Popped along to the new St James centre today to check it out and ended up exiting onto Multrees Walk. Youngsters popping out of Canada Goose, Harvey Nichols, Mulberry, LV etc carrying their bags rammed with stuff.
Anyway, has anyone ever bought trainers at £500+ or holdall's/bags at £800+, sweatshirts or hoodies at £300+ and is the quality worth it, will they last as long as you thought they did or is it mostly for the brand? At Harvey Nichols there was a plain hoody with some tiny brand logo on it for £800. Other than premier league players who the heck is paying that for a daft hoody!?

With certain things I don't mind paying a bit more to get good quality things, I have had a couple of Fjallraven jackets for a number of years that are excellent but were a bit pricey but I've more than had my money's worth out of them
Think I fall into the generation that got lucky in a way as when I was that age you could get Stone Island, Ralph Lauren and Boss clothes between £100-£200 depending on what you were getting and those lasted ages too
My nephew is 15 a bought a tracksuit that was about £250 odd which I wouldn't mind if it was was cool but it's absolutely horrendous and I wouldn't wear it even if it was a tenner
Suppose I'm just getting old but I'd never go over £100 for a pair of trainers which is easy for me as I only ever wear Adidas Originals
I was also up there for the first time last week too and the only shops that caught my interest were the Omega and Breitling shops

I'm amazed that a) anyone can afford that stuff, and b) anyone would spend that amount of money on that stuff even if they can afford it. It's actually a really boring place.

Have a pal who regularly shops in Harvey Nic's. If they didn't tell me where they had bought the item of clothing they were wearing, I would have guessed it was a High Street store purchase. No idea if the clothes last longer, but personally think people are paying for the brand name and maybe some sort of status that comes from buying high end goods. No for me, but each to their own.

I've often thought about buying a really nice watch but will never happen, not from a money standpoint but I'd wreck it within 2 weeks so isn't really worth it, the prices of them getting serviced are pretty eye watering too
I have a half decent Citizen watch that needed a crown and stem replacement, that was £17 but the service was a further £90 haha

There is no way the quality is worth the price for designer label clothing.

I was out at lunch walking the dog.
There was a laddie about 14 wearing a Moncler gilet with a Stone Island jumper beneath it. Stone Island trousers and Air Max 97s.
The lassie he was with had Balenciaga trainers on and an LV handbag.
Between the two of them they must have had about £1500 worth of clothes and £1000 worth of bags on and that’s keeping in mind I’ve no idea what else they were wearing.
£2500 on clothes and bags between two school kids in one go.
You see it everywhere you go now though. Either there’s loads of fakes going about or everyone is in masses of debt or selling drugs.

I like Barbour gear because it’s good quality and well worth the price. A £200 wax jacket will last a lifetime if it’s looked after and their other stuff is pretty reasonable. I do draw the line at things like £80 sweatshirts though. Jacket, shoes and jeans are about the only thing I feel like is worth paying extra for. And you can’t go wrong with good fitting t shirts.

I’ve never been on Depop so I’m not sure what things are going for there.
It does seem to have got out of control now though. One thing you can’t fake is cars and I even seem to see young guys and girls who can only be around 20/21 getting out of brand new Mercedes, BMWs and Audis. We used to have a call centre for the bank over the road from our office so most likely a lot of kids on minimum wage. Friday would see all these motors filled up with kids in high end designer clothes and Tag Heuer watches and they can only be coming out with about £1200 a month or so I’d think.
On the presumption they’re on a lease these people must be spending not a kick in the arse off about £700 a month on their cars and about £1000 per outfit.
The numbers don’t add up. Always annoyed me not being able to work out quite how they do it as I’d love to be able to make my wages stretch the way they seem to be able to :greengrin

You would be surprised. There are reasonably priced watches with sapphire crystals and ceramic bezels that you would find are hardier that you would expect. The build quality of brands like Rolex or Omega is excellent and they are designed to last a lifetime and be passed down to last another

