Really don’t like the Open Goal YouTube channel but been self isolating and it came up on a YouTube loop of this - after retiring at 24 due to injury he’s tried to make a comeback at 30 and the documentary follows his progress and struggles.

I generally think on the podcast they’re insufferable (although the early interviews held by Simon Ferry were really good) but this was a great watch and have admiration for his efforts. Genuinely chuffed for him at the end too. Goes to show that even at non league level the fitness required to play regularly.

I’m on it just now and really enjoying it.

I thought he was brilliant in the Si ferry stuff for a long time but I’ve got bored of him the last 6 months to a year (maybe longer actually).

The first 15 minutes or so I was thinking of giving up on it as he was trying too hard to play the clown but really pleased I’ve persevered with it, when you see the real person behind the persona he’s built for himself it’s interesting.

No spoilers from anyone replying now please 😂

Goes to show the.mental struggles players endure when breaking down with persistent injuries. The mental strength it takes to play at or near the top level is greatly underestimated.

Well worth a watch.

This may be obvious but what struck me was how difficult it must have been to fail at Celtic. He’s had his whole life of everyone blowing smoke up his arse and then that’s all gone and he’s got nothing to show for it.

Must be thousands of footballers with similar stories. The mental and physical strength required must be massively underestimated.

I found myself almost getting emotional for him and his mum and I don’t know the guy 😂

I've been on a wee journey myself when it comes to liking Paul Slane, which I really do now.

Originally really liked the early open goal stuff, then when they started involving Slaney I couldn't stand the guy. Loud, annoying, spoke over everyone etc etc.

The more he was involved though I think the clearer it became he was struggling with mental health issues. I think Simon any Andy 'could have won the cup' Halliday, whilst bamming him up a fair bit, have been really good for him and clearly care about the guy.

Watched the documentary and honestly hope he gets a proper crack at it again. I knew he'd had injuries in the past and I do actually remember him being all over the papers, bit didn't quite realise how serious the injuries were. Means so much to his family as well so good luck to them.

Thought Faddy came across really well in the wee one to one he had with Paul as well.

Such a normal down to earth family that I’ve seen a hundred times now my boy is playing youth football.

Jamie O’Hara surprised me. Obviously plays the idiot on the radio but from the 5 minutes he was on that show you could tell he cared.

I hope he enjoys the rest of his life and finds some contentment in whatever he does. I've heard that he is also very good at coaching the kids and no doubt has a lot to bring to that when the time is right.

Paul Slane was a total bellend when doing the 1/4 final SC draw last season. Worse than Rod Stewart. And his voice is unbearable.

I'd honestly recommend giving the documentary a follow. I found him thoroughly annoying on the podcast for a while but that's completely changed my opinion of him. Wish him well for the future. Defo think he's putting the face of a clown on to mask how difficult it must be to have a dream taken away from you.
