What is it with our throw ins taking forever!!

Sorry to bring it up again, but for years now I’ve noticed we take forever and a day to take a throw in.

There’s very little movement, players literally hiding from the ball.

It’s frustrating to watch it take so long to get the ball back in play while the opposition gets back into shape and any momentum we have is lost.

As you say it's been going on for years, seems to be the Hibs way, and we usually lose the ball.

Maybe we just notice it and fans of most clubs feel the same, but we have been complete ineffective at taking throw ins for as long as I can remember. Shouldn’t be hard to work on.

That is the biggest problem we have, lack of movement. No-one is running into space to try and give the player with the ball an option. At least Elias Melkerson tried to find space when he came on. Yes, Cadden on the right and Doig on the left are often in acres of space, but are often static when they receive the ball and by the time they have the ball under control they have one or two players in front of them.

I've argued for years that it's a set piece regardless of where you are on the pitch and training sessions should always include working on them in different areas of the pitch. Alex Young, me ex coach bless him, insisted they should always be worked on, same as corners and free kicks. It's how players learn movement, control, first touch.

Our slowness in getting the ball back into play just kills the game… most of the time we wait til the other team are back in position and then end up throwing the ball backwards and recycling the ball yet again!

Incredibly frustrating to see a player rush to get the ball only to see him get a shout from the full back to leave it…. NO!!! Just take or it and get the game going!!! FFS.

We are statistically the worst team for throw-ins and have been for a number of seasons.

I almost wish I’d started this thread before the AGM so someone who attended could’ve mentioned it!!

If you watch Lewis closely, he is constantly looking for the quick throw or getting the game going quickly as you say - sadly, players around him, aren't switched on enough or take the chance of a throw to get a breather - next time you watch Lewy, watch how infuriated he gets.

Watched the under 18 game on Friday and they were the same with the throw ins. Must be taught thru the ages .

i don't think i've ever seen a hibs team that was competent at throw ins, and i've been going to games since the 90s. very peculiar - like someone said, it might just be a confirmation bias on my part, but the movement always seems terrible.

Sometimes we’re in a great position for a quick throw in and rather than keep the momentum going we wait for the fullback to jog up to take the throw in. Once we’re happy the opposition have got back into position and have us covered we then proceed to take the throw in but every one just stands there then the ball is inevitably thrown up the line due to the lack of options and possession is handed over.

Should be a couple of pre-set movements for a really quick throw-in failing which, when that is clearly not on, it should be no different to a line-out in rugby i.e. you call a coded well-rehearsed move that involves the players nearest the thrower-in bamboozling their defenders with their co-ordinated movements. 15mins at training twice/week tops.

When was the last time we were good at throw ins?

Having an assigned thrower means there is a delay in the throw and everybody is marked up. First to the ball should take it.

There is little movement by our players at throw ins. We throw short and a quick back to the thrower who is marked. We need more movement away from the ball and longer throw ins.

Where can you find these stats?

Pretty diabolical and I am pretty sure our opposition teams know it too,our loss of the ball from throw ins is chronic.

A team like Liverpool has a coach dedicated to just that one thing. Obvs we don't have the resources for that, but they make up a large part of the game.

If you practice countering them as well, it's a good way to try and win back possession.
