Clearly got a fantastic voice, felt a bit bad for her as she should have been on 5 minutes earlier so she could have at least got to finish Sunshine on Leith!

I thought Nessun Dorma at half time was a bit strange though if I'm honest - as good as she undoubtedly was at singing it.

Not a fan of SOL anyway, but her attempt did nothing for me and it's not a good choice of song to get the crowd fired up before a game. It works fine for celebrating a big win though.

Her "Nessun Dorma" at half time was much better and got a deserved round of applause.

Far from it . A Google search shows her singing in Moscow music hall with a major orchestra when still in her teens for some charity football event . Plus the Voice . Nothing personal on her as she was excellent singer

But was just strange right before a kick off, the feeling off we must entertain the fans at all costs is creeping in as the number one objective in what is meant to do that (the football) is currently failing

Opera singers and big screens won’t wash.

We want a winning team

Wasted ? Maybe for her and our club ( and maybe she`s a Hibby too ? ) .
Rob ( Ron ? )or son nor Ben maybe don`t need to learn . They`re not exactly new to sports marketing .
I hate all this commercial stuff but reality is that we need more income if we want to challenge more in sporting sense ( fans can then decide what they consider to be reasonable targets for a club in Scottish League ).

100%. The thought of someone being embarrassed at a lassie (with a ridiculously good and strong voice) singing is ridiculous.

I was foolish enough to think this might be one hibs-related thread with no moaning, digs, or negativity.. other than the understandable ones at the game itself of course.

I for one felt quite privileged to experience it. Never been to the opera/classical music and don’t suppose I ever will. But that was quality.

I'm not sure if anyone watched the documentary about the formation and development of the EPL that was on recently.

In it's infancy they chucked all sorts of stuff out there to see what stuck. They had cheerleaders, singers, inflatable sumo on the park at HT (yes, really) and a million other things. They basically looked to the NFL, MLB etc as inspiration. What actually worked was pretty simply though. Most importantly the football standard improved. The league went from being a decent league but some way behind the dominance of Serie A in the 90s to the place where the world's top players wanted to play. Obviously that level requires billions but the basic assertion that better football = more fans is pretty difficult to argue against. Secondly they reintroduced beer at the game and finally coupled that with better food. That was really all a lot of fans wanted. Good football, a beer and a decent bite to eat. All the other stuff was just noise and most of it faded away.

I've no issue with Hibs trying things to improve the 'match day experience' (and I ****ing hate that expression). Ultimately though the football is bad, beer is a pipe dream and I can't speak for elsewhere in the stadium but in the FF the food offering is as it was but with slightly worse service than before.

I think they got it wrong yesterday. The lady singing had a brilliant voice but Sunshine on Leith pre game in that way killed any atmosphere that was building stone dead. Whether I as an individual enjoyed it is irrelevant, it didn't contribute to getting a big crowd going. Surely yesterday was the day for introducing a few ex players. As an example Garry O'connor's boy was on the bench yesterday so get him out then bring out Derek Riordan because they go together then finally have a 'we have one cup winning captain in the dug out but why have 1 when you can have 2/3/4 please welcome Pat Stanton/Murdo McLeod/Rob Jones'. That would have raised the roof and got fans right up for it for the first few minutes at least.

There's nothing wrong with trying new things but I think you need to be honest about whether they worked or not. 'Stop criticising the club' doesn't really work as an argument if you are assessing whether yesterday's pre match entertainment achieved any of it's goals.

Folk saying a talented local kid singing on the pitch killed the atmosphere?

Yikes.

I met a mate after the game. I asked "How's you?"

His answer? "Bored!"

The atmosphere had nowt to do with Ciara Harvie.

That's quite some stretch.

It's the football product that gets bums off seats and crowds lively.

No one’s deny that one bit, and I don’t think any are being harsh on the singer at all but how can you build an atmosphere if there’s someone on the pitch singing and there song is belted above anything else you can hear?

What’s the point in a singing section when they’re competing against Barrie before and a singer as the teams emerge, as you say the product on the pitch was rubbish so the crowd has been left no opportunity to start chants between 2-3 and then again a singer at half time before another poor 45mins

For me the announcer and other pre match entertainment needs cut 10mins prior to kick off, songs like glory glory on and videos of big moments on the big screens no one shouting on mics and all that, teams come out it’s crowd noise get the line ups on the big screens for anyone that’s missed it give the fans an opportunity to into it….before no shots at goal kill us off at least

Fan of your posts PB, but I don’t quite agree here.

We had more than 90 mins to create an atmosphere and didn’t really ever get going save a brief spell when the subs came on.. clearly not helped by the football of course.

I was actually thinking that the rendition of sunshine on leith, immediately after the historic hibs clips on the screen got me going a bit and reminded me what it is to be hibs! A bit of emotion and then the players emerging at the end. I thought it was really good personally and certainly not a excuse for poor atmosphere.

There may be something in the idea of having this stuff a bit earlier rather than immediately before the teams come out.. the lad before the derby went down unanimously well I think (even on here) and that was timed earlier, albeit his song was slightly more upbeat with a guitar.

