Why is it mental? If top clubs wanted to sign him it would happen. His top flight career is finished.

Well, I suppose it's a bit mental in the sense of where someone with his talent should be career-wise right now. And it's not at Falkirk.

Still, this has been talked to death so I'll shut up..

Leigh has been getting stick and abuse for years.
Possibly some of it has hurt/affected him.
His thumb sucking goal celebration was born out of abuse from hertz fans.
Am not sure opposing players in League 1 have any special qualities that can "wind up" Leigh any more than he has had for years.
He got more than most long before his more recent online activities.
He might just suck his thumb and get on with trying to make a living.

Hibs have signed a pre-contract with him. There are a number of conditions though:

He must loose 2 stones in weight;

He must score 15 more goals this season; and

He must stay out of all bother.

Done deal then.

PS All his children must wear the new fourth strip on match days.

After 7 SPL titles, 4 Scottish Cups, 3 Scottish League Cups, 2 Scottish player of the year awards and numerous Champions League and Europa League games not to mention the crowning pinacle of the Scottish Challenge Cup he must sit around the Falkirk dressing room and wonder "where did it all go wrong".😉

His career earnings of £15m might dull the pain as well as his huge guaranteed lifetime pension from a club as well run as Celtic.

Listening to Hibs fans you would think he has wasted away all his talent in the way that say Riordan did when in fact despite all his obvious demons he actually has had a hugely successful career.

Football is all he knows and if he winds it all down at Falkirk then so be it as he really has nothing left to prove as he can't beat Father time.

He's earned more money
He's won more trophies
He's scored more goals
He's played in Europe more often
He has more international caps

Riordan isn't a Hibs legend IMO. Good player, but couldn't wait to leave for more money then sat on the bench. Came back when he had lost all his pace.

Not having a go, just think legend is banded about too much these days. Lewis Stevenson is the most recent true Legend.

Contributions will indeed stop when he is no longer an employee (at least from Celtic they would) - depends on the type of pension in place if he could carry on contributing but if it has been well funded whilst he was at Celtic, investment return alone could help grow the pot significantly - 25/30 years of investment return.

A pension is a pot of money that it is built up during the years of employment and can be taken when the employee retires. Celtic only contribute when the player is employed after that the pot of money accumulated is used to create a pension.

In a footballers case HMRC recognise this at retirement at 35 and clubs like Celtic or Hibs will have set this pension scheme up for their players.

If its non contributory then its a no brainer though if the players are asked to contribute then they may opt out though even that's daft given that it's a simple way to build up a tax free lump sum of 25% of the pension pot.

Every 1st team Celtic player gets paid
up to £1m a year basic salary before win bonus ,goal bonus ,trophy bonus and European pool playing fees.

In a star strikers case for the best part of 7 years it will be considerably more and all their players will be attached to big city personal wealth financial advisors.

£15m for Griffths over 8 years is just a rough guess which if anything is on the low side.

You think Griffith was on an average of £36K per week over the length of his Celtc contracts and you think that is an underestimate? I doubt very much Leigh earned more than £20k a week at his peak at Celtc. I believe Scott Brown was their highest earner and he was on around £30k per week there, so if anything your rough guess is on the high side.

An absolutely ridiculous waste of talent. If he couldn't get himself motivated to get fit for Celtics biggest season in years going for 10 then of course to play for Scotland in the summer in a very rare occassion we are playing in a major tournament then that says to me he has the wrong attitude. If he had kept his head down, kept himself fit then he would have been a massive asset for us in the Euros last summer.

I understand he has mental health issues etc so I knows its perhaps not quite as simple as saying he just simply couldn't be bothered getting fit but its just a terribly sad waste of talent. Should be currently playing at a significantly higher level than Falkirk.

The ship has long sailed for him coming back to hibs i'm afraid. Way too much baggage and unfortuantly over recent years has been grabbing headlines for the wrong reasons. Wish him all the best though and genuinely do hope he can salvage some sort of career still even if it is in a lower division.

You can't understand mental health issues if you fail to understand why someone cant be motivated.

The longer you fail to perform to your ability and feel you could be letting people down, the more you blank reality and have no motivation. there's no way back for Leigh because everything he does is publicly slagged off and if you hate yourself there's no way out. I've recently under peformed at work, and tried to blank it instead of man through it. I've had to face tough demons to apologise, and have the mindset of proving people wrong and make it up. It's tough as hell. If Griff is getting it tight on a daily basis and he feels himself he's a failure what chance has he got?

Apologies if my comments came across as ignorant. I fully sympathize with anyone who suffers from mental health issues. I know from my personal life and from my line of work how devastating mental health can be and how its can truly tear people lives apart. Once again, I apologize for sounding uncompassionate or trying to downplay the seriousness of it. I was simply trying to say that unfortuantly Leigh hasn't been able to overcome his demons and keep his career going at a high level. I do believe though there have been a lot of things that leigh hasn't done to help himself. There just seems to be too much trouble surrounding him. perhaps he hangs around with the wrong crowd, perhaps its a byproduct of his mental health? Such a waste as he should still have a few years left but it looks like he has completely lost interest. Kenny Miller probably ran further in the technical area. I can't believe Ian Murray hasn't had a bigger job yet. Airdrie were first to every ball and played in a style I'd love to see us play with. Quick passing lots of energy and the ball getting in the box very regularly.

I was there too Wookie and agree with this. Don’t know why as I can’t stand either team! Airdrie looked good whereas Falkirk looked piss poor. Griffiths took quite a bit of abuse with the paedo chants. Quite a bit of trouble after the game where the two Airdrie buses were parked.

