View Full Version : Buzzing for the new season

Now that pre-season games are approaching and we're getting closer to competitive football again, I'm definitely starting to get excited for the new season now.
I felt pretty scunnered with Hibs by the end of the season, the poor football and the numerous disappointments that fuelled almost relentless (and at times way over the top) negativity made it a pretty grim experience thinking about and talking about Hibs.
Since Johnson has come in and the rebuild has started though, it feels like there's a definite shift in mood and I Sam really looking forward to seeing a dynamic young team in action soon.
A lot has been made of the ages of these signings, but I think we should have focused more on whether they are good players and I trust that they are. Certainly the noises around Kenneh and Tavares suggest that we've got players that might have been expected to have been out of our reach.
We'll see more from Melkersen, and Lewis Miller looks like a cracking young player as well.
I think we've just watched a season of really one-paced, risk-averse, bland football that really failed to catch our attention for most of the season.
I expect, given the work that's gone into identifying players of a certain physical profile, and Johnson's preference for speed and power, that there will be a very big shift in the style of play.
I'm really optimistic for the season, I can't wait to be back watching the team and I think it'll be a big season for the club.

Hopefully you're right the the shift in vibe at Hibs but TBH I can see football far enough at the moment. It doesn't seem as if it has really stopped and personally I think the close season is way too short.

Well said and I agree with you. I am wary of some of our signings as they are complete unknowns but I’m cautiously optimistic that they will turn out to be good. Also hoping LJ can turn around some of the players we already had at our disposal.
Got my tickets for the Clyde game and now pretty buzzing for meeting my mate for a pint in the Percy and discussing the season ahead. [emoji172]

If you can’t see football far enough why would you be on a forum talking about it?

As I said, I just think there's been too much of it lately, with international fixtures dragging well into June. Last season also turned into such a dismal one for Hibs that it'll take a while for me to feel a buzz about watching them again. Pre-season has never done much for me and at this time of year I prefer the chance to watch other sporting events like the Open, Wimbledon etc.

Can't wait for the new season.
I read somewhere that the games from Portugal will be broadcast on YouTube so I'll watch them and I'm eager to get along to Easter Road for the Clyde game.
Last season happened. It was **** and there's no hiding from that however there is no God or mortal being that could prevent me getting excited about going to Easter Road, meeting mates, seeing the Hibs team emerge from the tunnel, the shout of "Hibees! Hibees!" greeting them, or the first Hibs goal hitting the back of the net and the crowd erupting in a new season.
Warm up the spoon and inject that into my veins please.

Yup, I was pretty down about football by the end of last season. I was even thinking about not going to games as I wasn't enjoying them. Hibs had lost a bit of their magic for me.
Like everyone else I won't know the exact style of play or the quality of the new signings until the season starts but I like what I'm reading and hearing and am excited for the new season. Cannot wait now!

I feel the same way actually, though I am looking forward to the new season for me the Scottish cup final should be the climax of the season. They really dragged the arsed out of it this year. Since when were June internationals a thing?

Totally agree with the op though, I was done with Hibs by the end of the season and would happily have taken a 3 month break. That Dundee result really ****ed me off - nice to finish the season on a good result though.

Always looks forward to the new season.
I do sympathise with the view that last season seemed to drag on forever though. I like my summer break from the football and this year it feels like there has been about 2 weeks from Scotland finishing up and Hibs 1st LC game.
There are so many unknowns about us next season. I'm not convinced we are on course fora particularly successful season, albeit that view could change as more signings come in, but I'm increasingly sure it won't be boring.

I felt the same and was thinking of having a few years off til my son is ready to go to the games. But I really like what I hear from Lee Johnson and a few months helps put last season to bed.
I really think Maloneyball made a number of our players look a lot worse than they are. I expect more from many of them and obviously we'll hae some quality new players to help. Now I'm totally buzzing for the football to start.
Can't wait for this team to get going and win over some of the people who are still scunnered from last year.

Quite looking forward to seeing what will really be a new team. I think the way we play will be totally different and that’s good because the last year and a bit has really bored me.
Whether or not we’re going to be any good I have absolutely no idea. However it turns out, it won’t be for lack of backing IMO as we seem to be acting quickly to both bring players in and get rid of the ones that aren’t in the plans.

The last couple of months of 2021-22 felt like an obligation rather than something to be enjoyed, but as always a few weeks away from it and that old feeling's creeping back.
Should be old enough to know better by now, however in the last couple of days we've had the Clyde tickets going on sale, a couple of potentially exciting signings and Johnson's interview in the Scotsman this morning in which he again comes across as engaging, enthusiastic and committed, and suddenly that pre-season optimism is back. Possibly dangerous!

