Quote in match day programme from Alex Young general secretary of the supporters association-
“The members of my association have always deplored the barracking of our players at Easter Road. …. It is regrettable that our players should be treated this way at Easter Road.

Taken from the programme against Munich Bayern on 22/9/1958. Some things never change 😁

'The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers.'

The language may give it away slightly but you would be forgiven for thinking the above was written about 'youngsters these days with their iphones and lack of respect'. It was in fact written by Socrates sometime before 400BC:greengrin

'Things were better than our day' is an attitude that has persisted for, as the above shows, quite literally millennia. Twitter and forums might stoke the fires somewhat but abusing football players, managers, opposition fans and whoever else was in the vicinity has gone on for decades. It's not a new thing and it's probably not all that much worse than it ever was. The advent of the smartphone probably just means it's a lot more visible than it once was. A throwaway comment at 4.45 on a Saturday is now filmed, posted on line and condemned for weeks afterwards. Look at the thread on the 1972 Scottish Cup final with tales of battles in the streets and bottles being hurled at each other. If that happened now there would be hundreds of hours of footage posted online and national outrage. Did it even make the news back then?

He made a career ending mistake by not passing the hemlock.