There are some of the better 'homage' watches now that have these features previously thought of as only available on higher end. Saphire crystals, and ceramic bezels as you say, screw-down crowns, decent (Seiko etc.) automatic movements and exhibition backs. Most often solid steel cases and bracelets. People have different views about homages but in the main their value for money can't be denied. A good example is the Pagani Design brand made in China (with a solid Japanese movement). Their Rolex 'Hulk' homage can be picked up on eBay for around £80. It also has screw links and a sunburst finish dial.
A great place to check these value watches out is a YouTube channel run by Jody, a Scots guy in Australia, called 'Just One More Watch'. Jody loves a deal, amusing and entertaining videos too!

I blame social media. Everything is for show, paid by Klarna or credit cards etc etc.
The value of money has been lost to the generation below mine (and a lot of my gen too). They'll all moan about how difficult it is to get on the property ladder and then buy themselves Balenciaga trainers or holiday to Dubai twice a year for their insta account.
There is a huge mental health crisis arising because of it.

I'll happily pay a bit more for things I expect to last me for a long time. By that I mean suits, dress shirts, good dress shoes, ties, maybe some knitwear etc etc
For everyday fashion then I'm not convinced it is worth it. I'd argue that fashion usurped style when it comes to how people choose to dress some time ago and some basic things that used to be 2nd nature to most men are being slowly forgotten. That's a whole other argument though and one that ultimately leads to accusations of snobbery even though it is anything but.

Tags still have some great designs although some purists seem to turn their noses up at the ones with quartz movements.
I've worn a Swiss Oris pilot watch for over 20 years and it's still going strong. I love this brand and have always felt attached to it with the first watch I had bought for me as a kid being a slimline Oris. It got lost many years ago and I decided I wanted another Oris to replace it. My 'grail' watch as they say wouldn't actually be a Patek, Rolex or Audemars Piquet although they are obviously all fabulous but rather an Oris Aquis divers watch in a fetching shade of green.
Oris have a few quirky design features such as the big crowns on some models, derived from being used by US pilots wearing flying gloves. The red rotor visible in the movement is another individual feature. Also the pointer watches with the calendar on the outside of the dial.

To be fair I agree with all this post but the part about the property ladder is nowhere near fair imo. It’s nigh on impossible to buy anything on your own unless you inherit money, happen to be in an insanely highly paid job or are gifted a huge sum to help you out.
Someone on the average wage would be able to get a mortgage for around 115k. You’d need a huge deposit of about £50k to afford anything in Edinburgh. The housing market is a shambles. Every year that goes by makes it harder and harder to afford.
No amount of saving can really change that for a single person with nobody to help them out on an average wage for example. And that’s before the cost of everything else is considered. I honestly don’t know how a single person on an average wage can survive unless they just stay at home.
I also still don’t know how folk can afford Balenciaga gear either though :greengrin

I think the most I’ve ever spent on a single item of clothing was £250 on a pair of brown leather boots from Russell & Bromley. Bought them 2003 and they are still going strong (albeit I’ve re-heeled them a few times).

Royal Oak is stunning :aok:
Thing is, you just can't get them at retail these days. Check any Rolex boutique and they only have exhibition models on display. A few years ago you could buy some models at a discount.
Now, for Rolex, you could be waiting several years for the GMT or Submariner. Fancy a Daytona? No chance. If you were lucky enough to buy at retail today you could sell for 3x on the grey market tomorrow.
Last year Rolex launched the OP in Tiffany Blue. It retailed for around £4,800. If you can find one online now, you'd be paying > £25k!!
It's mental.
As for the Royal Oak, forget it at retail. They're trading for 6 figures pre owned now. Same with the Patek Nautilaus or Aguanaut.
If anyone owns a steel Rolex, go check the pre-owned market. You could be in for a nice surprise.

