Scot Squad raises a few laughs.
Queen of the New Year was awful on about every conceivable level.
Only An Excuse was well past it's sell by date but surely we could have replaced it with something better. It always amazes me that in a nation with so much comedy talent we have served up pish year after year at new year for about 2 decades.

This. Thank God for Netflix, we watched Don't Look Up and thought it was far better than anything on BBC Scotland tonight.

People still watch council tele ? 🤷
Hard to believe that they could replace a sh ite comedy show with an even worse one. We had music on with the tv volume down with subtitles on.

Well in a similar vein I kind of miss, in a strange sort of way, picking at the crusty scab on the top of my baldie heid, but I don't want to stand up and crack my head off another open kitchen cupboard door, no thanks.

Agree. Don't Look Up is excellent. Very accurate representation of how the world is in this day and age although done in a comedy type way. Decent watch away from all the Hogmanay tripe.

I thought that was the best scene in it. Grandparents would often give you money on the sly, that was what the joke was. I liked the zoom policeman as well.

Scotsquad was absolutely dire, juvenile comedy at best, in my opinion.

Only an excuse died 20 years ago. Its rotting corpse is still evident in the scriptwrighters for Queen of the New Year...and its cr@p sketches. Best not brought back to mind.
At least even the BBC recognised the Hogmanay fayre was bowfin and ditched it, the every cringy Jackie Bird and the Shetland Sweater brigade.
At least Jack Docherty got a decent Hambo/ Puddle Drinker dig in.

He couldnt take his eyes off Joy Crookes who looked a bit uncomfortable with the whole 'duet' thing. They both have Irish roots so he clearly thought it was a good idea, it just wasnt though. She's fantastic, however.

There’s no more damming indictment of Glasgow ‘comedy’ that their leading impressionist had to tell people who he was impersonating first.
If you want to know what cutting edge comedy is on the West coast then open a Christmas cracker from 40 years ago.

Yep - better than still game for me (although admittedly CTF has its fair share of less funny sketches too) whereas still game was a steady performer. Just that it’s got steadily old and there’s only so long you can keep making auld boys swearing at each other funny in different ways.

I always thought CTF had as many misses as hits but the hits were good enough to carry it. Still Game got tired, it was getting that way even before the end of the 1st run and bringing it back was a mistake. Always best to go out on a high rather than being reduced to characters like 'methadone' Mick.
Ford Kieran and Greg Hemphill are strange. Together they have produced 2 shows that have endured for a long time and are still looked back on fondly. Individually I can't think of any of their TV work that I have enjoyed. Last night's effort from Henphill was no exception, I think they need each other.

Probably agree with all of that! I’d also add that I think Kiernan is the funnier of the two. Also don’t enjoy the sketches as much when Karen Dunbar is the main character. As a bunch though they did some quality sketches over the years.
Ronald Villiers always my favourite though. The big man probably takes second slot.

Where's the burds?
Was past its sell buy date about 10 years ago.
I’ve always worried that the whole West of Scotland was laughing uproariously at Weegie TV comedy and it simply wasn’t translating to my Edinian sensibilities. Mind you,I laugh at Malky Milne’s jokes so you would assume that I’m easily pleased?

The Hogmanay tv was cringe-making as usual.
Honestly if the beeb just put out a compilation of old IM Jolly or Wherra Burds sketches they'd win the ratings war hands down! But we have to watch some tedious females in a studio and the ghastly Texas cranking it out again.

Only an excuse was crushingly irrelevant and past it 20 years ago and it's a testament to the cretinous lack of imagination of those calling the shots that it took until 2022 to finally ditch it -embarassingly unfunny drivel that won't be missed by me!

Nah it was still relevant and definitely still funny 20 years ago. Last ten years not so much, felt like Watson just couldn’t be bothered that much with it anymore. Hasn’t been great for a while but people go overboard with the criticism given what it’s been up against all that time (far worse ‘comedy’ even now regularly on tv).
But aye, it has got to the stage it was barely worth watching in the later years. He’d add in the odd new funny piece, but ultimately it would be drowned out by the same Frank Macavennie etc gags

I had to endure the whole of Jools Holland, Mrs Browns boys, Morecame and Wise, general TV ***** at insanely loud volume.
I sympathise with all who had to suffer that banal tripe.
Been home for just over 10 hours and my ears are still ringing.

The writers for QotNY were Messrs Hemphill (Chewin the Fat & Still Game) and Florence (Burnistoun), so no mugs in the comedy game. It was decent in parts.
As you say, Jack Docherty got his usual ‘big up’ Edinburgh and ‘have a go’ at the Jambos into the Scot Squad script in the first couple of minutes, so can’t complain!!
