Been quite a while since I started a thread here 😂

But for 60 minutes, he was seemed like sometimes our only central midfield presence in both the attacking and defending sense. Absolutely at it from the word go, loved a tackle tonight.

Must start every game that he's fit for from now until the end of the season if that continues IMO

Best player on the park. We lost our way when he went off

Absolutely fantastic. Both him and JDH played well

That's what the guy is capable of. I've been (rightly imo) critical of him at times for the square/backwards passing. But only because he's so good when he turns on the ball and gets us moving forward. He usually always turns up in the big games as well and tonight was no different.

Also, class hair.

I can’t believe some don’t rate him and think he’s lightweight.

He’s a big lad, puts himself about and is quality on the ball.

Thought JDH was very good breaking up play tonight too

Newell is quality and showed it again tonight. He was good at Motherwell last outing aswell then strangely benched. He has to play in the middle when fit. JDH was also good tonight but Newell is the main man. Can see why Gray made him captain. Hopefully Magennis can get fit and bring in 2 strong centre mids in the summer and we'll be looking good.

Hope the injury isn't too bad though looked a bit ominous.

Campbell is a good young prospect but still got a way to go to be first choice and the less said about Drey Wright the better.

Agree but when Magennis is fit you have a strong four of Newell, JDH, Magennis and Hendo, who I thought was really good tonight and will only get better with more game time.

Would like another one in there for numbers but that's a good midfield four.

I honestly think that's a myth. I did an analysis of the Cove 1st half where he was criticized for exactly what you're saying. It showed he passed forward twice as much as back and had an average of 2 touches every time he was in possession. He also retained possession for 93% of the time. There's perceptions and there's facts.

Correct. Utter myth Newell slows us down. He's been our best midfielder by far for 2 years now. Vital, quality player.

I loved that there was no jockeying standing off them and letting them play like previous weeks, no waiting to intercept a pass but actually forcing the issue and winning the ball back and when he didn't win the ball he left a arm on them so they knew he was there.

They've set a standard on how we need to be without the ball tonight, play like that in the middle and we'll have a far more successful second half to the season.

He was on the pitch at the end and seemed to be fine. Doig was limping quite badly though.

I thought Newell was excellent and I've long been someone who's held the opinion that we were a worse team when he played, but today was everything you want from him. Positive, combative and really drove us forward.

I disagree with the OP though about him being the only central midfield presence, I thought JDH had a great game too.

If they both play like that, along with Cadden and Doig/Mitchell then we're doing okay in the middle. Just need the forward players to start clicking.

Going against the grain but while I thought Newell was ok, I didn't think he excelled. Thought JDH contributed more but we fell out the game completely after 40 minutes until the last 10. We definitely need something else in midfield.

He was like a man possessed and proved you don’t need to be a clumsy brute to be the midfield anchor. If he’d stayed on the park we’d have won that

I’ve been critical and ambivalent towards him in the past but he’d be first name on the teamsheet for me playing like that

Really good tonight , combative and tried to play forward passes if it was on. I’m probably wrong but I feel like he gets a hard time because he doesn’t ‘look like’ the traditional ball winning combative midfielder , but he certainly puts himself about

Him and JDH performed heroically in the 1st half but dropped away dramatically in the 2nd.

Neither produced anything creative in either half I thought. Absolutely nothing against them but neither are good enough for Hibs. They created very little, we need someone in there confident on the ball. It may he Henderson but I’m not feeling it yet. Scotty Allan in the last 20 mins of ever game feels so obvious to me but I doubt it’s coincidence past two managers disagree.

We’re in a bad shape just now, it can’t be denied. Star striker hugely out of confidence and no-one creating for him.

Not good.

Newell was brilliant last night. However, those who are saying that he plays like this week in / week out are kidding themselves on. When our play is slow and laborious he is part of that issue. He’s set the standard last nigh and hopefully he maintains this. I’ve got to say again though, he was brilliant last night and I hope his injury isn’t too bad.

To lose him and Doig to injury given how well they played was so unlucky, and a bit indicative of our season so far.

Best I’ve seen from either. Their energy, desire to win their personal battles and drive us forward was absolutely immense.

I thought Doig was really good in the first half, probably as good as I’ve seen him this season. Think there have been signs, since Maloney came in, of him starting to find some proper form.

Newell was really good, looked like he had a point to prove. If he plays in that manner, with that urgency and intensity more often folk wouldn’t have a problem with him.

Impressed with Newell, I can be one of his critics as he has that type of game in him but just doesn't show it enough. He was the all round midfielder we need, energy, drive, enthusiasm, well done and more of the same please.

Was excellent (again) last night. Particularly liked when he was bullying the Hearts defender at a throw-in after he'd been fouled previously. Takes no nonsense, and dishes out plenty, as well as being a tidy footballer. Was worried about Baningame, but Joe had enough to keep him out of the game, while still offering plenty himself.
Wish he'd stop doing the customary one-per-game ridiculous foul that almost always results in a booking though. There's no need - he's much better at fouling than that.

This is becoming the latest Hibs myth (that probably starts here) - that Newell never passes forwards, and I'm feeling this is just going to put pressure on him with idiots like the guy you're talking about.

Many very good players play predominantly short square passes but are always available to receive the ball and create space for others by doing it quickly. Sometimes you just have to go back - it's better than being dispossessed or passing to somebody who's got a man tight to him.

Joe Newell is a very good player at this level- I'm amazed at the level of criticism he and JDH are getting. They are very good at their jobs and plenty top teams play 2 holding types- they just need a Magennis type to play with to complement them.

The big difference last night is hertz didn't sit back and try to frustrate Hibs. That's a big difference. To give them their due, they made a game of it, and when both teams are trying to get forward most of the time we get a proper game of football and good players, like Newall who has good control of the ball, can stand out as being better than the rest.
