I am sure Boyle and Doidge will be looking forward to this.

It matters because there is an inherent bias in where top level officials come from. I can't remember the exact figure but it was widely publicised not so long ago that in the last 50 years all but (I think) 2 Scottish Cup finals had been officiated by referees from the Glasgow or Lanarkshire associations.

The number of grade 1 refs from the west is hugely disproportionate. I know a couple of guys who were decent refs who officiated at a good level and they say it's an open secret that who you know and where you come from are strong considerations when it comes to progression. Andrew Dallas is the best example, he was known as a terrible ref throughout the levels but he was never going to fail to make it to the top level.

If Beaton gets a new job and is based in Wick in future, how does that change how he officiates matches?

The implication is that if you're from the west, you're biased towards the OF.

If he moves house, is he off the hook from that allegation?
