Looking at buying a used car and the prices seem incredibly high, is this due to covid?

If anyone has any tips to find better deals then please let me know!

It is to do with issues getting microchips to use in manufacturing of new cars having a knock on effect on the used car market. Unfortunately it doesn’t look like they are going to come down any time soon.

Think it's due to the lack of chips for electronics at the minute

Indirectly, yes, it has been caused by Covid.

Most of the world's semiconductors come from 2 factories. One in Japan which burnt down and the other which makes about 75% of them, diversified because so few cars were being bought and they haven't gone back to full production.

A friend of mine bought a second hand car over a year ago and just sold it for a profit!

What are you looking to buy?

I spent £28k on a used car in March 2021. I checked what it was worth on WeBuyAnyCar about November time and it was worth £33k. It’s an absolutely mental market

I’m the same paid 23k October 2020 getting a valuation of 25k now been tempered to change it but your just paying the huge premium on the next one.

Problem is used car prices will drop considerably at some point in the next couple of years so there’s a bit bit to be taken.

Good if you’re selling I suppose!

To be honest just a cheap run around like a polo or a fiesta sort of thing.

Also, does anyone know if a gear linkage cable is an easy DIY fix?

I bought my car outright in March 2021, after leasing it for 4 years. Bought it for £12k and I’ve saved almost £4k of payments since then
They’ve offered me £16k for it, but the problem is if I want a brand new car, same spec, but it’s 30% more expensive than the one I got in 2017

Decided to stick with what I’ve got for just now

Also, does anyone know if a gear linkage cable is an easy DIY fix?I did that a million years ago... think along the line of a bicycle brake cable replacement and you'll get the idea.

Not got a clue about anything less than 20 years old mind!!!!

We have two older cars we planned to change last/this year. Keeping them both for now.

Like me it’s sensible decision

Our i3 lease (PCH, not PCP) was due to come to an end in August

I enquired about entending by 12 months

I'm shocked that my payments will go DOWN by about 80quid per month!

Accepted that toot sweet

I know we got a decent deal whwn we took the car but I just looked at i3 36 month leases now

It costs over double what we would have paid by the time our extended lease will end!

Madness

Bought a car on a 4 year private lease in September 2020 - the details of the contract were agreed pre-covid.

At the outset I always thought I would return the car to the lease company, rather than pay the £10k balloon payment to keep it , but at present values, it looks like the car will be worth ~£18k in 2024, so would be daft not to buy it. That could all change of course, but the car buying matket has been turned on it's head in recent years for sure.

If you have a car that's knackered you're probably better fixing it due to the prices just now.

If you're in Edinburgh the Enterprise Car Club might be a shout. £20 a year and a few quid an hour to rent one. Hundreds of cars all over the city, just use the app and go. Very handy.