I like my clothes and my shoes. Will pay more for premium brands but they tend to be the smaller brands that do more unique ranges. Have bought jumpers from Harvey Nicks and you can tell the difference in quality but it still wears at the same rate as something less expensive. It’s the difference in the cut and fit I like in the more expensive brands. I like John Smedley for example.
Although 90% of the stuff you get in the likes of Mulltrees walk is just vanity. Crazy prices for something that looks the same as a cheaper brand except for the badge.

It's just a better class of debt, same with flash cars, nobody can actually afford these things unless you're born in to stupid money. I think the most I've spent on an item of clothing is around 50 quid? I can't justify spending any more on clothes. I bought a few primark tshirts a few years ago that fit me perfect and haven't fallen apart, think I spent about 20 quid. No branding on them, nice and plain and look great, I could tell people they were Versace but the game is given away when you're not a walking advertisment for whatever brand it is as that's what it is isn't it? designer clothes are always splashed with the name all over them and they look horrendous.

You've got your own shop

I'm in love with and seriously considering a Blue Milgaus. Not everyone's cuppa but I think it's stunning!!

I hate the whole fashion industry with a vengeance and see it as no better than organised religion where a small group of people dictate what everyone should or shouldn't be wearing. Just **** off with that bull****.
I buy my clothes with practicality in mind rather than any sense of fashion and usually try and find stuff that is casual and can be worn on the golf course or is multifunctional. I'm probably in the minority but when I see people wearing labelled designer clothing, I can't help but think they're compensating for one thing or another.

Good for you mate! Each to their own.
If I buy this watch it's as an investment and I'll be trading in a watch that was purchased for similar reasons.
I'm sure you like to buy nice golf clubs! Same but different.😉

Got a feeling that might be discontinued in the next couple of weeks. If you find a nice one, snap it up.
The price on the grey market will go the same way as the Explorer or Air King as soon as they stop producing it.

If you are looking for an incredible jacket then look no further than Frahm. I've got a couple of their pieces now and from my experience of a well traveled jacket coniseur you will not find a better made jacket anywhere else even at 5 times the price

I have that exact watch with the miyota movement and I love it. Also have a blue aquaracer homage for everyday wear and an omega meca quartz one.
Love Pagani design because you get so much for your cash and it's not really about pretending you own an expensive watch.
They're just really nice designs, and the specs are what you'd find on a fairly expensive traditional brand watch.
P.s. I also have one of their skeleton watches which is outrageously big but mesmerising, I could watch it all day.
I try and avoid brand names where I can because you are basically a walking advert. Also how many of those people who wear designer stuff because of the quality would still do so if it was unbranded?
Maybe it's my age but it's all about fit and looking well put together. I sometimes get grief for looking overdressed but I just reply that you can wear what you like but I'm a man in his forties, therefore I dress like one. I also point to the lack of branding on my chinos, sports jacket etc...and contrast it with their ADIDAS/LACOSTE logos shouting at you everywhere...who's really showing off?
What I really want to say is that you're still dressing like you were a teenager, but that would just be rude.

I have the same watch too but it has a Seiko NH35A movement in it. Brilliant watch, I really can't fault it and I wear it a lot. I think reviewers are often a little staggered as to how they can afford to have such a high spec at the price they are. I also bought the Pagani 'Daytona' homage and would say similar about it. It's a quartz movement but the watch gets a few comments.
I'm not against an outrageously sized watch or two and have a couple at 50mm!

For me dressing well isn't about showing off what brands you are wearing. It's about knowing how to out an outfit together, how to wear a suit properly, how to accessorise etc. I think it was Alexander McQueen who boasted he never spent more than £25 on a single item of clothing.
I get the same grief for appearing overdressed at times. And 'overdressed' is pushing it. Chinos, a shirt, jumper, blazer with a pocket square and scarf to a works night out was 'showing off' apparently. I dress how I like to dress and it makes me feel both comfortable and good about myself. Tbh I believe a lot of people who 'underdress' are every bit as contrived when doing so as those showing off their brands. It's certainly a thing in the business world with the cool, hip CEOs in their torn jeans and flannel shirts. It's as much a uniform and about image as a 3 piece suit that cost thousands.

