in cooking anything like a decent chip. The best I've managed is to cook a half decent steak Lorne in less than half the time I normally would using the grill.
I've also cooked a granary boule but that was using the steam bake function,,,, not the steak and potato wedges I was hoping for 🙄

For those unaware there are at least 3 types of air fryer.

Under £50, the one I currently have and they're very basic, in fact I'd hardly call them an air fryer. It's really just a tiny oven with a heating element but no air circulation. It does the job.

The likes of the Tefal Actifry, around £100, doesn't have air circulation either but moves the food around as it cooks. The food it cooks is really good. Its useless for chips and softer things as they tend to break up with the movement. There's also an issue with bones, chicken thighs and legs. They can become jammed in the movement and break the machine even if you're careful. I broke 3 or 4 and despite the really good cooking results sadly had to give up on them.

The others actually do have air circulation, more than one cooking basket, bells and whistles and start off relatively cheap and go up to ridiculous prices. They're the type I'd suggest you upgrade to having started with a cheapy one, got used to the using it and looking out for the functions in the expensive ones that best suit your needs.

I think we could struggle with heat and time as we all have different machines.

For example I do skinny frozen chips. Normal ovens that's supposed to be 200c for 20 minutes. Through trial and error I've found the best setting for a single portion (me) is 12 minutes at 180c; two portions (me and Mrs Jackie) is adding on just 2 minutes.

Whatever type of oven anyone uses pre heating is crucial! If you've got a meat thermometer, or similar, it's also worth checking the actual temperature of your oven against what the dial says now and again.

We've got one of the ninja ones. It's essentially just a small, powerful fan oven. It's easy to use and easy to clean and pretty economical. So yes, I think it would be a good option.

I have a ninja, great bit of kit with loads of different cooking functions.

A wee tip, when cooking bacon or sausages etc I use the bake function as it cooks faster and seems to taste better.
I don't know if this will be the case for other brands.

I think it technically roasts rather than fries, but since most people buy them to make chips, I can see why the marketing makes sense. Chips, chicken drumsticks and thighs and roast veg are our main things, but I think you can pretty much do anything you can do in an oven, albeit with less capacity.

Chips wise, it's worth par-boiling first I think, then a wee shake of the pan to rough them up a bit, coat with a couple of tbsps of oil and then into the air fryer. I do 180 for 15 mins then "max crisp"* for a few mins to get them crisped up.

* ninja term, I think it's just max temp, which is 240C for ours.

Sounds like it might be the answer. On the subject of par-boiling chips, I do this in a regular oven too. Was never impressed with home-made oven chips until I tried this, and I prefer them to the fried ones. Parboiling FTW :rockin:

Yes, it does everything.
Grill, air fryer, pressure cooker, slow cooker, saute and baking.

Made creme caramel in it last week and it was decent, going to have go at making yoghurt soon.

I'd prefer buying something under 100 quid, so his one caught my eye on eBay and comes with decent reviews.

Its 1500 watts and is around 70 quid on eBay.

Has anyone on here bought this model ? if so any comments/advice would be appreciated.

There are more air fryer recipes on You Tube than you can poke a stick at.
We mainly use ours for chicken breast / thighs / drumsticks and is excellent. Usually coat them in a mix of soy sauce, garlic salt and paprika, mixed with a bit of olive oil.
Also good for hard vegetables, carrots, tattles and neeps, though as brought up on another post, best to par boil first. Also do a really nice crisp cauliflower.
The best gadget we have ever purchased for the kitchen and is not gathering dust alongside the George Foreman grill and the sandwich maker.

Bizarrely, you can also boil eggs in them (technically cook eggs in their shells since no water involved), but tbh, just boiling them normally is easier.

Well, just had a shot with it and not too bad for a first attempt.

