View Full Version : Benefit of the doubt.
It is pretty clear to almost everyone that hibs are not in a good palace right now. Given our issues with player availability we do have to give our new manager the befit of any doubt. However, to my mind at least there is plenty to be doubtful about.
The 3-4-3 formation just doesn’t work for the players we have and even yesterday when we were really short and 4-4-2 looked the only option, we stuck with the 3-4-3 and played cadden and doig in the three which is just crazy
Cadden has been our most dangerous player since Boyle left albeit he does need to improve his cross ball.
Yesterday though the real issue was out front three. Doidge is a shadow of the player he was and carries no threat. Jasper flatters to deceive and has no end product. He often beats his man two or three times only to find he has actually got past the man and nothing has come of his trickery. He needs to learn to put a ball into dangerous areas or pass to his team mates. Henderson is an enigma who shows some nice touches but generally seems to avoid the ball and like jasper has no creative edge.
Campbell and wright get some stick but they are not our problem. Neither will they be starters when we get some players back
I thought when Allan and melkerson came on we suddenly had some attacking intent although Allan appeared to be lacking match sharpness and his passing was a little bit off. Maybe he should be given a bit more game time.
Overall though we seem to be less prone to conceding but also never look like scoring. There is a lot of work to be done and a big squad overhaul required

Mitchell, Mueller and Newell back will help that, as will Hanlon as its gives us option to free up Doig
For me Allan is so far off it at this level now. He will almost certainly be gone at the end of the season and I'd be shocked if he ends up in the top league

I want to see Melkersen and Hauge more as you can see their endeavour and willingness to take a risk. We need more of that.
Disagree with your assessment of Scott Allan, thought he was a country mile off the pace and was poor.
Maloney needs to play players in a way that will get the best out of them. If he wants to stick with Doidge then you can’t play him in the same way you’d play Nisbet. Cadden is at his best bombing down the wing and getting the ball into the box, not stuck at the back.
The manager strikes me as really, really stubborn. Either he learns a bit of pragmatism (and if he does I think he will do well) or he keeps banging his head off a brick wall. If he tries to stick with tactics that don’t suit the personnel he has available then he won’t see Christmas at the club IMO. I’m not saying that’s what I want to happen but what I think will happen.

I’m willing to give Maloney the benefit of the doubt, longer term, because I think he’s inherited most of our problems rather than created them. And he’s already spoken this week about only doing some of the things he’s been doing out of necessity rather than because he wants to.
Shorter term, he can’t just keep doing the same thing or we’re going to get the same results. He needs to make some changes in an attacking sense. The most obvious thing, with what we have available, being to play Melkerson between now and the end of the

I've only seen 5 minutes of highlights but in those 5 minutes I saw Jasper provide 2 excellent passes into the box for a teammate, the 2nd of which was preceded by a superb piece of skill. He also had 1 of our 3 shots on target. He's raw but he's also just about our only player capable of beating men and getting into dangerous areas. Let's support a young guy who could end up being a star for us.

Definitely looks like he will be a good player for us but its so frustrating when he beats a player then rather than crossing it or passing it he tries to beat the player again then it comes to nothing, needs to learn to play the easy ball sometimes but will be a good addition i think

The assessment of jasper is so wrong, as is that of Allan. Jasper was the only player creating anything, he’s only 20 and has a lot to learn to improve his game but he looks like an excellent footballer that could go for as he gets better. Allan is done, he can’t keep up with the pace of the game even when the other team are knackered.

When he had more players available and we were playing at a snails pace, ponderously passing the ball around the back and managing a few shots on goal he deserved criticism. He certainly got plenty from me! Right now he's basically trying to put square pegs in round holes. Our injury list is unprecedented so he gets the benefit of the doubt right now.

I think all Jasper really needs to do is look up more and pick a pass at times. Doesn't need much more than that really.
Excellent dribbler and can seemingly beat a man for fun. If he just passed instead of trying to beat the man again he'd be class.
Definitely good to watch though and as much as he frustrates me I can't help but applaud his efforts

Met a pal last night who I hadn't seen since covid started. He's met Josh Doig's Dad through his work. Said that Josh said all the players were really excited when Maloney first arrived. But now, er, they are not..
He (the Dad) also said Doig would be away in the summer (clauses in contract, still interest from various clubs).
Don't shoot the messenger - just passing on what I heard from what I think is a reliable source.

Do you think Henderson is mobile? Henderson is very good on the ball but he is one of the most languid players I've seen at Easter Road in a long time.
Allan is definitely quicker over 5 -10 yards.

Don’t believe the Maloney bit at all. Bumped in to a parent of a current first team player today and they said the complete opposite . Players are loving working for Maloney. They realise they are struggling to get goals, but his training , tactics and support of them is as good as his son has ever experienced ….said that they are sure they will improve results when some of the key players come back …

Languid doesn't necessarily mean slow, Allan quick over 5 to 10 yards bit of a stretch but then left behind like an old puffing Billy. I just feel his medical conditions are catching up with him which is a shame as in his prime he was tops.

Hopefully we will get a decent pay day when he does go, but he needs to up his game and get back to last season's level.

Not doubting your information, it's hearsay though, but what I would say is that since Maloney has come in Josh's form has improved markedly and he is back to the levels he was when he broke through. Far more disciplined defensively and is offering a lot going forward. Clauses are only worth mentioning or considering if the player is playing well and clubs meet the valuation which after hearing Ben Kensall's interview recently, I'm sure is large - so he needs to continue on his career trajectory and concentrate on Hibs before any of them get invoked :aok:

I don’t think Henderson is slow, I think his body shape (tall and lanky!), means he looks like he’s moving slowly but is actually covering a lot of ground with a long stride. I also think he’s good at moving off the ball to be available, so often doesn’t need to be in an all out sprint

I read a thread about him on a Celtic forum when he signed to get a feeling for their thoughts on him - a lot of people saying he had real ability but plenty of folk also citing his lack of pace/energy. It's early days but I'm in agreement with that consensus so far. As you point out McD that doesn't necessarily mean he can't be a good player at Hibs though.

I don't think he's an attacking player, far too many times he's calling for the ball in attacking positions where he's surrounded by players, I do think he has decent ability though...could he be the No.6 the team requires? he's willing to take the ball in tight places and his first thoughts are to turn and get it forward, could we play him along side JDH instead of Campbell and use say Melkerson off doidge? or we could play Allan and hope that consistent games get him up to speed

My pal is a Celtc supporter. I've no idea what Josh's dad is. They're not pals - he just met him through work, and was passing on the info to me as I'm a Hibs fan. I don't think there is any bitter, ulterior, motive involved.
