…and fittingly, Maus, one of the finest books I’ve ever read and certainly one of the greatest graphic novels of all time, banned by a Tennessee school board on spurious ‘taste’ grounds  Hopefully the actual result of the decision is extra publicity and more people will read it.

Visited Belsen in the 80s …I have never understood how man can treat others in such a cruel and barbaric way

:agree:

Dachau in the 90s for me. Horrific. Took me a few days to get over it, tbh.

I visited Auschwitz on my last day in Krakow a few years back. Glad it was my last day as I was down for days afterwards.

TBH I don't think it's that hard to understand how people can allow something like the Holocaust to happen. Nazism could have happened almost anywhere. It doesn't take too much of the population to be rabid supporters and even less to actually carry out the barbaric acts if enough people are quietly compliant, often for no other reason that to preserve their own safety.

My lasting impression of Auschwitz was two-fold.

1. I was experiencing it in colour. For many of us, the war happened in black and white.

2. Contrary to the myth, the birds were singing.

All of that added a surreal backdrop to the horrific history lesson.

I also had to calm a German woman who seemed to want to take the blame for it all, Harry Enfield style.

And then there was the wee scrote who draped himself in an Israeli flag and shot daggers at anyone who looked his way.🤨

It should never be forgotten. And judging by the book titles in Tesco etc it won't be.
There seems to be an abiding fascination for the subject among readers of popular fiction

I wondered why this (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/jan/27/the-boy-in-the-striped-pyjamas-fuels-dangerous-holocaust-fallacies) was in The Guardian today till I saw thread.

I haven’t been to Auschwitz (or any of the other nazi sites) but it’s definitely on the to-do list when I get to that part of Europe. Having been to the killing fields in Cambodia, and the holocaust museum in El Paso, Texas, I know what people mean by the dark and lasting feeling these places give you.

It’s these sort of things you tell people they should definitely go and do, and you don’t want to say because they’re “good” - they’re just important, eye-opening, and amazing in their own way. But clearly harrowing and unbelievable at times too.

On a similar note The KGB Museum in Vilnius was quite a moving experience.

Damn - I’ve been to Vilnius and never went/wasn’t aware. Was a scotland trip so didn’t take the time to investigate what was around other than pubs sadly. Lovely wee city too!

I went to one on a school trip years back, wasn't one of the "death" camps but it was still horrific at 15 years old.

Went to Auschwitz when I was in my 20s. Harrowing.

If you are on Twitter I recommend you follow @auschwitzmuseum.

It's a daily dose of trauma, but an important account to follow.
