"Cardinal Reinhard Marx offered a personal apology to abuse survivors on Thursday, in the wake of a report criticizing the handling of cases in his archdiocese of Munich and Freising."
...
“There was no real interest in their fate, in their suffering. In my opinion, this is also due to systemic reasons, and at the same time I bear moral responsibility for this as acting archbishop.”

This is now such a common occurrence, I've lost track of how many investigations of mass abuse there have been in the last few years.

It's like listening to politicians, who basically say, "we're sorry, we acted wrongly, lessons have been learned"... then you just wait for the next investigation that shows that nothing's changed.

If a Catholic Priest was to get married to a woman he would be excommunicated, however if he abuses children then the church will circle the wagons and protect him.

I just don't get organised religion, I understand how some people find comfort in it but it just baffles me.

I'm not sure about elsewhere in the world, or even the UK, but the Catholic Church in Scotland handed all responsibility for safeguarding over to an independent, external body last year.

That should see the end of any systemic cover up by the hierarchy in this country.

It’s like any organised, elite power structure.

Just an explanation of why I posted this, in case it comes over as some kind of agenda (which is understable, TBF)

It was on the German news the night before and I just found the whole thing shocking, but (sadly) unsurprising.

There's just been so many similar incidences like this over the last few years and the whole scale of it is just depressing, including the lack of humanity on the part of those in charge.

IMO, it's the most common form of Stockholm Syndrome.

I had a brief spell of something similar, years ago, so I can understand some people's reluctance to let go.
