Yeah saw that earlier whilst supping my McEwan's 80/- which I think is brewed there? If that is the case, here's hoping it survives the Belhaven treatment!!!

Think the cans and bottles are brewed in the south of England now. Draught at Caley.

A bit of an inevitability about this news, sad though it is. I pass the remnants of the old Dryborough Brewery everyday, likewise the site of the old brewery at St Leonards. It wasn't that long ago brewing at Fountainbridge and Holyrood wad still in full flow. I suppose times change but you would never know now that Edinburgh was once a centre of the brewing industry.

Yeh I think the McEwans brands moved to the Caley after Fountainpark closed but the jewel in the Caley crown is Deuchar's IPA. They also turn out a strong range of other craft beers.

You are correct, the bottled and canned beers are brewed in Bedford following the subsequent sell offs to Well's & Young brewery and latterly Marston's. The draught, such as was left from the S&N days, continued from the Caley brewery.

As someone who started beer drinking in the 70's and enjoyed the delights of McEwan's 80/-, Youngers IPA, No 3 etc. it's a sad day that the future of draught McEwan's could be at risk and might now disappear from bars. Watching a game at Easter Road without an 80/- Oh no!!! :greengrin:greengrin

Sadly always going to happen. Don't buy a lot of the owner's excuses for pulling out. Land value there will be collosal and a big reason for them leaving.

When Scottish Courage sold their land at Fountain Brewery ~15 years ago they made a fortune. Yuppie flats big business in Central Edinburgh especially beside the canal :agree:

Another friend gone but we desperately need more unaffordable accommodation near the city centre.😒

We definitely do need more housing. Lots more. Price will never come down unless we start building.

Heineken have invested hugely in pubs over the last few years, buying Punch Taverns prior to Covid. Lockdown must have hit them hard. As you say I suspect the land value will have swung the decision though there is truth in the claim that the Caley is too antiquated for modern-day production .

My mum's brothers had over 350 years between them working in breweries in Edinburgh. Given most of the old school printers/publishers are also shut down that's two traditional working class industries in the City vanished.