Never saw any bother but I had to pack away so left later than most fans. Airdrie were good to watch and won pretty much every 50-50. Falkirk almost let them walk into their final third something I have been very critical of Hibs for. I have been a t quite a few games Leigh has "played" this year and I hope he has plans outside football after this season. He would have been better concentrating on his mental health and trying to get a few more good years in the game rather than playing when he is clearly not interested. Such a waste

Firstly - thanks for sharing through sharing hopefully the insights start to get through.

So someone who gets it. For all we talk about mental health (and their is an excellent thread on one of the sub-forums)it seems that accordance of understanding in football circles tends to be either fleeting (always seems to be a ‘but’) or non-existent.

Well folks we are sitting in a ticking issue here due to the pandemic - you don’t agree - ask a teacher or a social worker or someone working with a related charity. Football is not immune well start to see more issue permeate our lives.

He's here!
14-03-2022, 06:26 AM
I can't believe he stayed on the park as long as he did. I was there and Falkirk were poor but Griffiths never made any effort and looks disinterested imo.

Did Ian not have the St Mirren job at one point or am I mixing him up with Alan Stubbs?

He was in the dug out with St Mirren when Alan Stubbs was our manager in the Championship. Hard gig with St Mirren on the slide and Ranger and Hibs also in the league. Having a look at his stats his record isn't as good as I thought. I probably just enjoyed watching a team that tried to play some attacking football and that didn't think 20 passes between centre halves and goalkeeper every possession was entertaining. Quite a few of the games I have watched up and down the leagues have seen teams trying to play possession football. Most have been boring to watch and most of the teams playing it have been defeated and hardly had a shot on target. Airdrie were like a breath of fresh air driving forward at every opportunity with pace and intensity. Falkirk were exactly like Hibs in the second half and getting back to Leigh he may just have been bored as the ball was shared among players who never went near the opposition goal

That result isn't much of a surprise. Montrose are a really good part-time team and have one of the best managers in the lower leagues.

A good point I saw made by someone was as Falkirk are still full time, they are missing out on players who want to stay part-time, and ending up with the dregs of the full-time market

You're telling me. Probably not jambos but just annoying barstewards who usually last a few months at most before getting binned and resurfacing under yet another new name.

Not at all. I agree with that. More he joined very recently and has done nothing but stir it.

I don't think he's stirring it. I agree with every word he's said, I don't want the guy anywhere near Easter Road unless he's paid for his ticket into the stadium.

I agree he will never play for us again.

A part of me thinks however if he was to come to Hibs and knuckle down he could do a job.

Sure, but if he couldn’t knuckle down during several last chances at Celtic then there’s no chance he’ll do it anywhere else.

He’s Antti Niemi.

Yes, texting 15 year olds will do that. Leigh Griffiths wasn't some close family member. He was a guy who played here on loan then went to Celtic. I never cherished or loved him. Couldn't lace the boots of dozens in terms of achievement at Hibs. Even then, if a genuine Hibs legend was caught texting a 15 year old for pictures, I'd immediately want them gone.

Are you actually suggesting that his behaviour was excusable because of his footballing achievements? Because its coming across that way. Terrifying if so.

His behaviour is horrible. So absolutely no chance he should return.

And even if that didn't happen, he still wouldn't be worth it. He's not good enough anymore. He never shown any desire to sign permanently for us when he was decent, he shouldn't be near us now he's more Sunday league than Premier league level.

No, it really really is. His behaviour should be strongly condemned. No ifs or buts. Trying to justify signing him or excusing his disgusting behaviour is very wrong.

It's no wonder women and girls feel so unsafe when this kind of behaviour is seen as anything other than deplorable.

Footballers aren't really role models are they. He likely made a mistake but to be honest don't know a lot about it. Police decided nothing to see so let the guy live his life without the extreme outrage. He clearly isn't good enough to play for Hibs so not sure why it is deemed so important. His football actions have clearly affected his career and he is living with the consequences though he clearly has indicated mental health issues so think some of the pitchforks should be dropped.

Whether they want to be or not footballers are role models. Infact I'd guess that footballers are probably the role model that young boys look up to more than any other profession in society.

They might not want to be role models, or ask to be one but whether they like it or not they definitely are.

There’s nae point in pointing out he had no idea the girl was 15, the people who’ve decided he’s a nonce aren’t going to change their minds. The photo is still available to see by Googling it. Anyone who thinks they’d think that the photo he responded to was of a 15 year old is kidding themselves. In my opinion.

For those who don’t want to look at it, she was extremely buxom, dressed in a bra and pants. Of course he was being set up and fell for it. However, despite her repeated attempts to get him to say something explicit, he didn’t. He didn’t get his cock out or anything. He did a camera emoji.

I wonder, how do you get proof age, ask for a birth certificate? He was suckered by someone who wanted to set him up. He should have known better, of course.

Was he careless....yes very. However, that doesn’t make him Saville, or even that Jambo daftie Thomson, who did get the boaby oot.

Repeat, iI said it was stupid, in case any of the morally outraged get over stimulated at a sniff of a nonce.

Repeat, he’s done as footballer, don't want him at Hibs.

And we put this crap to bed and spare the moral indignation pish?

Some need to think hard before they put in print their opinions of LG. I would highly recommend and advise those calling him a predator or pedophile, to read the legal documents available plus the testimony given by the young girl in question. Printing your opinions leaves you open to libel proceedings through legal and binding fact not opinion.

I seem to remember the girl he messaged posting about how there was no way Leigh could have known her age. Not saying it wasn't wrong, but seemed more of a footballer trying his luck with a girl rather than purposely trying to chat up a minor.

From what I've read about it, that's the truth behind the story.

Stupid and inconsiderate to his current partner, yes, but there was no evidence he was knowingly seeking-out/chatting-up under-age girls.
