On the day of the semi final I had travelled through west early doors to pick up some fishing equipment from Renfrew, after an ad on gumtree. Our plan was pick up the stuff, head to the Barra's for a late breakfast then onto the game. The chap I was buying the stuff from was very friendly and informative and all seemed well. After paying I was leaving his house via the kitchen and in full view on the draining tray next to the sink was a mug with a swastika on it. I didn't say anything as I was genuinely shocked and was mentally trying to understand what I'd just seen. Later on as we were in the Barra's a Celtic fan was trying to get us into a Celtic pub. When it was obvious we weren't interested he said "oh come on, we're all Nazi's at the end of the day". Is there something going on through there which we should be worried about or was I just incredibly unlucky enough to bump into two of them on the same morning.

Are you sure he said that and you didn't just mishear him?

I sometimes take the family to stay in a cottage in the borders. A few years ago we were in the supermarket in Kelso getting the holiday food shop and there were a number of very large individuals with the weird logos, obscure black clothes with ****ing swastikas and Norse runes and all sorts of nonsense, wandering around in groups of three or four. Lots of different UK accents. But not your biker types, kind of expensive looking clothing I saw a few different groups of them all day all round the area, turned out there was some sort of far right ‘gathering’ nearby. I think sometimes you just get unlucky. It’s when you rock up in the Algarve on your holiday and the same fellies disrupt your holiday for the second time you start to worry :greengrin

I went out with a girl from a small East Lothian village who’s dad had a swastika on the side of his shed.

I think everywhere has their nutters. I genuinely think people don’t understand what they’re aligning themselves to when they do stuff like that, but that’s probably naivety on my part there.

Renfrew is a staunchly loyalist area in that part of the world. I wouldn't be surprised if there are far right BNP types amongst them.

That's as true now as it was back in the 1930's, however there's no excuse in 2022 for not knowing what you're aligning yourself to.

Could it be a link to the IRA and Nazi Germany?

I can confirm the above unfortunately.

Plenty of decent folk, lots of new people to the town Eastern Europeans and North Africans which are a welcome and diverse addition but the staunch crowd have become even more staunch as a result.
'Wee Nippy/SNP out' graffiti regularly appears and is forever being removed.

These same people will be flying Israeli flags at Ibrox at the weekend without a hint of irony because Celtc are waving Palestinian flags.

It was very strange seeing Swastikas on beach towels and stuff when I was in Goa. Just an ancient symbol hijacked I guess. Different meanings to different cultures.

Was it a Nazi swastika or a different design? The design has been used throughout history by many different cultures with many different meanings. There are people out there who are trying to take the symbol back and use it as a positive thing as it once was.

Nazi swastika on one side of the mug, Hitler's face on the other. Not available at most high street supermarkets.

No idea. Going by appearances I would guess not though.

Big Billy fae Renfrew isn't a isn't on a quest for meaning, deciding that Eastern religion is the pathway to enlightenment? I'm surprised.

Fair doos. Like I said there are genuinely trying to replace the negative connotations associated with the symbol with the original meaning behind it. Thought it may have been one of those
