Sad news and amidst all the hall of fame chat probably a worthy. Always used to have time for a chat when skiving off to watch Hibs train at the likes of the JKC.
A big part of a great Hibernian side.
RIP Tam

Yep, he was an ever present in the black and white Evening News pull-out squad posters which used to hang on my bedroom wall (always yellowed by the light at the end of the season).

RIP TamAgreed. He was a lovely guy. I was with Pat Stanton recently and he spoke about Tam. Didn't realise he was physio as far back as the Real Madrid friendly. Pat said he got kicked across the ankle by Puskas and when he came back off the park Tam had a dressing ready to patch him up. Pat refused it as he wanted to show off the cut Puskas gave him.

RIP Tam

Tam had few peers in the game.
He was the best in his job ,bar none, at that time with Hibernian and the National team.
Served the best 3 managers i saw at the club.
Stein,Shankly and Turnbull.
Tam did not make last nights Hall of Fame awards.
I trust he will be included very very soon.

A True Hibernian.

Condolences to the McNiven family
RIP Tam McNiven.

“To this day, I would say Tam McNiven's methods, his dressings, his advice – they were lightyears ahead of anyone,”... John Blackley

Och- horrible news - a true Hibernian FC hero and legend - the angels high above will be looking after him now - his family should be so very proud of what he did for our great club - he was a star behind the scenes - we have been so lucky to have had him in our Hibees family 👍

Here's another memory I have.

If a Hibs player and an opposition player clashed in a tackle and both went down both teams "trainers" would run on to the pitch to attend to them.
You could bet your house on it that Tom would have finished treating the Hibs player by the time the other guy arrived. He was that fast!

Back in the day he was also into athletics and of course was a sprinter. Finally, if you go onto Third Lanark FC web pages, you will come across a pic of Third Lanark going on tour to America and there you see a very young Tom.

Would just like to express my sympathy to the McNiven family and my sorrow at the loss of a genuine Hibs legend.

I have two stand-out memories of Tam...

The first when I was about 10 or 11 and I was part of a group of young kids at the back of the old stand ahead of a game. Tam appeared and asked if one of us could nip to the grocers shop and get him a couple of apples. Keen as mustard, I jumped at the chance, fought my way to the front, took the ten bob he had given me, and ran all the way there and all the way back. He couldn't have been nicer and made me feel like I had played a big hand in the pre-match preparations! I think he even let me keep the change.

And, then, as an adult, I had a brilliant couple of hours with him when I interviewed him for the Erich Schaedler book, Shades.

He talked so passionately about Hibs, his methods as a trainer and physio, some of the characters at the club, and of course Erich - who was a keen student of fitness and the anatomy and who had a really special bond with Tam. It was a thrill and a pleasure to meet him and I know from all the other players from that era how highly regarded he was. A real visionary in his field and an absolute gentleman.

RIP Tam. You were one of our own.:flag:

As a youngster my memory of Tam was in a black or grey tracksuit and trademark white bunnet clutching his medicine bag -that contained the ‘magic sponge’ -patrolling the touchline

I was always taken aback at how fast he could sprint onto the pitch probably faster than Arthur

John Cummings at Hearts was another fast physio

I remember when I started playing football if you had a serious or bad injury Tam would be only too happy to take a look at it and give you advice to help you back on the long road to recovery

Sad news. It was a real privilege for Hibs to have Tam McNiven - Scotlands physio too and clearly the best around. A real big name in Scottish sport and even as a young supporter, I felt proud he was a big part of the Hibs squad.

I chatted with Jimmy O’Rourke in Asda a few years back and the subject of his knees came up and he said Tam added years to his career.

Reading Jimmy's medical history/notes from his time at the Club, hospital surgeon/consultants said the same as you quoted.
As did the club doctor/consultant at that time (whose name escapes me)
So not just Jimmy's word on the excellence and quality of Tam's abilities as a physio.

Edit:
The name i forgot.
Sir John Bruce, i think it was.
The eminent surgeon of his time.

Yes he was,Billy. It was his forename i was forgetting.
Jimmy's career could have been over before it really started.
A horrific leg break whe he was about 17 cost him at least two seasons out.
Sir John and Tam McNiven crucial in his recovery.
I will check with Jimmy, it may well have been Sir John who operated on his leg.
(Jimmy had 2 serious leg breaks while at Hibs)
Certainly Tam worked extremely hard an getting Jimmy "back on the pitch".
As he would have for many over his career.
Both men geniuses at their chosen craft.

So sad to hear of his death. I live near him and would chat to him when out walking my dogs. He was a true gentleman and was held in such esteem I always addressed him as Mr McNiven. When he was at Easter Road he always had time to chat to the fans in the supporters club. RIP Mr McNiven

Very sad to hear of this.

I was fortunate enough to play for the reserves for a year when Tam was the physio. New boots had caused a huge blister and he spent the same time on me as any first team player, coming up with a cushioned dressing which completely removed any pain. A gentleman, patient, kind and humble. I'm still convinced that players faked injuries just so they could take advantage of his football knowledge and experience. And of course the wonderful anecdotes.

His expertise went beyond football and he designed a massage table for treating cerebral palsy patients which prevented them rolling off during their treatment. Simple yet so effective. And a true reflection of the man he was.

Sincere condolences.
