View Full Version : Top Five Home Tops

Following the big reveal today and mixed comments, I thought (John Cusack style in High Fidelity) I'd go with my top 5 Hibs home tops in my lifetime. My first ever top was the umbro top in 1981-83 but while it retains a special place in my heart, it doesn't make the top 5.

1. 1988-89 Adidas with the old circular crown badge worn by Collins, Archibald, Kane et al. Best top for me and still looks amazing. I'd love a well looked after original of this.

2. 1989-91 Adidas with planet saturn badge. Great top brought down slighlty by the badge. I have managed to get a player's edition of this in the long sleeve and its my go to top. Love it.

3. 1983-84 Umbro. Classic top in a beautiful shade of green. Was never off my back as a kid and used to have a stain regularly on the neck-line from me dribbling the milk from my cereal on it.

4. 1985-86 Umbro insave top. Another classic from childhood. Bands were all the range and I remember the Scotland shorts with the band from the same year.

5. 2015-16 Nike top. Cup winning top. Nice use of dark green but definitely influenced by the team and cup win.

Honourable mentions: 2013-14 Nike top - despite relegation and the rank team this was one of my favourite tops of recent years. Nice and simple and beautiful shade of green. Would have been a classic with a white collar. The 2000-2001 top would have made the list too but it was made of horrendous material. Also got to mention the 1991 Skol Cup winning top but I just don't think its as nice as its two adidas predecessors.

I definitely prefer the simple kits and probably have a bias to the kits of my childhood. I'd love to see us with Adidas again. I've never loved the LQS, Puma or Macron tops in the same way.

Worse top - 2018-19 Macron with the zig zag dark to light green. Just pick a green and run with it!

Have you forgotten about the Nike bottle green effort in 2014-15 with the naff Marathon Bet logo? That was horrible.

At least the 2018-19 top actually looked like a Hibs shirt although like you I wasn't a fan of the different coloured zig zags.

Personally I've always preferred the classic emerald green with round collar that I have in my avatar.

In agreement that Adidas and Umbro have made our best kits. Though I would have 91/92 skol cup as number 1.:greengrin

Nike gave us 2 great kits ( 2016 and 2017) but also one of our worst (2015) Bukta, Mitre and Puma were all pretty dreadful overall. LQS were a mixed bag, Macron likewise. Last seasons Joma ones were great, not keen so far this year.

I know it's sacrilege to say but I agree with you about the Skol Cup winning kit. I always think it's a bit overrated and we had better efforts by Adidas. I think the lack of sponsor is a big plus for a lot of people and also the huge amount of emotion tied up in it. Winning a cup on the back off the takeover attempt was always going to see it looked on favourably.

The white shoulders and white socks that were often worn with it are 2 of my pet hates in a Hibs kit so I've never shared the same love for it some do. It's a nice enough top but we have had much better.

The only redeeming feature of that shirt was the colour.

It was more expensive and had that awful sponser that peeled off after one wash. And we got relegated in it.

2 16 Scottish Cup Win
3 2007 Bottle Green away/third kit
4 2021/22
5 6-2 Top, must have been one of the heaviest football tops ever made

The “Paco Luna Purple kit” as I refer to it as, from the 2001/02 season ? Still holds a wee place in my heart.

Just came across this prototype for an Ireland Strip. Would have been a classic and a bit like ours from 88/89.

6-2 Le Coq Sportif. I still wear it.
Puma bottle green.

My favourites of modern times, both superb, but nothing will touch the early seventies bottle green. That is perfect Hibs.

Never a doubt best strip in our history should be that every year only difference would be our badge.