I bought a Rolex 12 months ago, hated it, sold for £1000 more than I bought it for and now it’s on sale for £4000 more than I bought it for.
I’m a jealous…no. The watch was small and told the time. Much prefer my other ‘cheaper’ watches

Going off on a tangent here: It was only in the last 6 months or thereabouts (thanks to a Netflix docu series) that I became aware of how the notorious American murderer known as "The Zodiac Killer" got his name.
Previously, being only vaguely aware of the maniac, I'd always assumed it had something to do with Astrology, star signs etc
Imagine my surprise when I found out that he was named that because his 'signature' left at the crime scenes was the Brand Logo of Zodiac Watches 😳
So..... Any dot netters got a Zodiac?

Panerai are lovely but my wrists are 6" so they just don't work for me unfortunately.

I bought the Black Bay 58 just before lockdown. I do like it but being honest I don't love it as much as I thought I would. I think it had held its value or maybe gone up a bit in value, so I may sell it soon.
I have a Pagani GMT II master homage and find myself wearing that far more often - absolutely great value for money. I also bought a Cadisen President homage - again decent value for money for an automatic watch with a decent enough movement that looks far more expensive than it was.
An Orient Ray dive watch is probably my best buy - Orients are superb. And I've got a Seiko SKX 007, but put it on a green Uncle Seiko Waffle strap - absolutley love that watch, its definitely gone up in value since they discontinued them.

My dearest item was a Stone Island overcoat, was £1200 reduced to £900, bought many years ago and still looks as good now as the day I bought it, did spend £300 on a pair of shoes for 1-5 final and never wore them again after the game, could afford these items back then, also have a nice watch but never wear that.

I think those who underdress and criticise people who they consider overdressed do so because there is a great big mirror showing their insecurity. It takes bottle to start your style journey. I remember the first time I stepped outside the box was wearing a pair of coloured slim fit chinos with black Chelsea boots and I was terrified but now chinos are essential for adding colour. It's easier to tear other people down than to actually improve yourself.
Those who cling to brand names still have this juvenile herd mentality where it's all about seeking approval, and those who simply disregard physical appearance are missing a trick because like it or not we do live in a superficial world.
And like you say, feeling good about yourself and being comfortable is what it's all about, and that doesn't have to mean designer labels or trackie bottoms.

Your as much in the herd as them though, not that's a problem I'm sure you look dapper. They feel good about themselves with a name, as you say its a superficial world. Even goths, punks, gq style gurus all think they are being different from the norm but are wearing a uniform thousands others wear.

But what if people feel good about themselves wearing designer labels or trackie bottoms? You seem to be making out that you are in someway superior to these people because you choose coloured chinos and Chelsea boots and don't wear visible branding? ( Apologies if I've picked that up wrong, but thats how it reads to me:greengrin)
They are making an effort too, just not in the way you would choose to. They aren't disregarding physical appearance, actually they are all thinking about it quite a lot probably in a bid to ensure they are not judged harshly by their peers. If they were to pitch up on a night out in Chelsea boots then they'd get the pish ripped out of them, just like If you or I turned up in a pair of tracksuit bottoms. Nobody wants that :greengrin
Good points above (I can't multi quote) and I suppose I'm guilty of not seeing things from other people's perspective here.
However, if you look at the general population, you'll see a trend towards casual clothing and the vast majority dress this way. I think this goes hand in hand with seeing designer labels as desirable a sign of being well dressed, and those who prefer a more formal way of dressing stick out more and more. I suppose I can't have it both ways
Maybe just letting of a bit of steam because I stay in Fife, and the casualisation has been, erm, supercharged. Anything smarter r than track suits and Nike air Max 90 and you get pelters in some places.
