Anybody else watched The Lost Final on BBC Scotland presented by Pat Nevin? It’s about the Scotland under 18s who won the European Championship in 1982. Really worth a watch

Bought this on Audible.

Pat reads it himself, which for me added to the experience.
It’s brilliant.

Same squad then got to the quarter final of World Cup for their age group after that.

And around half a dozen were in the Scotland squad for the 92 Euros. Some very good players there

Robin Rae and Brian Rice from Hibs.
I remember Ally Dick from a live England v Scotland game on TV maybe a year or two later Think we won 5-4 or 4-3
There was also another guy attached to Hibs who was supposed to be the next big thing.
Never happened obviously, can’t even remember his name.

Scotland beat South Korea, got beat by the Aussies, then beat the hosts Mexico to then get beat by Poland in the quarters.

Closest we got to that teams achievement was in 2006. Think at least four of that team played for Scotland full international team.

I take it the programme is worth a watch.I enjoyed it, delighted they managed to finally see a few seconds of their goals. Only downside is medals Mackay is on it and he scores 🤣

Worth watching. Fairly short.

Amazing that they were missing key players from Aberdeen , Rangers and Celtic

Have to admit that “medals” goal was pretty good Some very good players

Celtic? Thought they said it was the Cup Finalist players who were missing ie just Aberdeen and The Huns?
Good players too. Black, Cooper and Gunn from Aberdeen would have been starters. Can't remember the Hun players. My brain is programmed to the "disinterest" setting when ever I hear the word Rangers.
Spoiler Alert..........The cynic in me asks did someone of Pat Nevin's intelligence really not think about contacting Czech TV for footage of the final until it was a late and last resort? Set up methinks. VG watch though.

Just watched that; thought it was magic! Pity the goal they showed Brian Rice scoring was against Hibs, rather than for us (such as the screamer at Tannadice in the 3-3 draw) 😆

That’s the guy I was thinking about, thanks for that. I remember he had a very big reputation but it just never happened.
Didn’t he play a few times for Hibs first team ?

Pretty sure it was Stuart Rae from Musselburgh.

Found the game I was originally thinking about
It was a schools international at Wembley shown live on tv in 1980
We won 5-4
Scotland included Paul McStay, John Robertson , Stuart Rae and Ally Dick
Rae played a couple of games for us on the pre season Highland tour, aged 16.
His career fizzled out and he emigrated to South Africa

Two Celtic players missed the final due to injury and suspension. Meaning only McStay played in the final while Hibs, Hearts and DU had two players each. Hearts had a sub too.

McStay was for me the standout player. Recall him as a Scottish schoolboy too Always thought he should move to the continent and develop him game in an easier environment.

Pretty sure it was Stuart Rae from Musselburgh.

Played the same age group as Paul McStay - was viewed as Edinburgh’s next big thing and just as good - never happened for him - was a real talent though …just shows the fine margins around football success as a pro …
