View Full Version : The Semi Final win
The 90+2

Anyone else feel that although how big a win it was for Jack Ross, the team and the club it's hastened his ultimate sacking today? It shows on the day how our team can play from back to front and perhaps the board have watched that and concluded that Jack couldn't inspire the squad to anywhere near that consistently when in honesty he should be able to and they've pulled the trigger for someone they believe can?
I actually think if we lost the Semi he would still be in the job today focusing on January. That game showed the players we have, have got it as a team on the day and then it was back to uninspired rank the last three games.
Thoughts?

I think if he lost the semi final he’d have been out the door after Ross County

Ironically my favourite Hibs day since 21/5/16. Ultimately just prolonged the inevitable for Ross.

Players may be trying to avoid injury because a cup final is so close so winning that game could easily have hastened his departure.

The semi final was brilliant and he set up perfectly.
The problem was he thought that would then work against anyone and it clearly wasn’t. Have my doubts that he would even have changed it last night had Cadden been available.
Don’t know if it was stubbornness or an inability to change things but it wasn’t good whatever it was.

No, we got absolutely hammered in that 2nd half and it was only a fantastic defensive display that we've never repeated before or since under JR, and frankly could scarcely have expected, that got us through.
Watch it again. It wasn't a dominant performance like in 2016, it was a herculean defensive effort combined with every shot we had resulting in a goal. Things like that combine very rarely. Outside of that it was a typical JR display that would normally have resulted in yet another predictable loss.

Defending is part of the team performance though. We didn't get hammered, they scored zero.
That showed the potential is there for the defence. Then it's been shambolic ever since.

Too loyal to certain players cost him his job.

Couldn’t give a monkeys about any of that. Great day out and pumped the Huns at Hampden. Can’t beat it.

Agreed, but it was a bit of a fluke result that made us look a better team than our league form merited, and there was some poor finishing from Der Hun in there too to help out. So in the context of the original question, I reckon it delayed rather than hastened his departure.

Nonsense blew them away first half and very very comfortably limited them to one or two chances. Best performance of his tenure and very easy against the champions.

We played well I agree but 3-0 flattered us... dont remember any other opportunities

For me, Hibs have been best as a counter attacking team under Jack. Our away form secured us 3rd place last season with the defence performing well in most games and chances being taken when we attacked. We reproduced that form in the first half against Rangers it paid off handsomely. The downside is that at home (last season and this season so far) and in away games when the home team grab a lead and sit back we are slow and laborious much of the time. I like Newell and Doyle Hayes but playing them together week in, week out has aggravated this.
The above would not though in my view justified the sacking of Jack; he cannot be classified as a "failure" compared to many of his predecessors. But when you add in the impact of losing Doidge and Magennis, the failure to sign a central striker in the last window, Kevin Nisbet's regular failure to bury chances, and some shocking defending, especially last night, a deadly cocktail has been mixed which led to his demise.

3 clear cut chances, we scored all 3. How is that flattering?
Don't remember us creating anything else in the Ivan, 3-0 SC, or 3-0 Calderwood wins.
It was a wonderful day and wonderful win. Ross deserves a lot of credit for it, so do the players.

I really don't care if it 'papered over the cracks' or if we were 'fortunate' or whatever else.
It was a fantastic day out supporting Hibs. The Hibs end was rocking, Rangers fans were raging and we reached another major final. One for my top 10 list.
There are plenty arguments for sacking Ross that stand up to scrutiny. We don't need to trash the good things he did as well.

Brilliant performance that day. Question over why the players pull that out and then pack it away again.

100% this.
It was one of the best days we’ve had at Hampden, that shouldn’t be taken away from Ross

It was 3-1 though. They scored with one of their few opportunities. We quite often create more opportunities in games we lose, it has actually cost our manager his job. We actually created a great chance with 9 men last night. We pumped the Huns and never really looked like we were going to lose. Blew then away and then contained them.