I just did a couple of chicken breasts that I had seasoned with garlic and herbs - 20 mins turning them over halfway. I have meat thermometer so I used it at the end and the thickest part of the breast wasn't quite as high as I would have like so bunged it in for another five mins

I could have cut that extra time in half tho! The chicken wasn't dry but not as moist as I would have expected but not a bad start. In fact, it was such a good start that I finished off the chicken lol, I was going to use it in a salad later

One thing that's not obvious is that you shouldn't use those cooking oil sprays in air fryers (or any non-stick pan) – they contain lecithin as an emulsifier which will gradually build up on the surface and is a real pain to clean off. See: https://lifehacker.com/please-dont-put-cooking-spray-in-your-air-fryer-1849626915

It's a weird one because a significant chunk of air fryer recipes online specifically suggest using cooking sprays.

As that article suggests, you can often get away with no oil or just oiling the food a little, but I generally do apply a little oil to the basket itself. You could use a homemade spray bottle with only oil in it, but for me the simplest way is to use something like a silicone pastry brush.

If you do end up with a lecithin build-up (as I did), you can clean it by submerging it in water with plenty of detergent and simmering it for a while – my air fryer is part of a multicooker so I could do this directly in the multicooker's pan, but with a standalone air fryer I guess you'd need to do it on the hob so it would depend on having a big enough pan to hold the basket.

Living on my own, I use a fairly small one. I use it for basic stuff but aim to try more adventurous recipes. A basic use for me - set at 200 deg. for 15 mins. Couple of sausages in for full time, couple of rashers of bacon in at 7 mins and turn sausages. Large halved tomato and a few mushrooms in at 5 mins. Meanwhile, fry an egg or make some scrambled egg. I’ve not tried egg in the fryer yet but might be pushed for space.

I like the way you think, Jim. :applause:

Also now joined the revolution. A friend was selling an unused American Corsera machine so bagged it. Great for one person, thumbs up. I end to lack imagination with cooking in general so looking around for ideas also. There seems no shortage.

Awww no, it just dries it out! Haha frying pan, touch of rapeseed oil (scottish) and a medium to high heat on the hob is the only way.

I must admit though, healthy cooking in the air fryer is unbeatable. I’m on a cutting diet just now and a lot of recipes burn and ruin the pan when you cook traditionally. In the air fryer though, recipes comes out good!

:agree:

Not roast potatoes though. That's one thing I certainly don't do the fryer - some things are meant to be done right.

Anything unhealthy, roast potatoes especially, are better the old way!! Plenty of oil

Thing is, there are different kinds of air fryer. I have a Tower Air fryer Which is very much a conventional oven with mesh shelves that allow the heat to circulate and cook evenly and any fat drips through to the drip tray.

Bacon, 👍

Even a Rotisserie chicken is great!!

Other brands have trays that are enclosed and ingredients needs to be turned during cooking.

Anyone tried any of the KFC recipes for airfryer that are available on YouTube and how did it turn out?

Can recommend M&S roast potato seasoning (oven use). For some reason the price has not increased, still £1.

Nah, you need to learn how to use it.

And…….frying bacon in a pan requires no oil whatsoever!

Re bacon in the airfryer, I take the basket out and sit a cake tin in instead. Bacon doesn't dry out and it renders the fat beautifully.

I've got the basic, 1st edition Philips Airfryer and it's been on the go for 8 years. It was my mrs and I's first domestic purchase.

We sometimes do roast potatoes in our ninja, it has a pressure cooker which we use for parboiling as well as the air fryer functionality. Took a bit of trial and error as didn't quite realise how quick the pressure cooker was to cook which resulted in roasties that fell apart lol.

They do come out pretty decent albeit not as good as the traditional parboil/oven roast but the convenience of easier cleaning makes up for it.

You can't be sacrificing on the quality of roast potatoes. That's a red line for me. I'd rather clean my whole house after a perfect plate of roast potatoes than have a less than adequate roastie with no clean up.

:aok: 100% agreement from here. No compromising on roast potatoes.

Noticed this airfryer has £50 off, now £69.99 (nearly half price) in Lakeland. Think you get a discount on a first purchase if you become a member in-store, although this might have changed.
