Sad news to hear of Drew Busby’s passing at the age of 74.

Slightly before my time but a player you instantly associate with Hearts and a player who was revered by their fans.

I remember him as an Airdrie player when he formed a prolific striking partnership with Drew Jarvie.

RIP.

That is sad news, he was a good player for both Airdrie and Hearts. Caused Hibs no end of trouble.

He didn't cause us no end of trouble though. We were derby top dogs by a distance during his time at Hearts.

The kind of centre forward who would batter defenders to get to the ball and knock goalies off their feet and over the line then claim for the goal! RIP Buzzbomb

He was a tough cookie of a centre forward. Hearts fans loved him. 74 is no age.

RIP.

You must be the same vintage as me.

I emigrated in 1974 so immediately connect him with Airdrie when I hear his name.

Sorry to hear he has passed away but he was no way a player that could have played for Hibs.Scored against us after the 7 - 0 game otherwise made no impression on me..

I was late to attending football matches, 15 years old when I saw my first Hibs game in the flesh in 1975, nae 'daddy lifting me high upon his shoulders' for this Hibby, but because of that Drew Busby was probably the first Hearts player I can remember abusing from the terraces during derby matches.

Players like him are all part of the rich pageant of derby rivalry and they make the game what it is ..... Rest in peace Mr Busby.

The fact that the Hearts fans still sing a song about him, over 40 years after he left them, just goes to show how highly he was regarded over there.

RIP Drew

A hard man who stood out in a team that was having a low period in the late seventies.

I'll think of him as a dynamic twin strike force with Drew Jarvie at Airdrie.

The Airdrie connection:)

I remember my Dad raging at DB breaking someone's shin-guard in an EOS Shield game against us. He was a real hate-figure for our fans.

Conversely, my Jambo mate remembers him as brilliant with younger fans.

My memory is of a guy everyone hated when he was playing against you. But, obviously a real hero on your side.

Indeed, he was a hard *******....hated him with a passion when he was with airdrie, and of course hearts. (That was when hearts really bullied us...sigh)

Hearts barely won against a game against Hibs in the 1970's, so whatever Busby bullying he did v Hibs, it didn't have much impact.

R.I.P to the Busby family.

:agree:

Was thinking the exact same

Drew Busby P 15 W 2 D5 L 8 against Hibs

An old fashioned bruiser of a centre forward all snarl elbows and knees

Always a pest

Deepest sincerest condolences to family and friends

RIP

You must be getting your eras mixed up. Busby played for Hearts at a time when they could rarely lay a glove on Hibs.

RIP Drew Busby. Read an interview with him not too long ago and he came across as a decent guy, which wasn't his image on the park.

He's a legend with those Hearts fans who are around my age and he was the type of player they all wanted at the time, especially when it came to playing us.

Even though he didn't have much success with the scorelines in derbies he left his mark in those games.

RIP and condolences to his family and friends .
Was a big hero with Hearts fans at the time though he played in a terrible Hearts team . Reality is that when he moved from Airdrie to Hearts he was actaully taking a step down . Certainly for us , a trip to Broomfield was far more complicated than a trip to Tyecastle in 1970s .

Is the word ‘really’ a typo for ‘rarely’ here? Would appear to make more sense. If am wrong, Apols!

Yes Broomfield was a tougher venue than Tynie back then but we did turn on the style to gub them 6-2 en route to winning the League Cup in 72. There's footage of it somewhere. Pretty sure Busby was playing. John Brownlie was outstanding.

No, seems you're bang on...as are all the other lads querying it.
All I recall is Busby being a hard so'n'so, and the period hearts went on a decent run unbeaten against us.
Which it seems are totally unrelated...oops.
RIP DB

I remember Busby making two ridiculous challenges in a Derby at ER, probably late 1970s, both right in front of the tunnel. Booked for the first one, sent off for the second, which laid Arthur Duncan’s shin open to the bone. John Lambie, who was Hibs “trainer” at the time, had to be physically restrained from attacking Busby when he saw the extent of Arthur’s injury. Typical Hearts animal of the time.
