Just read that Billy passed away yesterday.
60 appearances for us from 69 to 73.
Didn't realise he was manager of York City when Clayton Donaldson broke through.

That's a shame. Can remember him not being happy we were able to pick up Donaldson for no fee.

RIP Billy.

Sad to hear, Billy was a good honest player for Hibs at a time when the team struggled, I believe he was also chairman or something to do with the Hibs ex-players association, thoughts go out to his family.

Dreadful news remember him as a player when I was young and he was also a very popular manager at York City.
Far too young.
RIP Billy.

Played in some important matches mainly at left back, but also played at right back and midfield when he and Mervyn Jones competed to replace Joe Davis at left back.

Shades added to the competition when he followed Willie Mac to Hibs and eventually made the position his own.

Very good and reliable young player left at a time Hibs needed experienced cover, which by that time, Willie was.

RIP, way too soon.

Didn’t realise it was the Billy McEwan who seemed to do the circuit in the English leagues as a manager.
Was also noticing how many times he appeared on Billy Whizz posts that make a great read!
Just before my time RIP Billy McEwan
You have a wonderful surname

Sad news. I thought Billy was quite a classy midfielder but used less when ET took over. He slotted in well at right and left back as well.

RIP Billy

A neat and tidy player that could cover a number of positions.

I remember Billy as a good steady squad player when I started going in the early seventies. He often deputised for Pat Stanton, which was a shame for Billy as there was natural disappointment in the crowd( and this wee boy in particular) but Billy McEwan gave his all and had a great career in football, particularly at York and Sheffield Utd. RIP Billy.

Did Billy manage Rotherham? I have a vague recollection must have been mid-late 80s?

Apologies read everything so quick
The BillyHibs history threads are brilliant
Especially from the Tornadoes era when as a kid thought we won every week
To being older and remembering the games I attended

As well as the aforementioned York City it seems he managed at Rotherham as well as Sheffield United and Derby County.
Lots of York fans on Twitter speaking very highly of his time there.

Sorry to hear of the passing of Billy McEwan. Always regarded him as a fine, solid player for us, who was underrated during his time at ER.

RIP Billy

Remember Billy playing for us…mostly in what would be called the inside right position then.

Wasn’t usually first choice, but a handy player nevertheless.

Sorry to hear of his passing.

Billy played left back in my first league game at Easter Road in Nov 1969 against Motherwell. The pitch was dusted with snow and the game ended 1-1. Johnny Graham scored for Hibs and, inevitably, John "Dixie" Deans scored for Well.

The last time I can recall him playing for Hibs was deputising for Erich Schaedler, who was injured, at a game at Ibrox in March 73. We lost 1-0 to an offside goal scored by Tommy McLean and John Blackley was sent off for protesting.

Wrong Billy, Billy Hunter was secretary of the HFPA before I took over some years ago.

I'm sure I remember seeing Billy playing for Edina Hibs in A final at Leith Links. He would have been the stand out player on the park but for the fact there was a young lad called Cropley also playing!

Great photo of him, thanks for posting.

Yes remember his name well from that period on the team sheet - Hibs were a side on the rise then and developing some excellent talent they had within the squad and for Billy to hold his own and provide cover tells you the guy was reliable quality. RIP
