I wonder if in your line up Mueller and Mitchell will swap around? With the full backs playing so high up the pitch, if the inside forwards also go wide they’ll get in each other’s road. If they tuck inside it will let them get shots away.

I don’t think we’ll play with that team but if I was trying to shoe horn in the players I want to play with that’s probably what I’d go with.

He is a solid defender which is great for some managers and some teams. But maloney wants defenders who can pass the ball forwards quickly and accurately. Paul mcgin cannot.

Not the case. McGinns distribution has been brilliant since he joined. He’s had numerous assists but more importantly he has consistently fed great passing into Boyle and Nisbet.

Good that we have competition but our back 3 of McGinn, Porto and Hanlon is up there with best in the league already. It’s the improved possession and pressing that has made us more defensively solid recently, not the personnel

At some point though we have to back our defenders to win their individually battles, we don’t need to offer them that much protection.

If Livi midfielders are pushing higher up the pitch, that should leave more space for Henderson to drive forward.

Doidge should start today, especially in these conditions. Then again, he should be starting every game. We are a better team when he is in it.

Nisbet has been great in a 2, ineffective on his own in the main. He's no target man or back to goal striker. Nothing everyone doesn't know already. For me it's a misconception that the main reason for his drop in form was the transfer speculation - contributed yes but his main problem was Doidge's injury and continuing absence from the team. JDH and Newell are two good individual players and can operate in a 4, worked early on under Ross. They simply don't work in a 3 - and we don't need the defensive minded similarity in their games whilst playing 3 centre halves. When Magennis is fit he should play. The only time I would play JDH and Newell in a 3 would be to accomodate Allan further forward. Allan obviously doesn't have the running power he used to but is miles ahead of anyone else for creativity. It wouldn't be first choice if everyone fit though.

Personnel aside I'm most interested to see if Maloney proves to be flexible, if a game is won/turned around by tactical decisions. If he can change the shape for the opposition/conditions. He can't stick to a rigid 3-4-3 every time. I played a number of games for the local boys brigade some 20 years ago and have the full sky sports subscription, so I'm qualified to say

For me you play your top players. That's Doidge and Nisbet. Mueller looks class too* and Rocky looks good - early doors for them. Henderson is here to play. Porteous, Hanlon...I'd be playing Newell deep as the quarter back - offers far more than JDH. For 3-4-3 would like to see
