View Full Version : Congrats Martin Boyle
Going to the World Cup!!!! Came along way in the game, frightening to think Scotland allowed him to go and play for another nation.
Aus fan for as long as they're in it.

I’ll never understand why mcleish never called him up.
Tried for a friendly I’m sure but never tried again, the rest his history.
Unforgivable really.

He spoke to him (or his agent ) and told Boyle he had no plans to select him

Thats what I recall, the balloon pretty much told Boyle he wasn't good enough for Scotland. Glad the a@@@@@le is away from management.

Wonder if we had an add on if he made it to the World Cup finals.

He wasn’t at the time. Regrettably he’s now unable to make our squads as would be a good option to have!
Well done Martin, huge achievement!

Jackson Irvine and Jamie McLaren will be going to a World Cup too.
Good luck to them all.

My recollection is that he was good enough by that point and that was being recognised - if he hadn't been good enough there wouldn't have even been a discussion about it between Boyle and McLeish.

Absolutely ! Couldn't rule out the possibility of Cummings making the squad either . Back to league business for Boyle now though. I see his club are in dangerous relegation territory with only two games remaining. very tight with a number of clubs though.

Boyler is immensely popular down here, and is one of the first names on the teamsheet.
He has come from humble football beginnings and by sheer hard work has proved himself worthy of playing on football’s biggest stage.
Got no doubt he would have been an asset for Scotland, but also think that being involved on the international stage with Oz has made him a better player.
He certainly seems to enjoy being part of the Socceroos.

Agree with all of that especially that playing international football for Australia has made Martin a better player.
Saw this photo on the Australia Peru thread superb

There was a follow up post where it showed he was literally in full kit, shin pads and all. What a guy.

Playing for Oz gave him the exposure that resulted in his big money move, gave him footballing experience all over Asia and now he can look forward to a World Cup.
Being involved at international level has also made him a better player.
Hope he comes home to Easter Road when his grand adventure is over, but sometimes I wonder if he might end up in the A League.
Financially, it might suit him.

Who was in the squad ahead of him that season for Scotland, he had been in good form, not full form Boyle but started to show his greatness, we've always been crying out for speed, he had added much more than that to his game by then. He deserved atleast a friendly to show what he can do, as by the sounds of it at the time. If Scotland were open to giving him a chance and giving him minutes then he was going to choose us.
Big loss for Scotland like, he can make something out of nothing, on the plus side we swapped him for Alex Harris with Dundee and it ended up permanent, one just made us a few million and did amazing for us over a good period of time, improving every single season and the one we swapped him for Is now playing part time lowland league football and working for Aegon or some firm like them and working in Finance.
Although tbf, I did think Harris was going to be class but he looked scared to run past a man after his injury, I heard a lot of rstuff said he doesnt have the same hunger and desure due to wealthy family and went to some good school or some pish. I mean maybe he knew he always had that to fall back on but its not like its ****ing boxing or MMA where your risking yourself alot more every time you step in the ring so I'm not sure thats true, plus there have been good boxers worldwide who have already been pretty wealthy or intelligent and didn't need to box.
Will still remember him fondly for when he came on and tore I think Falkirk or Kilmarnocks defence to shreds and scored that screamer in the game we were about 3-0 down at one point.
But aye Boyle in the Scotland squad right now would definitely make a difference for us in a good way sadly.

Harris went to Edinburgh Academy, Harris took a really bad injury and ended up out for an entire season right when he was starting to become a regular first team player. Also seem to recall Terry Butcher singling him out for a lot of criticism that just destroyed his confidence. Don't think it was a question of desire, just think Hibs wasn't the right place for him at that time as he went on to play professionally for a number of years afterwards.
It was Falkirk he ripped apart in the 2013 Scottish Cup Semi at Hampden, 3-0 down at Half Time and looking like we were well beaten at that time, pretty sure half the fans in the Hibs end departed at 3-0. Went on to win 4-3 in Extra Time and probably could have won it in the 90. Griffiths scored 2 and Eoin Doyle contributed the other.

Not to mention that LG missed a penalty and if IIRC he had one disallowed wrongly for offside?

Now that you mention it, that does ring a bell actually.
Leigh missed the Pen at 3-1 down, but probably would have scored the rebound had Doyle not tried to pick it up instead.
Can't find footage of disallowed goal

I think we underestimate how easy it is to stall a promising player's development. Poor management, bad injuries when they should be breaking through. Harris, Handling, Sam Stanton, Fraser Murray, Jordan Forster all started well and got a long term injury. What would Shaw have been like if his goal against Hearts was given? How does that affect him mentally etc?
