The use of multi ball has to be looked at
. Two balls on the pitch on numerous occasions. This was a great excuse for Hertz to slow the game down. Instead of them kicking the ball into touch they would tap it to the side & leave it on the pitch. Preventing Hibs from taking throw ins quickly.

2 balls on the pitch when Hearts had a throw in was deliberate to stop them taking quick throw ins however ball boys need told not to do it when we are chasing the game.

The ball boys were in Easter Road on Wednesday being briefed and practicing how to ball boy the way our manager wants.

Most of the time it was fans launching it back into play.

The time wasting the last two games has actually worked in our favour with injury time added.
Imagine time wasting but, small club mentality.

Were there even any ball boys in the East today? Didn’t seem like it.

Exactly, fans need to use their brains and remember the days of just 1 match ball are long gone. Lee Johnson did it one time as well, so he needs to be smarter too.

Hibs have done away with having volunteer ball boys and brought in the academy players who were briefed on Wednesday based on Celtics ball boys. LJ’s idea like the team will maybe take a bit of practice to and time to gel.

The law was updated some years ago to allow for 2 balls on the pitch, as long as the one not being used wasn't interfering with play. I believe this was to stop time-wasting, but the way Hearts did it was cute, as the 2 balls were always in close proximity.
(if) an extra ball, other object or animal enters the field of play during the
match, the referee must:
– stop play (and restart with a dropped ball) only if it interferes with play
– unless the ball is going into the goal and the interference does not
prevent a defending player playing the ball; the goal is awarded if the
ball enters the goal (even if contact was made with the ball) unless the
interference was by the attacking team
– allow play to continue if it does not interfere with play and have it
removed at the earliest possible opportunity

A definite tactic by Hearts and one which could have worked so well. However, Brother Beaton did one thing right all day and add a decent amount of injury time on

I felt bad for the wee laddies who were ball boys today, they dinnae really understand what to do.
For the next derby I’d have Hibs casuals as the ball boys.

LJ was having a go at one of them to his right at one point
More of a concern for me was the lack of clarity between the team on who should be taking the throw ins. Happened at least twice. One where Cabraja went to get it off Newell, Joe doesn't give it to him and instead of getting into a position on the pitch, Cabraja stood behind the sideline and just watched him take it.
Little things but need picked up

Another manager who doesn't work on throw ins. It's never changed since the 80s when I started watching.

Watch the winning goal back - specifically the winning goal.

I think more to the point is where the wee cones have gone to put the spare balls.
The EPL has introduced them this season to speed up play yet in Scotland they seem to have disappeared. I get that they first came in for pointless ‘sanitation’ for Covid but they defo help in making balls available for players. Esp. goalkeepers looking to take a quick goal kick.

I don’t know if I’ve been overly conscious about it at the last 2 games as we’ve been searching for a goal but it would be interesting to see just how much time the ball was out of play against St Johnstone and Hearts. There were periods in both games around mid 2nd half where id be surprised if there was 2mins of a actual play during a 10-15min spell due to players going down, subs coming on etc. God knows how they calculate time added on🤷🏼

Sure I heard that against St J the ball was in play for a total of 41 mins

Doesn’t surprise me at all🙈
I can understand the hearts players that didn't actively move toward the extra ball to kick it out but the one Boyce bent down to pick up then ignored can't be something that happens going forward. As good a booking as kicking the ball away.

TBF it looked like Marshall went and got a ball at every corner to ensure there was no quick ones being taken before we were ready.
Amazing how quick players find new ways to get around new rules like multi ball.

We'd clearly worked in the ball boys/girls. Balls were coming on as players gestured for them at corners and throw ins. Hearts have been playing the two balls on the park game for years. Caveman had previous for picking the ball up then dropping it behind him in a "casual" throw away and refs do F/A. Did my nut in at Hampden.
