View Full Version : World Conflicts - Christmas 2021

Reports Russia could invade Ukraine as early as Christmas Eve (25 December doesn't have the same relevance in the Orthodox Christian calendar as it does in the West, and there's a precedent in terms of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan commencing on the same day in 1979)

Tonight the Saudi-led coalition fighting in Yemen carried out air strikes on the international airport of the Houthi-controlled Yemeni capital Sanaa after asking civilians to immediately evacuate.

China murmuring about Taiwan. Israel and Iran simmering away.

Are we going to see significant global military conflict before this year is out?

Iran/Isreal - don’t think so. Both know there can be no winner there.
China/Taiwan - don’t think so either. China not as strong as is being made out. It would ruin their already on a cliff edge economy. They are looking at massive property crash very soon as it is.
The other two are going to happen. And we’ll do nothing about either although we will arm the Saudi’s.

It doesn't matter who goes to war against whom. We all knows it will.be innocent people who die and rich people will get even richer

Another global conflict feels somewhat inevitable. It will likely be markedly different from the previous world wars but impactful all the same.

An economically fragile China flexing, an emboldened Putin who knows the west is impotent against him, a hawkish element within the US administrations denied a proper war for too long and stung by humiliation in Afghanistan, a new left wing 'threat' democratically elected in South America..... Add to that the economic fall out of an ongoing pandemic, a shift towards a post fossil fuel world that impacts powerful military nations, increased scarcity of resources due to population growth and extreme weather events.

It would be more surprising if we don't see a major incident in the next few years. Not necessarily an all out war, perhaps a Cuban missile crisis style event or a proxy war among 2 expendable nations.

Xi missed a trick when Biden pulled troops out of Afghanistan and said that they wouldn't be fighting any more wars that had nothing to do with them. He should have trotted into Taiwan the next day.

Putin wants to revive the Soviet Union and Xi wants to reclaim all of historic China , don’t really see much war happening though they will just roll right in and take what they want while America and the EU threaten with sanctions , real big sanctions

In the OT version these are sword, famine, wild beasts and pestilence.

I'm getting the aroma of war, food shortages and plague all right, but wild beasts ... is that ******* seagulls? :dunno:

If you never want to sleep at night try Googling Russia’s Status-6 oceanic weapon (Poseidon), a 100mt nuclear torpedo drone. Twice the yield of the biggest bomb ever detonated. Designed to create a nuclear tsunami.

Swimming about in the Atlantic and Pacific right now.

Taiwan was China, though. It kind of still is. It’s the remnants of the Republic of China as opposed to the rival People’s Republic of Chia (splitters).

Chang Kai Sheks KMT were a bunch of corrupt warlords who walked into the post imperial vaccum who were widely despised by the Chinese people and would have been overthrown if the Communists hadn’t defeated them. Retreating off to Taiwan was a fair enough ploy but setting yourself up as the Real China was a bit cheeky. It’s a bit like Douglas Ross losing an election, getting on a boat to Inchcolm and announcing that’s the new Scotland :agree:

I was reading the other day about the indigenous Taiwanese population, who were more like Samoans or Fijians visibly but were gradually displaced by the Han Chinese population and now barely exist as a recognised ethnic group, about half a million left.

A friend of mine who is in the military said to me that they all expect a proxy war sooner rather than later. I personally think it'll be in Africa.

:agree:The al shabab loonies have been very active in Somalia, Kenya, all round there. The French army are in the Sahara in quite big numbers but largely unreported on here.

BBC newsnight reported on Kazakhstan tonight. The journalist described China as being ‘sparsely populated’ :faf:

I find it interesting that the American and Russian talks about a potential crisis in a European country and possibly Europe itself are being discussed without Europe being at the table.

In terms of population density China is not actually that high. It's certainly lower than the UK for instance using that metric.

To be fair, they were living in a middle ages hell before the "liberation".
