Stevie mallan looks like he is coming back to Scotland, who else thinks he could be useful as a squad player

Dundee United or killie bound I’d predict

Linked with the Buddies I think. We could certainly have done with him last season

Can we bring him in as an NFL style kicker?
Bring him on for corners and free kicks then replace him with someone who can actually move for the rest of the game.

He doesn't want to be a squad player he wants to be a first team regular that's why he left was it not.

Good goalscorer from midfield but little else. Won't be a better side than Hibs he goes to.

If his wokrate was higher take him back in a heartbeat.

I don’t think his work rate is in doubt, but his ability to win the ball back.

I thought he admitted that himself about his workrate.. A Midfielder doesn't always have to be a ball winner.

We aren’t that great a side currently

Seems he’s been out injured with a Lumbar Vertebra Fracture - hopefully nothing too serious but hasn’t played 90 mins since December.

Can't run, can't dribble, can't tackle.
Has great technique for hitting long shots and 40 yard diagonals, but we should be aiming higher

That doesn't make Mallan good, though. If he joins a side that finish above us I'll be stunned. Good shot, poor otherwise.
Newell is significantly better.

so does that mean we need someone that can hit even longer shots and 50 yard diagonals :na na:

Always amazes me how many people would rather have a midfielder that runs about a lot and "gets stuck in" (but rarely scores or creates goals) over a guy who can actually help the team score. Sums up Scottish mentality I suppose.
Mallan's highlights from his time at Hibs are unbelievable:

Interested to see how he gets on wherever he ends up.

The boy scores out of nothing, something we could have done with last season.

A screamer every 5 or 6 games makes an amazing highlight reel but when you're not contributing anything else to the midfield then its to the detriment of the team.
The balance of our midfield was pretty poor that whole season.
I always thought he was made a scapegoat at that time. He was played too deep IMO. Not been too many players that have got me more excited when picking the ball up within 30 odd yards of goal.

Yes, highlights so good you think he'd be at Barcelona. Except he's not, because the rest of his game is very poor.
People want quality footballers. Some of the very best midfielders ever rarely scored or created but they controlled football matches. Mallan never did that.

Yes he had his weaknesses but It's also quite funny that people make out that apart from scoring he just stood about doing absolutely nothing. There was a wee bit more to his game than that, including some excellent assists.

There is a time and place for all different types of footballers. I'd much rather have had Mallan on the pitch when we were one nil down v St Johnstone in the Scottish cup final than Joe Newell. ( and vice versa if we were one nil up).

This. The "screamers" had all dried up by the time he'd left. Probably because we don't play the pub teams every week that he tends to stand out against

Guaranteed he's scoring a screamer against us if he is moving back to Scotland as well.

Definitely. :greengrin
Decent player who was played far too deep by Ross and was also carrying an injury for a while, says a lot that when he left we struggled big time to create anything of note most games from the midfield, we had the 3 amigos all doing and playing the same way.

Ross played him far further up the park than Lennon and Hecky did. He still didn't play well. We absolutely did not suddenly lose all creativity when he left. He was hardly playing any games at all before he left. We lost a lot of creativity when Scott Allan, our actual quality creative player got a major heart defect and missed months. We still finished 3rd without both.

I agree to an extent, but his all round game is levels below Newell, and our managers seen that. Funny you mention St Johnstone, one of Mallans last games a 2-2 draw with them when he was absolutely dreadful and was hooked.
Its a proper Scott Allan replacement we need, if we are going to play with an attacking midfielder. Not Stevie Mallan.

For me, Mallan was always a liability when we were defending. Players breezed by him, probably why he found himself on the bench quite a bit.
Also on your comparison with Newell...different player for me. A better comparison would be "would you rather have Allan or Mallan?" If we were relying on Mallan to sit in and offer cover to the defence we would be in major trouble most weeks.

Bought a couch shortly before he moved to us, and him and his agent threw a wobbler trying to get hibs to pay for either a new couch, or to transport his old one up the road.

If we don't have a statue for a goalie, he won't. If we sign oxley again - probably

Newell is better in several aspects agreed, - I've said before I think a blend of the 2 players would be ideal:greengrin
In that 2-2 St Johnstone game he wasnt hooked by the way, so the manager didnt think he was dreadful as you.
I'm not suggesting he should come back to us btw!

Somebody else compared Mallan and Newell first, hence my point about them both having different qualities.
