I’m not his biggest fan and that was nonsense but he made a prediction that was wrong, it’s no that big a deal and he’s since held his hands up and admitted he had a howler there. I’m sure we’ve all got it wrong some times, just so happens his opinions are out there on record to be mocked forever more.
FWIW I had a bigger issue with him when on the eve of the season starting again after covid, they did a 45 minute podcast building up to the new season. Within that podcast they spent about 15 minutes discussing coaches and players needing to watch their language as everybody would hear them swearing, he genuinely seemed to think that was a concern worthy of discussion. With football about to return after a big lay off they should have been harnessing everybody’s excitement, instead we had next to no useful previews of either side.

Celtic fans have said to me that if they had signed SJM they would have got 10 in a row. Tom English should have listened to Chic Young on the subject of SJM Chic got it spot on.

It's wrong on a number of levels. Anyone with a clue of the sport sees that mcginn improves that celtic team. By the end of his time with us he was already a few levels up and strolling every game. Its also showing the usual arrogance about how good the old firm are. Thirdly it was derisory and proved so with how much we got. We have the right to ask for a fair amount, not capitulated to the old firms demands.
The man doesn't know much about football and proves it weekly

As a rugby fan I resent this new name for him. He knows as little about rugby as he does football!!

I hadn't seen that before, Thanks! English encapsulated in one sentence. His arrogance is only matched by his ignorance!

Decrying the lack of action over sectarianism…you’d be well served to report and highlight it every time you hear it, Thomas, rather than subserviently popping your fingers in your ear like a good little boy. Fud.

They probably would have done.

Was going to post exactly this!
Thing I don't get is he's being blind to the fact he bossed Ntcham every time we played Celtic that season. Scored those screamers at Celtic Park & Ibrox and had numerous MOTM displays. Was clearly going to move to a higher level. Typical Old Firm entitlement coming to the fore.

He knows little about Scottish football and is not an interesting voice. Surprised -even in the age of print media irrelevance- that broadsheets give him space. The Record is his level.

Did he not make a similar comment about Virgil Van Dijk as well?
Sure he called him vastly overrated or similar.

He's a pompous windbag who tries very hard to sound as if he knows what he's talking about. Makes a very good living out of football and rugby without really knowing much about either. I suppose that in itself is a skill of sorts.

Pretty sure he was also responsible for a story in the Scotsmen about Craig Whyte's wealth being off the radar (I suppose though there was some literal truth in that).

Another weapon who begins every sentence with "Listen". Incessantly seeks to sensationalise and create a story out of nothing. Arrogant and constantly attacking Hibs. Doesn't let facts get in the way of his narcissistic pursuit of controversy and attention.
Apart from that he's alright.

Gave up a long time ago reading any of his articles and the radio/tv gets switched off or over as soon as he comes on. What the BBC see in him is beyond me. Absolute R Sole.

I don't understand how an ill informed journalist can come over the Irish sea and start lecturing us about our own game without any prior knowledge or standing in the sport.

I totally gave up on the idiot when he stated there were only 2 outcomes from the relegation of Hearts. Either they would be re-instated or walk away with a shedload of compensation. I remember vividly when he said if as I had to stop the car to have a bit of a shout at the radio. I have never once heard him acknowledge what a lot of pony that was. This was around the same time that the BBC were giving air time to that other clown and legal expert Leslie Deans. A low point for Sportsound and that is saying something.

So so far on this thread this guy is an arrogant ignorant R Sole; a fud who is blind to facts; a bit of a tit who knows little about football or rugby; is a pompous windbag with an uninteresting voice who tries hard to sound like he knows what he is talking about; a weapon who sensationalises something out of nothing esp if it is anti-Hibs; is a narcissistic attention-seeking ill-informed clown.
Anything else?
Admins, maybe we can merge this thread with the "Who is Ton Englisher" thread but under a heading that tries to ensure we don't get yet another thread on this eejit.

It's beyond me that we have to suffer him.

Ditto used to enjoy listening to it however the pro Hearts agenda when they got relegated had no balance or context and was an insult to the intelligence of the listener though I really enjoyed when Donald Findlay handed both his and Levein asses to them on a plate on the show. Was brilliant to hear that.

Leslie Deans - the only man who made more of a prat of himself than Tom English during the whole relegation saga.

Stopped listening a few seasons ago - mainly because of him. Loves himself and thinks he’s the respected intellect on that joke of a programme. Absolute slavering t0sser, just incredible he gets air time. Has Gordon left yet.? - the other reason I stopped wasting my time listening.

There was a sad wee soul who assured the masses on sickbag that all would be well because Les was on the case. Hilarious reading at the time.

Never listen to a conveyancing solicitor when it comes to litigation. You wouldn’t go to Donald Finlay to buy a house. Sickbag and BBC fawning over wee Leslie 😂

Off topic but I remember watching some skinny teenage lad from Dunblane getting pumped out in the early rounds at Wimbledon one year, John McEnroe was giving it the full 'forget Tim Henman, this kid is the real deal', even though he was loosing. His co-commentator (think it was Jeremy Bates) was having none of it.....'he won't achieve half of what Tim has, can't say that about a national hero' (not actual quotes, I'm paraphrasing).....two of them were properly arguing over the commentary.
Same kind of parochial thinking in a way, lad from Scotland will never be that good a player, lad playing for Hibs can't be that good to walk into an OF team.
I do wonder if English wasn't right in a way though. Villa saw the talent, gave him his chance and played him. If he'd gone to Celtic would he just have been viewed as a bargain basement squad filler who would be lucky to get off the bench 5 or 6 times a season? The OF look down on us from such a lofty tower, do we actually buy into that narrative ourselves?
That barney between McEnroe and Bates stuck in my head for some reason. This awkward kid was playing some sensational tennis but was being let down by just basic inexperience, you didn't need to be an expert to see the potential.....but I never truly believed what McEnroe was saying, Grand Slam champions don't come from Scotland.....so come on Tim, your our only hope.

Saughton Jambo I think it was.
All sorts of claims of wee Les has it in the bag, millions to be paid in compensation etc.
Wonder if he and Les are still great buddies.

Remember they brought David Winnie into the argument? Apparently him saying there was a 50/50 chance of them winning the case was the absolute proof they needed they were about to get £10m compensation.
David. Winnie.

So many weirdos on that site.

In no way possible was English right. If he has gone to Celtic he would have quickly established himself as first name on the team sheet. He is the chief sports writer for the BBC here in Scotland but is happy to run the game down and tout our best players off for paltry sums. He isn't interested in the game here just the sound of his own voice. A selfish rent a gob.

Hmm nah. Celtic bought Brown from us and he became one of their greatest players of the modern era. McGinn is too good, he would have been in that Celtic team no problem.

Listening to the Open Golf coverage on 5live which is littered with knowledgable golf broadcasters and ex pro’s.
Jack of all trades and font of knowledge on all sports Tom English has joined the team for an hour or so to probably bore us to tears. Glad it’s lunchtime.
