Interesting stuff from Jimmy Nichol in the recent podcast. From his various utterings over the piece (his nonsense at Partick, wanting the Scotland job to name but two) after listening to him I've always been left with the impression that Gary was a bit of a cock. If he's not learnt any lessons I can't see him successfully carrying our dressing room. Hopefully I've got the wrong end of the stick, anyone with anecdotal evidence to the contrary ?

Will give it a listen but can't say I've ever taken to the guy. Always came across as an arrogant prick so not surprised that's what many have said about him over the years. That's said perhaps that what we need. A certain level of arrogance may not be a bad thing. Just got to make sure it doesn't disillusion the players and instead instills some belief.

Will give it a listen when I get the chance.

I’ve listened to the ones with Tony Pulis and Ian Holloway - and must admit, I’ve loved them both.

You've got to listen to Dick Campbell. He is bloody hilarious.

He took my mum on a date before she met my dad.

If that’s not the most terrifying “sliding doors” thought anyone could have then I don’t know what is.

I’ve listened to him quite a bit over the past few years and always thought he smacks of self importance and arrogance. He and Pressley are like two peas in a pod. Two dullards who like to talk the talk but whose post-playing achievements amount to little.

People very lazily assume that just because he lifted up his top and showed the Partick Thistle players his six pack that he is arrogant. This couldn't be further from the truth.

I remember GC putting forward his case for the Scotland job on Sportsound.......it was verging on the delusional, and painful to listen to.

Just posted this on the Maloney thread as I never saw this.

https://youtu.be/HQkDRcNTK68 - Open goals interview with Caldwell discussing his career and the last 15 minutes touches on his management.

Where does all the arrogant comments come from?

I’m a wee bit lost. Does Jimmy Nicholl talk about GC in the podcast? Did they work together at some point?

You just have to look at his promotion record to see that he’s very talented at getting himself up.

No, sorry if my post confused things. Jimmy Nicol does not mention soon to be "our Gary" but what he describes as being key qualities an Assistant Manager needs to have don't seem in sync with Gary's inflated opinion of himself. My sense is that Gary won't have to worry about loosing the dressing room as he may never gain it in the first place. A bit of a worry.

It's like having your own personal after dinner speaker for an hour, the anecdotes are hilarious..:greengrin

Always very complimentary about Hibs too.

I’d forgotten all about Caldwell seriously saying he should get the Scotland job. What a laugh.

Quite a few on here getting their knickers in a twist over Caldwell coming in with one of the main reasons being the big bad man had the audacity to cup his ears to the old east terrace, where all the shrinking violets used to sit and give out complimentary comments to visiting fans right enough!

Looks like he is coming in as someone Maloney trusts and has a strong connection with, happens all the time with new appointments. Maloney comes across as a strong minded personality and will have conviction in his own decisions, GC will be a sounding board but final say will be Maloney.

I agree he comes across as a bit of a bore and perhaps someone who thinks he is smarter than he actually is but he does have a lot of experience to call on. Miles more prepared for the job the John Potter for example, Ive sat close enough to the dugouts to hear his wisdom during matches and it was truly Sunday league stiff he would come out with!

Mind you, the SFA did employ a clearly incapable Alex McLeish so I'd say all bets were off.

I would say that is him down to a T. I have never listened to a funnier podcast for ages.

The one with David Robertson is very good as well.

I like the series - Craig Levein is very comfortable in that role and comes over as very knowledgeable and as someone you'd love to talk to.

Gary Caldwell's interview in the Hibs v Livingston programme this season, talking about that 7-0 game.

Gary Caldwell skippered the team that night and kindly took time out from his new role as U23 coach at Newcastle United to recall that match and his time at the club.
He told us: “We were a great team under Tony Mowbray. He was a brilliant coach and has gone on to have a great managerial career, but this was his first job and he had us playing a fantastic brand of attacking football. He was lucky to have inherited such a talented group of young players who mostly went on to fulfil their potential and have great careers in Scotland, England and abroad.
“Ian Murray, Derek Riordan, Gary O’Connor, Scott Brown, Kevin Thomson and Steven Whittaker all came through the Academy, I was already there having been signed by Frank Sauzee and Donald Park, and Tony brought in other youngsters like David Murphy, Guillame Beuzelin, Chris Hogg, Ivan Sproule, Sam Morrow and Dean Shiels.
“On our day, such as the Livingston game we could be devastating but sometimes we could be naďve due to our inexperience and we needed guidance and that’s why the older players such as Gary Smith, Simon Brown and Stephen Glass were so important to our development. They were all brilliant role models for the young players and their experience really helped us.
“I really enjoyed my time at Hibs where I played over 100 games and had some great times. The only disappointment was not winning a trophy with the club as we were certainly good enough, but the team was broken up within the space of a couple of years.
“Ian Murray was the first to go when he signed for Rangers. I took over a captain when he left which was a great honour for me personally. I think Tony liked my leadership skills and versatility as I could play in midfield, full-back or my preferred position at centre half.
“Garry O’Connor then went to Russia in February and I joined Celtic the following summer where I was joined by Derek Riordan. Then in the January Kevin Thomson joined Rangers but by that time Tony had also left to go to West Brom.
“Hibs still had enough good players to win the League Cup under John Collins but in the summer Scott Brown came to Parkhead, Steven Whittaker went to Ibrox and Ivan Sproule went to Bristol City.”

I don't know Caldwell. So I can't personally judge him. However, I do have a couple of Partick supporting pals (I know, I know, it relates to where I have worked and lived) who obsessively hate him for the mess he made there. No doubt similar people could be found from where else he has worked. So in that sense, him being appointed at our club doesn't seem great. However, it is in a different, lower-level, role. So again, we don't know what he will be like, we don't have knowledge of him in such a role, so we need to reserve judgement.

Hoping he's not still a c0ck tho...!!
