View Full Version : We look a very ordinary team

Early days in the Maloney reign but we haven’t improved any and look decidedly ordinary. Other relatively ordinary teams coming to ER and seem to have our number. One point from 3 home games not good enough.
Vast improvement required or we will go backwards.

Imo we’ve been a very ordinary team for a while, the only difference is we had Boyle to get us out of it.
If Boyle was having an off day or was closely marked we really struggled.
Now we just have a team of fairly average players all over the pitch. It’s no surprise we’re now lacking a cutting edge.
Jasper looked good though.

We already are going backwards. Both metaphorically and literally on the park.

When I saw the lineup I was worried Campbell and JDH without the assistance of an adult in what was always going to be a competitive midfield. As it turned out that was where we lost it, sad days.

Agree but there was no other option, Allan looked so far off the pace. Without newell we will struggle badly in midfield we really can’t be doing with losing him and magennis for the rest of the season.

I think we’ve been a very ordinary team for a while. One that had an extraordinary player in Boyle that papered over the cracks we see now that have always been there.

I think apart from centre mid we look like we have a decent squad. That was the case in December and it’s the case now. That’s why Maloney is in trouble. If he couldn’t see that then he deserves to go.

FFS been saying this for a long time now, quality takes real cash, we dont have that kind of cash to splash, so we need to make the best of the pretty average players we have. Boyle has gone and we are left with the mince.
It will not change anytime soon.

Let's be honest, it's not just centre midfield. We don't have anybody that can actually score goals either.
Four league games out of five with no goals scored, plus no goals in normal time against Cove, is pathetic.

This, in a nutshell. Boyle loss to this Hibs team is being exposed. All it takes is opponents to press the ball, us to keep trying to play through a poor midfield of Campbell, JDH and Mueller and we get results like today. SM either has to change the midfield or change the game plan, otherwise we'll have many more days like today.

We are 2 points away from both 4th and 9th. We really need to keep a place in the top 6 as this run of form, when we don't seem able to "buy a win or even a goal", is horrendous.

Enough chances to win comfortably today. Poor finishing cost us the points.

There are a lot of very good players in the group but as a team we are a shambles.

I disagree, I’d say there are a few but far from a lot

Exactly. Any team with strikers at the level we've got would struggle in this league.

We’ve been an average squad for a while but we had Boyle who brought that X factor.
I actually don’t think we’re too far off something good though and I have faith that given time, maloney will get this working.
Jasper and Mueller have shown early promise, I’m really impressed with Muellers touch. Once he gets a bit more used to the Scottish game I think the assists and goals will flow.
We have been seeing good link ups between Mueller and Cadden on the right and Mitchel and Henderson on the left.
The defence with Porteous in it looks a lot more solid.
The issue is the middle of the park. JDH and Cadden aren’t the answer.
I’d love to see a midfield 3 of Henderson, Magennis and Newell. That midfield has drive, technical ability and a bit of tenacity.

One fortunate point from 9 is not acceptable. We’re not an ordinary team, we’re worse than that.

We're a team of ordinary players being asked to play a system they're not capable of playing. A different system might provide a slight improvement, unfortunately I think that's all it would be. I think we'll beat Arbroath though.

For about 20-25 minutes in 2nd half, thought we were very good with quick passing and good link up play.
Maloney was right in his interview, on another day we win that game by a few goals.
We have some good young technical footballers at the club - constant groans and loud boos aren’t going to help them.

The loss of a player of Boyles ability would weaken every team in Scotland outside the bigot brothers.
He is almost irreplaceable and it would not matter who the manager was, he would find his team weakened immeasurably by Boyles loss.
Maloney has a hard task ahead of him to keep us fans happy, time will tell if he is up to it but we have to give him until the end of this season at least to make his mark.

Disagree with the first point. Over the last few seasons we lost Boyle to international duty, injury and those games where he was either marked out the game of in poor form and we still won games. Yes we're weaker without him but we should still be able to win most weeks against most teams.

Its a strange one, we looked a decent team against hearts without scoring, then play like this today, newell was a huge miss, maloney needs to accept he doesnt have the players to play his system or its going to get a whole lot worse for him

Cadden doesn’t play in the middle of the park.
Maloney only plays two in the middle of the park so would need a change to get your three in

I’ve not said Cadden plays in the middle.
The half time sub today was to play 3 in the middle. The second half we started with Henderson, JDH and Campbell in the middle and with that extra man in there we looked more solid

Come on JDH was having a good game? I’ve never seen a player pass back to who he received the pass from as much as he does.
We need to play 3 in CM. The majority of top teams in the world go with a 3.

Sorry but that opinion is as pish as Doidge was yesterday. We have a decent group of players, with some key players missing, some key players not firing, and some very new, trying to play a new(ish) style that is not reaping any rewards (yet?).

Passes it back then too often hides. Shirks his responsibility. Jasper running into space to free himself up to receive a pass was like a breath of fresh air.

We looked far better when Henderson came on and played behind Nisbet. When Jasper came on he was moved into a deeper role in front of the centre halves and disappeared. Great tactics

A decent set of players, no matter what excuses we use, should be able to get a result, even a point, at home against Livi or St Mirren!!
What we have is a set of individuals thrown together that look completely lost.
We're kidding ourselves on if we think it's all down to players trying to adapt to a new system. It's BS. They're professional footballers that have played under numerous managers in their careers, all of whom would have played different systems to one another.
They need to step it up quickly and start producing.

Yesterday was just like a game in the run that cost JR his job.
Unsurprising really as the areas that needed addressed in January weren’t addressed, and we lost the one good thing we had.
We just seem to have recruited a collection of players without any real plan as to how they fit together.

Not seeing what others do in Mueller so far..although he is playing in strange areas in the pitch, often with his back to goal..he doesnt really look like creating or scoring atm. I don't really see what he will bring yet but it's early days.
It'd all very meh and there are no players in that team that I enjoy watching, other than Cadden for his endeavour and crossing. (Which our strikers just watch flash across the box while they stand like statues behind their markers).

Most of the teams look ordinary apart from Celtic and Rangers who buy the league. Jasper looked good but the minute he makes a mistake folk will be on his back.

Not disagreeing but this "on another day..." comment via the manager has also become far too common place on here and other social media. The reality is our team has struggled to take chances for a while now so on another day I'd expect the same. Scoring is an outlier. :D

It’s a good point that ..”on another day “ is fine if it is used for an occasional missed opportunity. When it’s most weeks , it is signalling something deeper is not working .
