Wonder if they will show the famous throwing bananas at him. I believe the shops around gorgie that day sold out of bananas . Pretty sure they got off lightly with these disgraceful scenes .

Throwing 1 banana as he took a corner although there were many more, Archie McPherson, made comment about it after the game

Way before my time, but know the story of Mark Walters first games at rangers well from the Give Racism the Red Card campaigns at school. I remember being a young laddie going to one of the events and hearing the story of the game at Tynecastle from Medals Mackay, he looked genuinely upset by the memory of it.

That the same Mackay who went on to racially abuse Kevin Harper in the 90s?

The very same, I reckon that’s why he was there and went on to become an ambassador for Show Racism the Red Card. Remember as well talking about the casual sectarianism he grew up with and how it affected his outlook at a young age. Something along the lines of his granny/mum or whatever would give him 50p per goal or whatever when he played for the school team, but £1 per goal against a catholic school. This was years ago mind but I’m fairly sure he said he married a catholic years later and his bairns were raised RC despite that [emoji2371]

It was common for black players to receive that treatment up until the late 1980s, which seems hard to believe now. John Barnes and Luther Blisset definitely experienced it at Watford, as did Viv Anderson at his clubs. Anderson was famously booed by a section of the England support on his England debut; he was the first black player to play for England.

I remember Garth Crooks playing for Stoke against us in the 70s at ER to a background of monkey chants and racist abuse.

I laughed along but later remember feeling quite uncomfortable afterwards, it was quite a salutary experience and shows how widespread this sort of behaviour was back then.

Very interesting programme as well as being extremely embarrassing about the way racism was accepted by some. Well done Archie for calling it out after one of the games.

I managed to catch the documentary last night and was fully aware of his debut at Celtic Park but it was the first time I had seen the incident at Tynecastle. One young boy finger slicing his neck towards him, another doing the monkey dance lapped up by all around them. Really found it quite hard to watch. Dark as **** days.
