And we’re off in the first game of the season! 🇳🇬
Ron’s five-year plan has been impacted by Covid but off the park, there is little doubt that there’s been significant investment and as a marketing business, the club is making strides. He and Ben have clearly identified the opportunities to drive up revenue which will then increase the funds available for the player budget.
On the football side, there’s a new 3-tier pyramid in place to transition players into the first team. This is to address our biggest failure which has seen a tiny return on the investment in the academy in the way of young players coming through into the first team and holding down a regular spot. In 15 years since East Mains opened, how many players have come through from, say, U14/15 and ended up as a first-team regular?
In pre-season, our three squads (First team, Development and U18’s) have only lost one game out of 13 over 90 minutes with a goals for against of 41-9. The intent across all three squads is to utilise the same playing style. I’m not convinced we would have seen such a glut of goals playing Jack Ross football.
Most Hibs supporters acknowledge that with the creation of that new squad, the significant changes to the coaching team and a signing policy focused on international rather than home-grown players, it will take us until 2023 to start to see the benefits of this three squad approach.
So with so many coaches and players needing to find their feet in the SPL, and the squads needing time to play together and create a settled team, we supporters need to hold our nerve in the stands and support what is tantamount to a brand new Hibs. There will be some bumps along the road, some adverse results and the odd gubbing.
But we are Hibs. If we get knocked down, we will get straight back up again. Let’s make sure that the support from the stands and in our social media never wanes and that provided the effort is there on the pitch, we will give every player our backing. GGTTH!!
