View Full Version : Hibee Strikers

Seems like we’ve gone the through this entire season without strikers.
Our two main guys have had a serious injury and have been off form when they’ve been able to play.
Its a miracle we had a chance of the top six.
A great team gets goals from all over the team but that hasn’t been us lately.
My question is who has been your favorite Hibs frontman you’ve seen and who would you like to see as our main striker?
(Try and keep it real)

Griffiths.

Imo he’s the best striker we’ve had at Hibs in my lifetime and by a considerable distance as well.

I'd have Cummings back in a heartbeat. Doing well in Oz though so can't see it.

Staying away from the obvious players, I thought Craig Brewster was a class act. Very, very underrated player.

Grant Holt. Not as naturally talented as the likes of Deek or Sparky but you could see his work ethic, the brute force and the ability he had even late on in his career. A proper team player and everything you want from a number 9 IMO.

I’d stick with Melkerson and actually put trust in him, some of his runs are so intelligent and he’s been unlucky to have such a midfield sorely lacking in creativity behind him

Riordan by some distance. Goals from absolutely nothing at times but was equally as good at getting on the end of great team moves.

Loved Jackson when I 1st started going and also really enjoyed watching Brewster in his short spell. Both very clever team players.

Deeks. To this day I still don't know if he was left or right footed. Brilliant on either side.

Neither did the FIFA games! He was right footed but they always had him as left.

There is every chance he was better. Griffiths had a much better goal per games rate at Hibs, despite playing in poorer Hibs teams.

But the Riordan/O’Connor partnership are my all time favourite.

They were both magnificent, but I think the heights Griffiths reached in his career backs up who the more talented player was. I think Riordan had better technique, but Griffiths had better power and pace.

Ally McLeod, Cowan and Durie, Deek, O'connor, Mixu, Keith, Jackson all quickly off the top of my head. Chris Killen would be great for us in this team I think.
I still think Nisbet and Melkerson will be a good combo next season

Gordon Durie had a season where he was fantastic. Craig Brewster the most under-rated and Grant Holt the most over-rated. Deeks and O'Connor as well as Fletcher were all clearly better than the league they played in but Keith Wright is probably my favourite since I started watching.

Not a striker but we could do with someone like Pat Goals McGinlay a box to box midfielder that chipped in with 79 goals from 374 appearances

So good we sold him to the Smellies for 525000k and bought him back the following season for 420000k when he was their top scorer and player of the year because Tommy Burns didnae fancy him

Who can forget his late runs into the box and his thumbs up to his wife Margaret in the West after every goal

Loved the Hibs

Wow! Could we not do with a Pat McGinlay type now?
Dynamic player and a strong influence on his team mates.

Magennis had a real bit of the McGinlays about him, I thought. Getting into the box and getting on the end of things as well as being a grafter. They also look a bit alike.

And what a difference Magennis made to our play.

On the striker theme though - Doidge looked the part in his last game before injury, with Murphy and Boyle out wide and Magennis in support from midfield.

I’m not convinced that Hibs have ever really done the lone striker thing well. Griffiths was good, Killen decent but other than that I’ve never thought it has ever suited us or the players we’ve had.

He was a very good footballer for someone with such a physical presence.

Anthony Stokes. If Riordan had the professionalism to match his ability he’d have been in the Premiership.

Stokes was the most frustrating of them all. Still the greatest game I’ve ever seen a striker play was that final. It is quite amazing how many of our strikers didn’t have as much sense as they had talent.

Mixu too. Funny how important a big, slow striker can be to a good team playing great football.

The £70K (I think) we spent on Mixu is up there with the best money we’ve ever spent - was that signing that transformed what was looking like a disastrous season in the First Division, and of course there was the small matter of a hat trick in the 6-2 game.

Didn’t appreciate how good he was until he signed for us, didn’t see what he had to offer at Utd or Aberdeen. Big character on the park as well.

Yepp, Griffiths in that second season was unplayable. Riordan had his moments of magic but Griffiths had real pace as well. There’s a brilliant compilation on YouTube of his goals from that season, and there’s another of Riordan sand while Deeks scored some belters I think Griffiths is consistently at a higher level.
