Müller and Mueller are pronounced the same with the latter being part of the ‘new’ (20th C) spelling reform that supposedly modernises German .. now Muller to follow how you say mullet and you’d have a point:greengrin. In the US Germanic immigrants probably changed, or had changed for them, the spelling a long time before then!