Looks like LJ building a team with genuine pace and guile. Would be interesting to see if all the new signings would get into the team for the opening league game of the season???. Or does he retain the nucleus of last year. Interesting times ahead.

Definite excitement. I think the squad's beginning to take shape and truthfully I think we need a few more in - CB, ST and another creative midfielder and accept that a few players may need to leave to facilitate that, but as long as they're fringe players then I'm happy with that.
This window is beginning to feel like there's a clear vision and goal for it - pace, creativity and attacking threat. I can't say it's always felt like that truthfully and a big improvement on the horrorshow that was January.

I think one thing looks obvious with most of signings we’re going to be a pretty mobile and on the front foot team it may take a few games to click but like majority of fans I’m excited about the new season starting with Clyde on the 9th July canny wait ggtth

It might work out well that we've got the League Cup group stages this year. Four games against (on paper) easier opposition to bed the new players in before we get going properly.

Feels a little 2004 and the start of the Mowbray era. Fans questioned it to start with, we had a good nucleus to the squad who had under achieved playing horrible football the year before and the club took a lot of flak.
Mowbray came in, talked a good game, got us playing attacking football and made some pretty astute signings.
LJ has already superceded him by signing a proper keeper.
It's exciting.

It seems weird on the face of it that the vast majority of Hibs fans were glad to see the back of a season where we reached the League cup final and the Scottish cup semi finals. But it is surely indicative of two things, the first being that practically nobody could get excited by the turgid football we were playing and the fact that nobody is willing any more to be anything but ultra critical of the fact that Hearts were able to put yet another notch in the bedpost of beating us in a big game. Folk were already so fed up of that particular stat that many of them couldn't even bear to turn up because they were sure it would happen again, as it did.
As for next season. If the unknown gets your juices flowing then looking forward to the coming slog is for you, because there are so many of them its hard to pick a favourite:
Will the new managers philosophy of it's better to win two and lose one than to win one and draw two work out positively? ... FWIW a philosophy I absolutely agree with.
Will at least two or three of the seemingly endless pile of kids we have signed turn out to be inspired signings, or will the lot of them be rabbits caught in the headlights? If it's the former what a season we could have with an energetic physical team playing high octane football, if its the latter it could be a potential car crash.
Will David Marshall be our version of Craig Gordon? Its certainly possible, but not all keepers past the age of 35 have Indian Summers like Gordon has.
McGeady ...... Will he be .... Brilliant? ... Average? ...Pish and / or always injured? ....... Possibly the biggest unknown of all.
And before the league season even starts, will Hibs push the boat out and acquire at least two, hopefully three, players in their mid 20s who have proven quality at a decent level? ... ideally a centre half, a midfield player and a striker .... if we sign any more players in the 'promising' and 'twilight of his career' category how long until the budget is blown and the fee / wages required to sign such players is out of our reach, if it isn't already.
Fun times :greengrin

I’m just really excited about all the new signings that seem like they’ve got a swagger and a point to prove.
Tavares, Kenneh, Youan, Melkersen, Miller etc are coming here to prove a point and essentially use us as a stepping stone to go to a better club/league.
That hunger they’ll have to succeed can only be good for us.

I've been on a right downer with hibs, but I must admit we certainly have better attacking options now and with all the new signings there's a sense of things changing, hopefully we can add a couple more and really have a go this season, it is going to be a hell of a lot better that's for sure. Mon the Lee Johnson and mon the hibs.

Scotland's played matches in June every year since 2015, with the exception of 2020 for obvious reasons.
On the new season, I can't say I'm quite buzzing yet as I still think we're about 4 players short of where we need to be, although I do recognise that we are still five weeks away from the league starting again.
I am looking forward to seeing our new signings, whilst still acknowledging that there are a lot of unknowns about them with the exception of McGeady and Marshall.
Hopefully we can get off to a good start in the League Cup as progression from our group is absolutely crucial.

I must confess to also being a bit weary at the length of last season. I follow Scotland and it doesn’t feel like enough time between seasons.
I am really looking forward to next season though, and I really like the cut of Johnson’s jib. There’s something of the exotic and unknown about next season, which always appeals. This recruitment business might be a massive gamble but at least it’s compelling.
Mowbray’s team were primarily young, energetic and making their way in the game so I don’t have an issue with a side brimming with youth, as long as they’re good enough. I’ve also felt we’ve lacked pace and energy over the past few years and it will be good to see that addressed.
Some concerns still remain, but we have time remaining to address those concerns.
We’ve also got a few players coming back from injury who we haven’t really seen much from yet - but we’ve seen enough to know that I’d like to see a lot more (Mitchell, Magennis).
