it's taken a long time but finally, a very well deserved 30 years

R. Kelly given 30 years in jail for sex abuse - BBC News (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-61989606)

US singer R. Kelly has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for using his celebrity status to sexually abuse children and women.

The R&B artist, 55, was convicted last September in New York of racketeering and sex trafficking crimes.

He had faced years of allegations and the judge on Wednesday said he had an "indifference to human suffering"

He is also due to face trial in Chicago on child image and obstruction charges as well as sex abuse charges in Illinois and Minnesota.

There was video evidence of this **** at least 20 years back. Complete travesty it's taken this long.

That's what I don't understand. This wasn't even an open secret as some news outlets seem to be describing it. There was a video circulating 2 decades ago of him urinating on a 14 year old girl FFS. He was acquitted on that charge with all kinds of allegations of bribery and intimidation swirling around him.

Had the documentary not been made I genuinely wonder if he would ever have seen the inside of a courtroom again. It seems plenty people, including a lot of the music buying public, were happy to turn a blind eye.

It's only since Me Too that people have woken up and suddenly went "actually it's not okay for men to use power over people to openly get away with sexual assault". Took us long enough but we're getting somewhere.

Why did it take so long? It sounds like another 'open secret' of the Jimmy Savile kind. Why are these celebrities allowed to continue ruining lives for decades?

This is why I find the criticism from the right of 'Me too' very scary at times. Like any organic movement it isn't perfect, and means different things to do different people but it's without question to me that it was the driving force behind bringing some truly despicable individuals to justice.

The victim blaming culture in America is horrendous. I’ve watched lots of documentaries where because someone is popular or powerful, any allegations about them are just not believed and the accuser is publicly vilified. I’m surprised anyone comes forward.

Money. That's the simple answer to that i'm afraid.

Many people behind the scenes knew what Saville was like and the things he got up too but at the time he was the poster boy and their biggest asset. Sadly, it was deemed at the time that turning a blind eye so he could continue making them millions was more preferable than outing him and stopping his evil, sick crimes. Its awful but sadly when moneys involved some peoples morals go right out the window.
