If anyone has any Hibs subbuteo teams, from any era, please get in touch. I've recently got back into "The Hobby" (subbuteo is called subbuteo because of the neo-Latin name for the European Hobby bird of prey, Falco Subbuteo) and am starting my own collection.

Aye I know mate but I've got a fair few of the custom/new teams from Top Spin, Zeugo etc. Looking for the original subbuteo stuff really, doesn't seem to be many going on eBay.

I have some HW Hibs teams and they hold their value better than some, mainly due to not being bought in the same numbers as your Celtics, Man Utd, Arsenal etc. Its a classic strip in a HW for those who have an interest in Subbuteo. Trying to buy a Hibs LW team and the prices are higher, too many collectors :greengrin

Just as an aside - but two Christmases ago, my wife got me the latest box set. God knows why.

So unpacked it to have a look - and the quality was absolute garbage compared to my youth (40 years ago). The pitch was some sort of terrible plasticy material that I'm sure wouldn't 'stick' to any surface. Not like the 'felt' type earlier models that would be Ok on a carpet and great on a piece of plywood.

Goals were awful as well.

I stuck my pitch to plywood. Great at first but the wood started to bend over time. At least it allowed me to play down the slope in 2nd half! Loved playing it as a kid. Hibs v brasil was a regular game for me.

As a huge Subbuteo fan from another age, I fully agree. The modern players are too lightweight, pre 1980’s had heavier bases. Modern pitches are synthetic crap, bobble and basically cheap.

IN the 80’s I had a 6ft x3ft snooker table....the perfect surface. My Mrs pointed out that we were wearing the carpet thin where we played. Epic nights, bongs, tea and we flicked to kick.

Used to love it as a kid in the 70s and 80s. There used to be a Subbuteo club at the Mansion house (Mr Boag's place) in Gracemount where we all used to get together for a match. Great times and much missed.

If you cant get Hibs buy a Leeds team. Back in the day I changed them from Leeds into Hibs with a tiny tin of green model paint and a matchstick ... with numbers on the back :greengrin

I had a mate with a whole room devoted to Subbuteo, he wasn't happy that all the players were the same size so he would melt down a player. For example in the Argentina team to make Diego Maradona.

Sorry to hear that mate, sad loss for you. I lost touch with Jim around 40 years ago just after he joined the RAF. Good memories with the Subbuteo though 👍

one day maybe...

Me and some pals (8 of us) used to have the Monday night league, home and away plus two cups, actually had presentation nights for trophies :greengrin. As the home team you had to provide sandwiches and drinks for halftime. I used Coventry as my team of choice i just loved their old blue strip with the two stripes running onto the shorts. Happy memories being involved in that back in the late 70's whilst still at primary school. Used to be a shop near the bottom of Leith walk that sold all kinds of subbuteo stuff. Floodlights, subs benches etc as well as teams. Remember buying the Brazil team because the strip was fantastic.

Got this year's Hibs kit from him and they're cracking, detail is different class.

Cheers mate, good to know :aok:

I remember you could even buy stands and stuff for round the pitch with plastic fans, looking at the semi final ticket sales how appropriate is that if one of the teams on your Subbuteo pitch is Hibs.

Always seemed to kneel on a player. So much so, half my Hibs team were torsos attached to the base with a bit of glue. Still always beat the Hearts though!

I had a team of Jimmy Johnstones too!

The cat used to invade the pitch and cuff the men all over the room.

Ply will always bend unless you stick a balance on the reverse.

That would likely be Morley's toy shop. I haunted that place for Corgi/Dinky/Subbuteo. Bought my first Hibs team there for 9/11.