If people are saying it was cringeworthy and embarrassing I think people are quite right to criticise the… em.. criticism 😁

I felt the opposite. Totally left field pre-match entertainment which raised a large but flat crowd for kick off. Football on show then returned us to flat.

She did a great job in vet unfamiliar surroundings. Lack of atmosphere stems form current performances. Saints fans were a credit to their team in terms of noise.

Not a fan of SOL anyway, but her attempt did nothing for me and it's not a good choice of song to get the crowd fired up before a game. It works fine for celebrating a big win though.

My season ticket in the old North Stand was a couple of seats away from one of the Proclaimers. A long time ago now, so I can't remember which one, but he was always good for a chat.

We will have to agree to disagree but from my position in the west upper directly opposite the singing section there was a decent atmosphere starting to build. I always arrive early and I was actually hopeful that it could be a great game to be at purely in terms of atmosphere. regardless of my thoughts on the singer her performance killed the atmosphere and it never got going again, at least in our areas. Not her fault and fair enough giving things a try but as was said above it isn't difficult. Good food, good fitba and a beer would lead to a far better atmosphere

I understand the argument re a slow ‘operatic’ number not being a typical psych-up tune for a football game, but think if a girl singing a song before kick-off prevented us from raising an atmosphere for the rest of the day then we’re really struggling.

All for them trying stuff but it was lacking some foresight.

Walk to centre spot was awkward
Timing obviously
SoL shouldn't be forced, it's a right moment song
Away fans drown her out
Half time - facing the West when the hospitality are all getting their scran on

I'm sure she will have plenty feedback for them!

Glad I saw it for sure :)

i thought it was worth a try, don’t think it necessarily went down as well as it could have done but I don’t mind the club trying stuff like this.

As Pretty Boy said, a lot of things like this were tried in the early days of the English Premiership and over time they were ditched. That shouldn’t mean we just assume they don’t/won’t work here and now though, so i don’t mind Hibs trying different things while they find that out.

Good idea and thought she was excellent but Hibs just don't seem to do these things too well from a logistical perspective. The PA guy always seems to be who you're aware off no matter what's going on and that can't be right. He must have asked for 3/4 rounds of applause for her then cut her off mid verse at the end.

They started late - presumably waiting on the crowd coming in? It was advertised as 245 and didn’t start until 255.

The game ended up kicking off at 302/303 in the end.

For those if us of a certain age Nessun Dorma evokes wonderful football memories. Italia90 was one of the best world cups held in a football mad country. Probably helps that I was there for all of the Scotland group matches!

Never let it be forgotten it was also the backdrop to the Mercer scandal.

Ron's attempt at bringing a bit of culture and entertainment to ER. Can be a bit hit and miss but worth trying out different things for the crowd. The way things are going that will be the only entertainment we see on the pitch!

Aye, no doubting her talent as a singer but definitely not my cup of tea

And the West showed their true colours in their response to Nessum Dorma :)

The irony is in the translation Nessun Dorma (None will Sleep) half the stadium could have been asleep by that stage.

We are struggling as St Johnstone fans were only too happy to point out. The atmosphere that had built may well have been curtailed by events after kick off if they hadn't been by the events before it.

I remember going to a Clash concert at The Playhouse where the first support act was a snake charmer, it felt a bit like that at ER on Saturday.

Undertones, Teenage Kicks, players in the tunnel - make it so Ron/Ben 😀

Ramones, I Believe in Miracles when it’s inevitably 0-0 at half time

Iggy Pop- The Passenger at full time to satisfy the Drey Wright and Josh Campbell boo boys !

Playlist sorted !

I want the team to run out to the Clash's live version of "I fought the law"

And I'll never forget my first visit to East Ens Park and Into the Valley was being blasted out.

I remember seeing Ramones at Playhouse....supported by The Exploited.
I also remember "The Livi Punks" as they were known wandering down the queue before concert asking if anyone had any glue.
Those were the days...........and The Smiths at Coasters.

I was away for the weekend so can’t comment on the actual performance but it would strike me as very odd to have an opera singer as the entertainment. It is a kind of “you should really know your audience” moment.

I say this as someone who is into both football and opera and regularly attend both. I’m not sure they mix.

I’m also not sure we need to be constantly “entertained” by anything other than the football at ER. I go to watch Hibs (hopefully but these days rarely) entertain me with attacking, winning football in the company of who I go to the matches with. I don’t go for singers, big screens or anything else.

Me neither, but I don’t go for those new funky chips, the background music, or the clean pi55ers either…but they’re all nice to have and enhance the experience for many people. Trying these things doesn’t harm anyone and they aren’t mutually exclusive to attacking, winning football.

It’s just a shame we’re not enjoying the latter right now.

I remember the Livi punks almost bringing a Damned gig at the Nite Club (at the Playhouse) to a riot. It was Wattie of all folks who calmed things down. Nothing could have been further from my mind when listening to the girls voice on Saturday though :greengrin
