Are they really considering not even pretending to try and educate or rehabilitate? Locked up for 23 hours a day is no way to treat people.

The article makes a lot of good points about prisoner welfare and rehabilitation needling addressed. The one thing I do completely disagree with however is his objection to short term prison sentences and people in on remand with “trivial criminal records”. That’s just not the case. Very few people get remanded and if they do you can bet that there is a high risk of re offending or danger to the public for them to have been remanded. You don’t get remanded for your run of the mill assault to injury, dealing some street drugs or a couple of housebreakings.
What happens once their in jail may need reformed but sending them in the first place is not the issue.

There are some who think that's what Covid rules did!?
It has been used as a way of managing prisoners for a long time e.g. staff shortages, security issues or any other number of excuses.
